  • Christopher Dean
Christopher Dean Christopher Colin Dean was born in July 1958 in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, about ten miles from the city of Nottingham. His father, Colin, was a coal miner all his life. Chris first stepped on to the ice at the age of 10 after receiving a pair of skates for Christmas. He was instantly hooked; mesmerised by the grace and athleticism of the figure skaters that he watched. He took lessons outside school hours, working with Ken Babbington, Len Saywood and Pat Beat at the old Nottingham Ice Stadium. At 14 he began competing with ice partner Sandra Elson and despite enjoying significant success for a couple of years (British Junior Dance champions in 1974), Chris and Sandra went their separate ways. Shortly afterwards, he began skating with another local girl, Jayne Torvill. Meanwhile, Chris was training to be a policeman, joining the Nottingham Police Force straight from school in 1974. Chris and Jayne had been paired up by coach Janet Sawbridge at the Nottingham Ice Stadium. They enjoyed success in several national and international competitions, winning in Oberstdorf and coming third in the British Championships in 1977. In 1979, they switched coaches to Betty Callaway. The progress they had made as a dancing pair was confirmed by a fifth place finish in the Winter Olympics of 1980 at Lake Placid, USA. They were placed fourth in the World Championships and won their first British Champions in late 1980, a feat that they achieved for six successive years. Chris resigned from the police force in 1980, enabling him to concentrate on skating full time.

  • Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: the Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin
Andrée Grau: Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Andrée Grau Roehampton University, [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I address a number of topics relevant to anthropology generally and to the anthropology of dance specifically. I consider issues of classification and taxonomies; of interculturalism and transnationalism; of representation, exoticisation and internalised racism. I examine dance, hierarchies and discrimination, and discuss boundaries between dance and non-dance. For example, dance scholars, with a few exceptions, rarely write about figure skating, although it is cognate to Western theatre dance genres, especially ballet. Figure skating is sport, even in its ice dancing incarnation, whilst dance is art even in its ballet competition incarnations. I use as a case study the Russian skaters Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, who choreographed an ‘Australian Aboriginal Dance’ for their original routine for the 2010 European skating championships and Olympics. This offended Aboriginal elders who made a complaint to the Russian ambassador. I examine the controversy around the routine, how it was reported in the press and how the audience responded in Internet forums, focusing especially on the way Australian Aborigines con- tinue to be portrayed as stone age in popular media. KEY WORDS: aesthetics, Australian Aborigines, ballet, Internet forums, dance, ice ska- ting, taxonomies Introduction One of the premises of the anthropology of dance, is that the term ‘dance’ is problematic as it carries preconceptions of what this activity engages with, which is rooted into a Western way of understanding the body in space and time, situating it in a particular relationship to a soundscape.

To begin a history of women’s sports at such a late date has several important distorting effects. Most simply, it ignores both the much longer history of women’s participation in many kinds of sports and the fact that the history of organized men’s sports as presently conventionally understood itself does not date back appreciably farther than the last century and a half. If we look back beyond that point for men’s sports, we should not fail to take note of the sporting women we also find in those earlier times. Were we to do this, we would see that the history of women’s sports is more complicated than a progress narrative. Rather than seeing women being gradually admitted into more and more sports over time, we would have to acknowledge that a variety of sports— from wrestling and boxing to polo and baseball—were played by women and were seen as suitable for women over long history. Women’s recent readmission to competition in some of these sports follows an intervening period of exclusion.

