December 2019 – Clay Target 17 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP National Ground, Wagga Wagga New South Wales Trap Carnival

This year the NSW State Executives tried quite a few new things. With the introduction of the very first Gala Dinner on the first day of competition, this gave everyone a chance to socialise in a formal setting. We had a great turn out with around 300 people in attendance. With entertainment from Elliot Goblet and our very own member Jason Owen with his cousin Matthew Young on guitar everyone in attendance was entertained for many hours. The food was great, the atmosphere spectacular. A new program of order in which the carnival was run was also trialled and appeared to run quite well considering the numbers we had for the weekend. We had over 330 shooters attend over the 4 day shoot which is quite impressive considering the decline in numbers over the last few years. It helped that the weather gods looked down upon us and gave us a glorious weekend of sunshine, although I’m sure the shooters in the Double Barrel OA Winner Ch/Ch James Hayden with Matt Cirson of Winchester Shoot off on Sunday afternoon would disagree, the wind had picked up quite sever at this stage (But at least it wasn’t raining). I would like to thank all of our sponsors: Winchester Australia, Perazzi, J & A Geotech Testing Pty Ltd, Clay & Hunt/Zoli Competition, Beretta Australia, Victoria Hotel, Hunts Shooting Supplies, Farmers Home Hotel, Rules Club Wagga Wagga, McDonalds, Bronzewing Ammunition/Laporte, Casella Wines & Camilleri Custom Stocks. Also thanks go out to our executives that spared their time over the weekend assisting with the smooth running of the carnival on both an administration and on the field capacity. Therese Nealon needs a huge pat on the back for her assistance with the Gala Dinner and help in the office over the entire carnival. We have no dominant problems. control over which eye the brain choses to use. The only way we can be absolutely sure is to close the eye we do not want to use but then we lose depth and speed perception. Central Vision where both eyes are equally as strong or dominant can also be an issue. There have been a number of techniques that shooters have used to alleviate this problem, or shut- ting off the cross dominant eye. These measures have involved eye covers or stick on spots, that cloud the vision of the dominant eye making the brain use the clearer non dominant eye. This also allows the shooter to still have access to their peripheral vision. Shooters have also installed hi-viz beads that have a tube in front of them that only lets you see the bead if you have the gun aligned. Another method What is the SP and how does the SP work? is a small piece of angle plate that sits on the The Shootsp website explains ‘The SP is a dis- barrel in front of the bead that stops the dominant creet innovation fitted to the barrel of your gun that eye from seeing the bead. December 2019 – Clay Target 39 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Bendigo Clay Target Club 39th Australasian Police and Services Clay Target Championships 26TH TO 29TH SEPTEMBER 2019

The first Australian Police Clay Target Championships were conducted in 1981 at Bendigo by the then newly formed Loddon District Police Trap Club. The inaugural Championships were a 1 day event with 115 shooters attending. In September this year the Championships were again hosted by the Loddon District Police Trap Club in Bendigo, the 39th staging of the Championships and unbelievably, 116 competitors took part. The championships were the concept of Glenn Woodhatch and with the help of Brian Mark of Winchester, became a reality. This year Glenn was still manning the office and just as enthusiastic as ever in the successful staging of the event. Over the years the event has grown to be the Aus- tralasian Championships with New Zealand join- ing in 1985 and now we include all Services, hence Australasian Police and Services Clay Target Cham- pionships and instead of a 1 day event, it is now a 4 day event. Competitors attended from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Aus- tralia, New Zealand as well as representatives of the Federal Police. The Championships are divided into 2 groups – Police and Services Section and Civilian Section. Day 1 of the program saw the Skeet Championship

Skeet Teams event: Kev Raymond, Ric Matthers & Danny Forster

and with 16 squads taking part, it was a full day. A pleasing feature of this event is the number of Police and Services members who normally do not shoot skeet, but opt to compete in this event each year. At the end of the day it was Dean Baird from Queens- land at the top of the Police and Services with a great 49/50 closely followed by Kev Raymond, NSW on 48/50. In the Civilian Section a score of 46/50 gave Max Oakley the sash. In the Teams event shot in conjunction it was NSW who were triumphant with a score of 137/150 – Kev Raymond, Ric Mathers and Danny Forster. So to bed – well perhaps not quite for Colin Anderson refereeing the skeet with Philippa Cary shooting some – to dream of better shooting on day 2.

