12 US 20 A I S P SF U WORLD C OFFICIAl Media Guide March 23 – april 1, 2012 Tucson Trap & Skeet club 7800 W. Old ajo highway visitTucson.org 2012worldcup.tucsontrapandskeet.com (520) 883-6426 | toll free (888) 530-5335 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. USA Shooting is pleased to introduce the official 2012 Media Guide for the Tucson World Cup. Since participation in the first Olympic Games in 1896, American shooters have won over 100 medals. Though the events have changed over the years, the spirit of the Games remains. The title of the media guide is “Creating Legends on the Road to London” because American shooters have been so successful in the past and the future is equally lustrous. While there are many opportunities to shoot competitively in the United States, USA Shooting offers world-class athletes the opportunity to achieve Olympic and Paralympic dreams. “To me, the concept of wearing the USA on my back in the Paralympic Games in 2012 means that I have found my way through the fear factor. I have found a new sense of self and I have not only leveled the playing field from Special Operations soldier to Paralympic athlete . I have eclipsed all previous expectations of who I wanted to be and created a new pinnacle that exceeded all previous achievements and I did it without the use of my legs,” said 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team nominee Eric Hollen. Hollen is not only a top-notch individual, but also a very talented and hard-working shooter. Holllen was awarded USA Shooting’s 2010 and 2011 Paralympic Athlete of the Year distinction, and most notably, he was recently nominated to the 2012 U.S.

29th Olympiad, Beijing, China CMP Director Gary Anderson will be in Beijing during the nine days of Olympic shooting that begin on Saturday, 9 August and end on Sunday, 17 August. Anderson is serving as the Chairman of the Jury of Appeal for Shooting. While he is in Beijing for the Olympics, he will send back daily reports on the shooting events. These reports and accompanying photos will be posted here. If you are interested in these special reports on the Beijing Olympic shooting events, plan to check this site on a daily basis from 9 August through 17 August. Reports from Beijing Day 9, 17 August – Men’s 50-Meter Three- Position Rifle Matt Emmons is only 27 years old, but he has already endured misfortunes that rival Job’s. For the second time in two Olympic Games, Emmons has put together stellar performances in 50-meter three-position rifle events that brought him to the last shot needing just a seven to win the gold medal, only to have victory snatched away from him by an incredible stroke of bad luck. In Athens, four years ago, it was a crossfire on his last shot. This image of Matt Emmons throwing a clenched fist up in the air after the premature This time he bumped the trigger to fire a 4.4 at 12 discharge of his last shot that cost him a gold o’clock as he was settling down onto the target for medal best characterizes the tragic ending of an otherwise very successful Olympics for his final shot.

Credit: Courtesy of ISSF/Schreiber Shooting in India Peter C. Terry and Alberto Cei In Secrets of Asian Sport Psychology Edited by: P eter C. Terry, Zhang Li-Wei, Kim YoungHo, Tony Morris, and Stephanie Hanrahan Introduction Shooting sports have become increasingly popular in India with more than 2,700 athletes participating at the 2013 national championships. By comparison, most countries would attract at best only a few hundred competitors to their national championships. The performances of the Indian shooting team have improved dramatically in the past decade, to transform the country into one of the dominant forces in world shooting. India topped the medal table for shooting at the Commonwealth Games of 2006 and 2010, won an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, its first ever individual gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, and backed up these successes with silver and bronze medals at the 2012 Olympics. There can be little doubt that India has become a force to be reckoned with in the shooting world and looks set to climb to even greater heights over coming years. Credit: Courtesy of Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore Rathore wins Olympic Silver In this chapter, we explore some of the psychological factors that have contributed to the international success of Indian shooters.