  • ISU Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients Revealed
ISU Lifetime Achievement Award recipients revealed Living legends Jayne Torvill/Christopher Dean (GBR), Tamara Moskvina (RUS) and Alexei Mishin (RUS) received the ISU Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented by Olympic Ice Dance Champion Charlie White and Olympic Ice Dance silver medalist Tanith White, the digital show on Saturday, July 10, united Figure Skating of the present, past and future. British Ice Dancers Torvill and Dean revolutionized the sport with their immortal “Bolero” that won them Olympic gold in 1984. But there is so much more to them than the “Bolero”. Torvill and Dean brought Ice Dance to another level. Their passionate Rhumba Original Set Pattern Dance from 1994 has been developed into a Compulsory Dance, for example. They continued to create unique programs in shows and tours and as choreographers. “From our point of view it has been a life giving exercise. We didn’t know that we would still be involved/a part of [Figure Skating], this far into our lives and that was over 30 years ago, and we’re still doing it, maybe we shouldn’t be doing it but we are doing it and still enjoying it as well.” Tamara Moskvina and Alexei Mishin were successful Pair Skaters end of the 1960s, winning medals at the ISU World and European Championships. While they were technically ahead of their time as skaters, they created their true legend as coaches. They have been coaching for more than 50 years and educated generations of Figure Skaters. Moskvina’s Pairs have won a total of 63 medals at Olympic Games, ISU World and European Championships, which makes her the most successful Pair Skating coach in the World.

Affective Citizenship: Gender and Narratives of Affiliation in Multi-Ethnic British Literature by Benjamin Suzuki Graves A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Associate Professor Nadia Ellis, Chair Professor Ian Duncan Professor James Vernon Summer 2017 Affective Citizenship: Gender and Narratives of Affiliation in Multi-Ethnic British Literature Copyright 2017 by Benjamin Suzuki Graves 1 Abstract Affective Citizenship: Gender and Narratives of Affiliation in Multi-Ethnic British Literature by Benjamin Suzuki Graves Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Associate Professor Nadia Ellis, Chair This dissertation explores the vexed or thwarted longing for community shaping multi-ethnic British fiction from the 1970s onwards. I examine the work of five authors—Buchi Emecheta, Zadie Smith, Monica Ali, Alan Hollinghurst, and Jackie Kay—whose writings foreground the affective dimensions of British citizenship and the complex processes of affiliation and disaffiliation by which black, Asian, and queer Britons claim belonging in the imagined community of the nation. At a time when postcolonial literary studies increasingly privileges, without really interrogating, an idealized rhetoric of “conviviality,” the negative, anti-relational, and disaggregating emotions circulating in their works bring into uncomfortable focus the factors that undermine the forging of politicized identities and communities in black Britain. Their writings also converge in a discursive concern with what I call, after Edward Said, “affiliation,” a process in which citizenship claims are facilitated by prosthetic or proxy figures hailing from often remote cultural quarters, ranging from the English ice dancers Torvill and Dean to the American blues singer Bessie Smith.

  • A Window of Opportunity? Preliminary Thoughts on Women’S Sport in Post- War Britain
A Window of Opportunity? Preliminary Thoughts on Women’s Sport in Post- war Britain Joyce Kay University of Stirling On 6 May 1954, in a specially staged and filmed event, Roger Bannister became the first athlete to run a mile in less than four minutes, with the help of ‘pacemakers’. Three weeks later, in a genuine race at the Midland Women’s AAA championships, Diane Leather became the first woman to run the same distance in under five minutes, without pacemaking assistance and without any of the subsequent kudos, hyperbole and world-wide acclaim. Bannister, now Sir Roger, became a sporting legend and the subject of a 150-page special issue of Sport in History in which every conceivable aspect of his feat – its cultural and historical significance, the notion of the record, and issues of image, scientific training and the use of drugs – was dissected and discussed by eight men…and one woman. [1] Who recalls Leather? When current Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington and her team mate Joanne Jackson both swam inside the world record time during the same race in March 2009, they were the first British women to achieve this double since 1956. Adlington had become an instant heroine of sport after her double gold medal triumph in 2008, was voted into third place behind triple Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy in that year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year contest and was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list. [2] Yet the record breakers of 1956, Olympic gold and bronze medallists Judy Grinham and Margaret Edwards, are scarcely remembered today in spite of subsequent impressive careers and press acclaim at the time: The Times, for example, had hailed ‘Miss Grinham’s Back-stroke Triumph’ when she won gold in Melbourne.
