Brian Jordan Brian Jordan is only one of three athletes to ever play in the NFL and MLB. Brian was an All-Star player with the Atlanta Braves and All-Pro selection with the Atlanta Falcons. In baseball, Brian played for the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers over a 15 season career. In four separate seasons he hit more than 20 homeruns and twice he topped 100 RBI. He played in the 1999 World Series. In three seasons in the NFL, Brian was the starting strong safety for the Falcons recording 4 sacks, 5 interceptions, 4 fumble recoveries and 2 safeties. The Brian Jordan Foundation was founded in 1998, which helps children strive to reach their full potential. The organization provides useful information, resources, and tools to help and support youth and their families through a three-core program model including literacy, health & fitness and scholarships. Brian has been an Emmy award-winning sports analyst for FOX Sports South, recurring broadcast personality for Comcast Sports South and ESPN and lead analyst for both the Atlanta Braves and Gwinnett Braves. Brian then began displaying his considerable talent as a writer. His best-selling children’s book entitled, "I Told You I Can Play," is a brilliant chronicle of how he followed his heart to show young people that they can do anything, if they put their minds to it. In 2010, Jordan also released his second children’s book entitled "Overcoming the Fear of the Baseball." This book details a childhood experience when Jordan was hit in the face with a fastball. Instead of calling it quits, he was forced to face his fear and returned to the baseball field where he went on to play 15 years of Major League Baseball. Brian is just now preparing to release his latest book “Time Out for Bullies”, a suitable book dealing what a topic which is plaguing our schoolyards today. Jordan was raised by Christian parents and accepted the Lord at a young age. His faith has sustained through his duel sports careers. He enjoys sharing his faith with children. UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.

The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.