Right throughout the shoot the Gemini Traps worked flawlessly and the Green Dream Targets flew true. No carnival of this size can run and be successful without sponsors. Our unqualified thanks go to Win- chester Australia, Beretta Australia, Lokaway Safes, South Australian Police Clay Target Club, Federal Police Clay Target Club, Kirkland Lake Gold, Queensland Police Clay Target Club and New South Wales Police Clay Target Club. December 2019 – Clay Target 59 State Shooting Park, SA AUSTRALIAN MASTERS GAMES The 17th Australian Masters Games took up residency in Adelaide for 2019. Clay Target shooters from all over Australia convened at our State Shooting Park complex during the 3 days of competitions over Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday the 8th, 9th & 10th of October. The days leading up to the Carnival, saw ICTC President Dino Olivero and his staff ensuring that all critical tasks at hand on the grounds were completed in readiness for the games to begin. Many thanks have to go out to these guys who, with their ‘can do’ attitude, spent so much time before, during and after, to make everyone’s visit friendly and trouble free. December 2019 – Clay Target 61 Club History & Personalities Jeparit Gun Club

Jeparit is a small town on the Wimmera River in Western Victoria, 370 kilometres north west of Melbourne. Its most notable claim is that it is the birthplace of Sir Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia from 1939-1941 and 1949-1966, but did you know that in October 1979 it hosted the Victorian State DTL Carnival. At this time the population was just over 600 but as of the 2016 census, it was down to 477. The background photo shows the club grounds as they are today, having changed very little in the ensuing years since the State Carnival.

To hold a State DTL Carnival in 1979 the club needed a minimum of 4 layouts and each year in rotation each Victorian Zone was given the opportunity to run this prestigious event. the bush yarns spun by the legendary shooter/ Jeparit is now the home club of the Hawker character and story teller Frank James. 64 Clay Target – December 2019 OCTOBER 2019 – CLUB CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS The shoot got underway in extremely windy condi- tions shortly after the Zone meeting. The 90 target Champion of Champions witnessed targets that seemed to have a mind of their own, with little flight consistency due to the wind. However some shoot- ers still managed good scores in these trying condi- tions. During the year the club conducts some events where shooters are given "targets added" according to grade. C graders in this instance were given 12 points, B grade shooters 8 points and A grade re- ceived a 4 point advantage over AA off scratch. This allows for lesser grade shooters to sometimes win the day's High Gun. At the conclusion shooter Russell Black won the A Grade and Overall with a corrected score of 147/150. AA Grade went to Wimmera legend Roger Leh- man on 145/150. B Grade was won by Kane Hawker 131/150 and C Grade went to Paul Phillips 115/150.

Second place in grades went to Wayne Harker Overall winner on the day Russell Black from Warracknabeal with AA, Mark Newcombe A, Neil Box & Ron Hounsell Wayne Hawker & Jeparit Club Sec/Treas Mark Newcombe shared B and Cass Comensoli & Bruce Papst shared C grade.

68 Clay Target – December 2019 CLUB NEWS Kempsey Clay Target Club Great couple of days at Kempsey

On 19 & 20 October 2019, Kempsey hosted its annual two-day shoot. Shooters from near and not so near attended to enjoy 205 targets over the two days with beautiful weather on the first day, a cooler and slightly windy day for day two, not good when you have a continental event. The club would not have been able to host such a great weekend without the sponsorship of local business, DGI Trading, Mavin Truck Centre, Barnett’s Bakery, Thurgood Haulage, Kempsey Stock & Land, Valley Butchery, SWR Tyrepower as well as local shooters Barry, Robert and Jenny ‘kicking the tin’. Six events were held over the weekend with a 25T PS cash prize opening the first day. Shooters sharing the rewards of the event. We then held a 25T DB Hand- icap with 1st place going to visiting shooter, Kevin PS winner Kerry Miller and wife Vicki Thompson, after a short shoot-off, followed by Rob Marko, Greg ‘Watto’ Watson, Ben Tyson and Megan started with day with a DB Continental, I did say it Wilkins with placings from 2nd to 5th. was a bit windy, lots of high rising targets. Well, another Gympie Clay Target Club Two Day Shoot is down and dusted. We had a great shoot with 72 shooters attending. The weather forecast for Saturday was not good, but turned out okay with a total 43 possibles being shoot on the day and a spectacular rainbow over the traps after a storm. Sunday turned on some beautiful weather with a lot of good scores and a further 5 possibles put on the board. I would like to thank all our sponsors for their donations and all the helpers that made the shoot run so well. I would also like to thank the Cedar Pocket School for the job they did with the catering. Looking forward to seeing you at our next monthly shoot on 10/11/2019. Thanks to everyone who came.
