RAILWAYS’ DEVELOPMENT IN (2014-PRESENT)

Indian Railways is the lifeline of the Nation and a catalyst for 's progress and economic development. South Eastern Railway (SER) plays a significant role in the socio- economic development of the state of Jharkhand. 36% of SER's jurisdiction covers Jharkhand. With a view to improve railway infrastructure and extend the railway network in Jharkhand, the Railway Division was formed in the year 2003. The Government of Jharkhand always extends necessary support and co-operation to this railway towards development of Jharkhand and improvement of train services. Railways have achieved many visible milestones in Jharkhand in the last 3-4 years in different fields viz. construction of new lines, doubling, introduction of new trains, extension of service, increase in frequency of trains etc. On the freight side, loading of South Eastern Railway has reached the milestone of 150.76 Million Tonnes, where the lead role has been taken by the state. The changing face of transport sector in Jharkhand and the expectations of its people are being fulfilled with topmost priority. The past achievements of railways and ongoing projects in the state of Jharkhand are being highlighted in this booklet. It may be noted that the budgets allocated to various projects are not apportioned state wise but reflect the cost of the project. X X X

JHARKHAND - A STATE WITH RICH HERITAGE AND ABUNDANT MINERAL RESOURCES

Jharkhand, one of the newly created states of India came into existence on 15 November 2000. Rich in minerals and natural resources, Jharkhand is full of Tagore Hill industrial and tourism development possibilities. Since day one of its coming into existence, Jharkhand state is poised for a great leap forward with the development of railways. South Eastern Railway is the Hundru Falls major partner of the all-round vibrant growth of the state of Jharkhand.

DEDICATED FREIGHT CORRIDOR q The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, being constructed under the aegis of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL), with a total route length of 1856 Kms. has 196 Kms. running through the state of Jharkhand. This corridor will cater to a number of vital traffic streams originating from Jharkhand or passing through Jharkhand

u Coal for the power plants from Eastern Coal fields in region of Jharkhand

u Finished steel from Bokaro Steel Plant

u Cement from factories of ACC in Patratu, Dalmia and Lafarge groups

u Fertilizers from FCIL,

u It would also quantitatively speed up transport of lime stone from to steel plants in the east and general goods q Eastern Corridor will also benefit the people of Jharkhand, who use railways for travelling

u By absorbing about 70 per cent of the existing freight traffic

u Average speed of passenger trains on the Kumardhubi-Dhanbad- Koderma section of Jharkhand on the Delhi - Howrah corridor will thereby increase by 25 kmph. and help operate passenger trains at maximum speed upto 160 kmph. with the existing infrastructure
