The complexities within varying paradigms, that seek to determine the significance of ideologies and the hegemony that is often associated with the same, convey truly that the old must seek to coexist, in more ways than one with the new. The contentions, keenly raised within the pages of the journal seek to establish too, that a dual notion of cultural hybridity that is so often particular to almost every community has sought too, to establish a voice. Voices that may be deemed ‘minority’ undoubtedly, yet expressed in tones that are decidedly

  • Of Grandeur and Valour: Bollywood and Indiaís Fighting Personnel 1960-2005
OF GRANDEUR AND VALOUR: BOLLYWOOD AND INDIAíS FIGHTING PERSONNEL 1960-2005 Sunetra Mitra INTRODUCTION Cinema, in Asia and India, can be broadly classified into three categoriesópopular, artistic and experimental. The popular films are commercial by nature, designed to appeal to the vast mass of people and to secure maximum profit. The artistic filmmaker while not abandoning commercial imperatives seeks to explore through willed art facets of indigenous experiences and thought worlds that are amenable to aesthetic treatment. These films are usually designated as high art and get shown at international film festivals. The experimental film directors much smaller in number and much less visible on the film scene are deeply committed to the construction of counter cinema marked by innovativeness in outlook and opposition to the establishment (Dissanayke, 1994: xv-xvi). While keeping these broad generalizations of the main trends in film- making in mind, the paper engages in a discussion of a particular type of popular/ commercial films made in Bollywood1. This again calls for certain qualifications, which better explain the purpose of the paper. The paper attempts to understand Bollywoodís portrayal of the Indian military personnel through a review of films, not necessarily war films but, rather, through a discussion of themes that have war as subject and ones that only mention the military personnel. The films the paper seeks to discuss include Haqeeqat, Border, LOC-Kargil, and Lakshya that has a direct reference to the few wars that India fought in the post-Independence era and also three Bollywood blockbusters namely Aradhana, Veer-Zara and Main Hoon Na, the films that cannot be dubbed as militaristic nor has reference to any war time scenario but nevertheless have substantial reference to the army.

  • Portrayal of Peace and Harmony: an Analysis of Indo - Pak Relation Through Indian TV Ads Dr
International Journal of Innovative Studies in Sociology and Humanities (IJISSH) ISSN 2456-4931 (Online) www.ijissh.org Volume: 4 Issue: 6 | June 2019 Portrayal of Peace and Harmony: An Analysis of Indo - Pak Relation through Indian TV Ads Dr. Juhi P. Pathak Asst. Professor, GD Goenka University, Gurgaon, Haryana, India Former Junior Research Fellow (UGC) Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University, Assam, India Abstract:India is an emerging world power with a growing economy but it continues to be burdened with its estranged relationship with the immediate neighbour – Pakistan. India’s international position is also heavily influenced by its poor relation with the same. The two-nation theory and the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 led to communalism and forced exchange of people ; which in turn led to the human rights violations of the worst kind. Over the decades both the countries have only drifted apart with the intermittent wars and conflicts ; but still some believe that the animosity is limited to the political zone and that the citizens of both the countries are actually desiring peace. And most of the global companies have responded to this desire of friendship and peace of the citizens of both the countries by sending strong social messages through their television advertising campaigns. This paper seeks to understand the role of such television advertisements in analysing the India-Pakistan relations from an Indian perspective. Keywords: Advertisements, religious harmony, Hindu-Muslim unity, India-Pakistan relation, India-Pakistan unity, communal harmony. Objectives 1. To give a detailed account of the Indo-Pak relationship.

  • Naxalism: an Analytical Overview Vikash Kumar, University Department of Psychology, Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag, Jharkhand
The Researchers’ - Volume III, Issue I, June-2017 ISSN : 2455-1503 International Journal of Research Naxalism: An analytical Overview Vikash Kumar, University Department of Psychology, Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag, Jharkhand. Introduction The Naxalites, also sometimes called the Naxals, is a loose term used to define groups waging a violent struggle on behalf of landless labourers and tribal people against landlords and others. The Naxalites say they are fighting oppression and exploitation to create a classless society. Their opponents say the Naxalites are terrorists oppressing people in the name of a class war. According to Ramakrishnan, Venkitesh (2005), A Naxal or Naxalite is a member of any of the Communist guerrilla groups in India, mostly associated with the Communist Party of India (Maoist). The term Naxal derives from the name of the village Naxalbari in West Bengal, where the movement had its origin. Naxalites are considered far-left radical communists, supportive of Maoist political sentiment and ideology. Their origin can be traced to the split in 1967 of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), leading to the formation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist). Initially the movement had its centre in West Bengal. In later years, it spread into less developed areas of rural southern and eastern India, such as Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana through the activities of underground groups like the Communist Party of India (Maoist). Naxal Movement in India: Telangana Struggle: The revolt started in 1946 in the Nalgonda district in Andhra Pradesh which was then part of princely state of Hyderabad against the oppressive feudal lords and quickly spread to the Warangal and Bidar districts in around 4000 villages.Peasant farmers and labourers revolted against the local feudal landlords who were ruling the villages known as samsthans.

  • Critical Geopolitics and the Construction of Security in South Asia
Critical Geopolitics and the Construction of Security in South Asia by Iqbal Shailo MA in Public Policy & Public Administraion, Concordia University, Montreal Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism, Concordia University BA (Hons.), MA in English, Dhaka University, Dhaka A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © copyright 2013 Iqbal Shailo To my dad… [Marhum Ali Ahmed Talukder] Yes! I did it… Abstract The study demonstrates how the security of the south Asian region, specifically within the context of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, is an epistemological question. This is especially so in how cultural and political identities are structured, how the politics and power nexus works in the region by distinguishing ‘We’ and ‘They’, and in how hegemonic power is a concern in establishing any security concept in the region. The thesis examines contemporary discourses of identity, danger, threat, and imagined community as part of a broader discussion of critical geopolitics, specifically popular geopolitics. Discourse analysis acts as a method for studying how identities are formed and transformed in a historical context, how danger and threats are securitized and how ‘the other’ is used to construct security concepts from South Asian perspectives. Foreign policies and security narratives are not only indispensable for examining South Asian security concepts; images and other forms of representation are also important in shaping the patterns of security, identity, security integration and social order. Popular culture and visual media, such as films and cartoons, are deeply rooted in geopolitical discourse.

This thesis is about the Indian industry’s reassessment of itself and perceived authenticity of ‘Indian’ cinema as it changes to meet the prospect of gaining a Western audience.
