——; — ! 92 STEVENSONIANA VIII ISLAND DAYS TO TUSITALA IN VAILIMA^ Clearest voice in Britain's chorus, Tusitala Years ago, years four-and-twenty. Grey the cloudland drifted o'er us, When these ears first heard you talking, When these eyes first saw you smiling. Years of famine, years of plenty, Years of beckoning and beguiling. Years of yielding, shifting, baulking, ' When the good ship Clansman ' bore us Round the spits of Tobermory, Glens of Voulin like a vision. Crags of Knoidart, huge and hoary, We had laughed in light derision. Had they told us, told the daring Tusitala, What the years' pale hands were bearing, Years in stately dim division. II Now the skies are pure above you, Tusitala; Feather'd trees bow down to love you 1 This poem, addressed to Robert Louis Stevenson, reached him at Vailima three days before his death. It was the last piece of verse read by Stevenson, and it is the subject of the last letter he wrote on the last day of his life. The poem was read by Mr. Lloyd Osbourne at the funeral. It is here printed, by kind permission of the author, from Mr. Edmund Gosse's ' In Russet and Silver,' 1894, of which it was the dedication. After the Photo by] [./. The story, set in fifteenth-century Paris, concerns a dissolute evening’s drinking which ends with a murder; the poet (and rogue) Francis Villon flees the scene, finding shelter in the home of the Lord of Brisetout, who takes it upon himself to lecture Villon on his moral failings.

Colin Manlove "Closer than an Eye": The Interconnection of Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde One could say of many works that the more one looked at them the more complex they became, but the remark would have peculiar relevance with R.L. Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The basic movement of the narrative is itself towards increasing complexity. At first it seems that Hyde has the pull of a blackmailer on Jekyll, in order to explain his ability to draw a cheque against Jekyll's name to buy off the family of a girl he injures; yet as the narrative proceeds we are to find that the relation of the two is much closer and more problematic than could ever have been imagined. Here we can start with another aspect of the narrative: the way seemingly unrelated or separate people and incidents are brought together.

Its characteristics changed accordingly, most often to reflect the state of the society, and mainly its concerns and anxieties. Gloomy settings, supernatural phenomena, concepts of sublimity, uncanniness, abhumaness, the doppelgänger theme, the combination of terror and horror; these are just some of the genre‟s characteristics which add to its potential to act as a metaphorical mirror of society‟s struggles. Robert Louis Stevenson professes himself as a writer during the second half of the nineteenth century. His works encompass a variety of literary forms such as poetry, prose and essays, and his profuseness can also be observed in the style and the themes he uses.

  • Short Stories, a Series of Letters on the South Seas, and the Novel David Balfour
SHORT-STORIES BY EDGAR ALLAN POE INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF THE SHORT-STORY Just when, where, and by whom story-telling was begun no one can say. From the first use of speech, no doubt, our ancestors have told stories of war, love, mysteries, and the miraculous performances of lower animals and inanimate objects. The ultimate source of all stories lies in a thorough democracy, unhampered by the restrictions of a higher civilization. Many tales spring from a loathsome filth that is extremely obnoxious to our present day tastes. The remarkable and gratifying truth is, however, that the short-story, beginning in the crude and brutal stages of man's development, has gradually unfolded to greater and more useful possibilities, until in our own time it is a most flexible and moral literary form. The first historical evidence in the development of the story shows no conception of a short-story other than that it is not so long as other narratives. This judgment of the short-story obtained until the beginning of the nineteenth century, when a new version of its meaning was given, and an enlarged vision of its possibilities was experienced by a number of writers almost simultaneously. In the early centuries of story-telling there was only one purpose in mind—that of narrating for the joy of the telling and hearing. The story-tellers sacrificed unity and totality of effect as well as originality for an entertaining method of reciting their incidents. The story of Ruth and the Prodigal Son are excellent short tales, but they do not fulfill the requirements of our modern short-story for the reason that they are not constructed for one single impression, but are in reality parts of possible longer stories.

  • A Positive Reading of Robert Louis Stevenson's
‘Man is not truly one, but truly two’: A Positive Reading of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Double By Kate Eleanor Garland September 2017 Dissertation submitted as partial requirement for the degree of MRes in Religious Studies at The University of Nottingham. - 1 - Contents Abstract 2 Introduction - Stevenson, Religion and the Double 3 Chapter One – Markheim: an Effectual Calling 11 Chapter Two – The Double: a Strange Case 34 Chapter Three – The Master of Ballantrae: the Double and the Diabolus 55 Conclusion 87 Appendix 89 Bibliography 90 - 2 - Abstract This thesis will explore the literary double – doppelgänger or other – in the works of Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 – 1894). Through a consideration of the literary double found within three key texts, the short story ‘Markheim’, the novella a Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and the novel The Master of Ballantrae: A Winter’s Tale, I shall undertake a reading which accounts for the influence Calvinism and Scottish Presbyterianism had upon Stevenson’s double. I shall demonstrate this by focusing on the relationship between the first and second self – the two selves which together constitute the double - evidencing my theory with Stevenson’s writings, in addition to those by John Calvin, and Scottish Presbyterian thought. Ultimately, I will suggest when viewed through a theological lens, Stevenson’s literary double can accommodate a positive reading of duality. Specifically, in Chapter One I will consider ‘Markheim’, suggesting it is Stevenson’s most positive treatment of the double, which results in a redemptive Effectual Calling. In Chapter Two I will venture that whilst the double collapses within the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, this need not necessarily be the nihilistic ending for Jekyll that is appears.
