CHOREOGRAPHERS

PEGGY BAKER has been a vivid presence in contemporary dance for more than four decades. She established Peggy Baker Dance Projects in 1990, and for the first 20 years she dedicated herself to solo performance, winning rapturous praise for the eloquence and depth of her dancing, and accolades for her collaborative partnerships with extraordinary musicians and designers. Since 2010 her choreography has focused on works for small ensemble.

SUSIE BURPEE choreographs for contemporary dance and theatre, and her work has received Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Choreography and Performance. She was a company dancer for Dancemakers, Le Groupe Dance Lab, and Ruth Cansfield Dance, and is a past recipient of the K.M. Hunter Artist Award for Dance. Originally from Manitoba, Burpee is a graduate of the Professional Program of Contemporary Dancers/University of . She teaches contemporary technique and rehearsal directs devised work. PETER CHIN is a Jamaican-born, -based choreographer/dancer, composer/musician, designer, and artistic director of the interdisciplinary company Tribal Crackling Wind. His works have been presented across Canada, as well as in Cambodia, Colombia, Holland, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, the U.K., and the U.S. Numerous awards include four Dora Mavor Moore Awards in dance, the Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement in Dance, and a Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Performing Arts Program. www.tribalcracklingwind.ca

CHRISTOPHER HOUSE is one of Canada’s most respected dance artists. Artistic Director of Toronto Dance Theatre since 1994, he has contributed over fifty works to the company’s repertoire. He is active as a choreographer, performer, teacher, and mentor, and is an Associate Dance Artist of Canada’s National Arts Centre. He has received many awards for his work including three Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement in Dance, an honorary doctorate from Memorial University, and the Silver Ticket Award for Lifetime Achievement.

JAMES KUDELKA is among todays’ most versatile and innovative dance artists. He has choreographed for many of the world’s leading ballet companies as well as for smaller, contemporary troupes. He is renowned for distinctive versions of such classics as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Cinderella, all signature works of the National Ballet of Canada. Equally, he excels in making smaller-scaled dances that while outwardly abstract are rich in psychological implication and human drama.

He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005. GRADUATING CLASS 2015-16 Marie-Pier Beauregard (Saint-Hyacinthe), attended the dance program at l’École de Danse de Québec (2009); performed in The Nutcracker with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (2011); performed with Cie Danse en Équilibre (2012). She is currently studying and involved at the School of TDT as costume design assistant and stage manager.

Sonja Boretski was born in Belleville, . Her initial training began at the Quinte Ballet School of Canada. Upon graduation, she chose to further her dance career at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. She has attended the ProArteDanza Summer Intensive Program and the Kenny Pearl Emerging Artist Intensive.

Rachel Borshell started dancing at three. She trained at various studios in many styles. During high school she starred in musicals, danced and choreographed in dance shows, and was artistic director of her final show. Currently in her final year at the School of TDT, Borshell is curious about change and movement.

Anna Defent, from Centreville, Ontario, began her training at Judith Coleman Oxford School of Dance at age three. She furthered her training at the School of Alberta Ballet, graduating in 2013. She then decided to continue with her dance training and was accepted into The School of Toronto Dance Theatre.

Jade Clancy attended Canada’s National Ballet School, and graduated from Etobicoke School of the Arts, where she worked with Gabby Kamino. Currently at the School of TDT, she has worked with many choreographers including Kate Alton, Robert Desrosiers, Sasha Ivanochko, Sharon B. Moore, Julia Sasso, Ofilio Sinbadinho, and Darryl Tracy. Born in Toronto, Raya Facey trained at Interplay School of Dance. In 2012, she graduated from Earl Haig Secondary School as a Dance Major. She was accepted into the School of TDT and began her first year in 2013. In future, Facey plans to finish her B.F.A. at York University.

Vicky Gélineau (L’Acadie, Quebec), trained at L’école de danse Maureen MacDonald before attending the summer intensive of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre in 2013. She enrolled in the Professional Training Program that year. Since then, she has twice attended RUBBERBANDance Group’s summer intensive, and participated in Montreal’s TransFormation Danse.

Sebastian ‘Bash’ Hirtenstein, from Aurora, Ontario, began dancing at the late age of twelve, immersing himself in Toronto’s hip hop and street dance culture. He began his professional training with the O.I.P. Dance Company, before entering the School of TDT. He has performed with numerous local and international recording artists.

Hilary Knee (Corner Brook, NL) moved to Halifax to pursue further dance training where she studied with Leica Hardy. She is currently in her third year of studies at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s PTP, learning from dance artists such as Sasha Ivanochko, Patricia Miner, and Darryl Tracy.

Sasha Ludavicius, from Sault Ste. Marie, studied ballet internationally but discovered her passion for contemporary dance when training in Montreal. Currently, she is in her final year at the School of TDT. She is a member of The Chimera Project’s Company B, and was ProArteDanza’s apprentice for their 2015 fall season. Born in Ottawa, Adrian Maxwell-Campagna began training in karate at the age of nine. He has attended summer intensives at the Joffrey Ballet School NYC, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and ProArteDanza. He has performed in Toronto with Kalos Collectives, Nostos Collectives, and Toronto Heritage Dance.

Mikaela Orford was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, and began to dance at age four. Since then, she has been trained in jazz, tap, ballet, pointe, musical theatre, stage, lyrical, modern, contemporary, and hip hop. Passion has guided her through the dance communities of Vancouver, San Francisco, and Toronto.

Jake Ramos started his training with the Norzagaray Dance Troupe, and was introduced to Philippine Cultural Dance. He entered the School of TDT to further his training in contemporary dance. He performed in Robert Desrosiers’ Full Moon and Peter Randazzo’s A Simple Melody in the Toronto Heritage Dance 2015 season.

Edmonton native Katherine Semchuk discovered her passion for movement at age five. She attended Victoria School of the Arts, and then commenced her training at the School with a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She is currently working with Nostos Collectives and ECHO Dance Company in Toronto.

Margarita Soria found her love for dance in the Canterbury High School arts program in Ottawa. From there she trained at the National Circus School in Montreal. She currently studies at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. She recently performed in Brandy Leary’s Glaciology, for Anandam Dancetheatre, and Gadfly’s UNBXBL. Emily Spearing is student council president, and highly involved in activities at the School. She performed with Gadfly in UNBXBL, and is part of Nostos Collectives. She has performed with Sharing Spaces, Short Dances Small Spaces, and Fever After Dark. She is a passionate and energetic dancer, choreographer, and teacher.

Noelle Young (Chilliwack, BC) started dancing at age eight. A highlight of her training was travelling to Frankfurt, Germany, on Team Canada for the World Dance Championships in 2012, working with Josh Beamish. Today she’s in third year at the School of TDT, and is a member of Nostos Collectives.

SPECIAL APPEARANCES Philip McDermott is a second year student at the School. Recent credits include The Thirst for Love & Water, Sharon B. Moore, in PANAMANIA, the Arts and Culture Program of the PanAm/Parapan Am Games, 2015. At the School, he has performed works by Moore, Julia Sasso, and Darryl Tracy.

Roberto Soria is a first year student at the School. Recent credits include Notru Nordh by Apolonia Velasquez, as part of TOES FOR DANCE IGNITE. At the School, Soria has performed in Ripple, by Julia Sasso, and his class is currently working with Darryl Tracy and Sharon B. Moore and Darryl Tracy.
