Olmsted taught physics, meteorology and astronomy at Yale from 1826 to 1859, and from this position of influence, helped mold the minds and outlook of a new generation of scientists, of hundreds of students who came to Yale to obtain a liberal educa- tion, and of those members of society who attended his popular lectures.Olmsted's personal perspective was that science was God-ordained, that it would ever harmonize with religion, that it was indeed a means of hastening the glorious millennium. Olmsted lived in an era characterized by an unprecedented revivalism and emphasis upon evangelical Christianity. He graduated from Yale (1813) at a time when its president, Reverend Dr. Timothy Dwight, one of the most influential clergymen in New England, was at the height of his fame. Olmsted subsequently studied theology under Dwight, but before completing his prepara- tion for the ministry, Olmsted was appointed to a professorship of science at the University of North Carolina where he taught from 1818 until he was called to Yale in 1826. -

(April 8, 2014) –Soon after artists and scientists catalogued the exotic wonders of Egypt (following Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign of 1798–9), Egyptian Revival style swept over Europe and the United States and remained popular throughout the 19th century. Connecticut preserves some of the most significant Egyptianizing architecture within the northeastern United States, including the striking Grove Street Cemetery gateway in New Haven, which was designed by architect Henry Austin and completed in 1847. On Thursday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m., the New Haven Museum and the Friends of Grove Street Cemetery will present a lecture, “Egypt in Connecticut: Egyptianizing Architecture from New Haven to Coventry,” by eminent archaeologist and Yale University faculty member, Colleen Manassa. During the lecture, Manassa—locally renowned for her contributions to the highly successful “Echoes of Egypt: Conjuring the Land of the Pharaohs” exhibition in 2013 at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History—will discuss the imagery and meaning of the 19th-century Grove Street Cemetery Gate design and the Egyptian Revival movement in Connecticut and New Haven. William Walter Phelps, Class of 1860, August 1870 In the decades after the Civil War, the American college was being redefined. Responding to a variety of forces, the professors took firm charge of the classroom, expanding it with such devices as the elective curriculum and new courses of study. As this happened, the students, who would soon be alumni, remained in charge of college life, if not the college proper. In consequence, there was created “among the professors the belief that the young men who passed through their classrooms became graduates of the curriculum, while among the young men themselves the belief developed that they would become graduates of their fraternities, their clubs, their teams―all the aspects of college that really mattered….The college alumnus who, as a student, had…developed an emotional investment in the preservation of institutions that one day might not be recognized by everyone as best serving an institution of learning. Thus, one consequence of the college student as a college reformer has been the college alumnus as perpetual sophomore”1―or in Yale’s case, perpetual senior. At Yale College, the graduate members of Bones and Keys were now men of prominence and substance, and believed that their university would need a broader base than had the Congregational college.
