Wawa, surrounded by natural beauty, is located on Wawa Lake near Lake Superior. The area appeals to people who enjoy the outdoors and want a safe environment for their children. The Health Centre is a multi-service facility located east of the north shore of Lake Superior. The catchment area has a population of just over 4,300 which includes the communities of Dubreuilville, Hawk Junction, Michipicoten First Nation, Michipicoten Township-Wawa, Missanabie, and White River. It includes ten acute care, two respite and sixteen long term care beds. We operate a 24-hour emergency department, staffed by a Registered Nurse and an on- call Physician. We also provide a Surgical Program, Diagnostic and Therapeutic services, Telehealth and a Nurse Practitioner Program. Our community service program includes North Algoma Counselling Service, North Algoma Diabetes Education Program, and outreach nursing clinics in the communities of Dubreuilville and Missanabie. Other on-site services that operate as separate entities are the Wawa Medical Centre, Wawa Family Health Team, North East LHIN Home and Community Care and the Paramedic Services of Algoma. Mission Statement To provide our communities with high quality health services Vision Statement Excellent health care for every one, every day Core Value Statement Respect. Trust. Integrity. Compassion. Inclusiveness. 4 INTRODUCTION In 2014 Lady Dunn developed a five-year conservation and demand management (CDM) plan to actively work towards decreasing our overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The plan outlined goals that our hospital wished to achieve over the past five years and listed several initiatives that we had planned on taking to achieve these goals. This plan, completed in 2019, is a reflection on our results over the past five years and a renewal of our commitment to reducing our environmental impact. Lady Dunn is proud to report that we have successfully decreased our total electricity consumption by 4% and saw a slight increase of 0.18% in propane usage; this represents a total 1 of 48,528 kgCO2e or 11% decrease in our GHG emissions . We also have a satellite clinic in Dubreuilville which provides health care services by Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners to residents and visitors of Dubreuilville. This location has seen a 6% decrease in electricity usage, equating to 3,674 kg CO2e of GHG emissions. A comparision of 2013 to 2018 values has been included below for both sites. To further strengthen and obtain full value from energy management activities, a strategic approach will be taken: the organization will continue to fully integrate energy management into its business decision-making, policies, and operating procedures. 1 All kilograms of CO2 equivalent have been calculated using the provincial GHG emission factors which are updated annually. 5 A REFLECTION ON LADY DUNN’S 2014 ENERGY MANAGEMENT VISION In 2014 Lady Dunn made a commitment to reducing its energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions and electrical/natural gas demand. Lady Dunn created an energy efficiency vision that it set out to achieve by 2018. Recognizing the role Lady Dunn has in the community, we put a focus on using our natural resources wisely, including conserving energy and reducing our impact on the environment whenever possible. We developed a vision for the hospital and the community which is included below. Energy Management Vision To eliminate energy waste wherever possible, through infrastructure improvement, policy procedure changes, and by embracing best practices and technology changes. Lady Dunn also recognizes the additional benefits that come with effective energy management including a reduction in operating costs, enabling us to place more focus on the health care needs of our community. Additionally, many energy conservation measures positively effect the environment of the hospital, whether it be through lighting conditions, staff and patient comfort, or by having a more reliable and effective system in place. Going forward, Lady Dunn will renew this energy management vision, in addition to applying the energy management principles discussed later in this report. Over the next five years, Lady Dunn will continue to place a focus on reducing our energy consumption (both electricity and propane) with the goal of reducing each by 3% by 2024, or in terms of GHG emissions, by 11,992 kg CO2e. 6 GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND GOING FORWARD Going forward, Lady Dunn will apply the following guiding principles to achieve our reduction goals and improve our consumption performance. We recognize that integrating conservation and demand measures into our everyday operation is key to being successful. A Whole Building, Integrated Systems Approach In 2014, Lady Dunn placed a focus on a comprehensive and integrated whole building approach for energy management solutions that would consider the connection between conservation opportunities. This has proved to be a successful principle to follow, one that Lady Dunn will continue going forward. Recognizing the many benefits that come with energy conservation measures, Lady Dunn will continue to integrate CDM measures into our everyday decision- making processes. This will include looking for greener and more efficient models when replacing equipment, introducing new processes to reduce consumption, and consistently looking for new opportunities to improve the hospital. Community Engagement Building off the 2014 principle of engaging facilities stakeholders, including staff and patients, in the development and active implementation, measuring and reporting process, Lady Dunn will continue to work with all hospital members to implement CDM initiatives. While large scale projects are extremely effective in decreasing utility demand, changing human behaviour and habits can be just as effective. Lady Dunn will place a new focus on educating staff, patients, and visitors on what they can do to reduce their own demand, such as turning off lights when they leave a room and unplugging/powering off equipment when not in use. This community engagement will benefit both Lady Dunn and the Wawa community. Sustainability Lady Dunn will continue to look beyond energy to consider other resources such as water and materials to further the benefits seen through costs and savings initiatives streaming from efficiency and proper management. While Lady Dunn is proud of the accomplishments we have achieved over the past five years, we will continue to place a focus on sustainability of the organization and linking initiatives to see benefits beyond just electricity and natural gas demand reduction. Lady Dunn will continue to expand the scope of financial analyses to include co- benefits and the opportunity costs of managing risk more
