The worms are compared to other Opechona species occurring on the Brazilian coast, but no association has been made because only adult forms of these species have been described. Suppositions as to the possible transference of the parasites are made. A compilation of 107 references dealing with fish parasites in New Caledonia permitted the production of a parasite-host list and a host-parasite list. The lists include Turbellaria, Monopisthocotylea, Polyopisthocotylea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Copepoda, Isopoda, Acanthocephala and Hirudinea, with 580 host-parasite combinations, corresponding with more than 370 species of parasites. Protozoa are not included. Platyhelminthes are the major group, with 239 species, including 98 monopisthocotylean monogeneans and 105 digeneans. Copepods include 61 records, and nematodes include 41 records. The list of fish recorded with parasites includes 195 species, in which most (ca. 170 species) are coral reef associated, the rest being a few deep-sea, pelagic or freshwater fishes. The serranids, lethrinids and lutjanids are the most commonly represented fish families. Although a list of published records does not provide a reliable estimate of biodiversity because of the important bias in publications being mainly in the domain of interest of the authors, it provides a basis to compare parasite biodiversity with other localities, and especially with other coral reefs. The present list is probably the most complete published account of parasite biodiversity of coral reef fishes. -

A detailed description of the normal macroscopic arrangement and histological features of the testes, ovary, vitelline tissue, Mehlis’ gland and uterus is provided to aid recognition of the drug-induced lesions, and to provide a basic model to inform similar toxicological studies on F. hepatica in the future. The production of spermatozoa and egg components represents the main energy consuming activity of the adult fluke. Thus the reproductive organs, with their high turnover of cells and secretory products, are uniquely sensitive to metabolic inhibition and sub-cellular disorganisation induced by extraneous toxic compounds. The flukes chosen for study were derived from TCBZ-sensitive (TCBZ-S) and TCBZ-resistant (TCBZ-R) isolates, the status of which had previously been proven in controlled clinical trials. For comparison, flukes collected from flocks where TCBZ resistance had been diagnosed by coprological methods, and from a dairy farm with no history of TCBZ use, were also examined. -

Abstract Adults of the trematode parasite Aspidogaster limacoides DiEsrNG, 1835 were found in the cyprinid Bar- bus barbus (L.) during a parasitological investigation of endohelminths in the years 2001 and 2002 in the Danube downstream of Vienna, Austria. This is the first record of A. limacoides in barbel from the Austrian part of the Danube system. Zusammenfassung Adulte Formen des Trematoden Aspidogaster limacoides DiEsrNG, 1835 wurden in einer Population der Barbe Barbus barbus (L.) in der Donau flussab von Wien gefunden. Die Erfassung erfolgte im Rahmen einer fischparasitologischen Aufnahme in den Jahren 2001 und 2002. Es ist der erste gesicherte Fund von A. limacoides in der Barbe im österreichischen Teil der Donau. Keywords: Aspidogaster limacoides, Barbus barbus, Trematoda, Austria, Danube Introduction The subclass of Aspidogastrea (FAUST & TANG, 1936) consists of a small group of trematodes with a worldwide distribution comprising about 80 species and has not been described for Austria yet. The Aspidogastrea parasitise poikilothermous animals like crustaceans, molluscs, fish, and reptiles in marine and freshwater environments. In contrast to their sister group, the digenean trematodes, they present simple life cycles with no multiplicative larval stages. Aspidogaster limacoides DiEsrNG, 1835 was found in molluscs and fish from river basins in the Ponto-Caspian region (e.g. BYKHOVSKAYA- PAVLOWSKAYA & al, 1962, EVLANOV 1990, NAGIBINA & TIMOVEEVA 1971). The hosts involved consist of mollusc and a definitive or facultative vertebrate host, nevertheless most aspidogastrids require only a single host to complete their life cycle (RHODE 1972). -
Unionid Clams and the Zebra Mussels on Their Shells (Bivalvia: Unionidae, Dreissenidae) As Hosts for Trematodes in Lakes of the Polish Lowland

The total percentage of infected Unionidae and Dreissenidae was 2.5% and 2.6%, respectively. In unionids, we found three species of trematodes: Rhipidocotyle campanula (Digenea: Bucephalidae), Phyllodistomum sp. (Digenea: Gorgoderidae) and Aspigdogaster conchicola (Aspidogastrea: Aspidogastridae). Their proportion in the pool of the infected unionids was 60.9%, 4.4% and 13.0%, respectively. We also found pre-patent invasions (sporocysts and undeveloped cercariae, 13.0%) and echinostome metacercariae (8.7%) (Digenea: Echinostomatidae). The majority of infected Dreissena polymorpha was invaded by echinostome metacercariae (98.1%) and only in a few cases we observed pre-patent invasions (bucephalid sporocysts, 1.9%). The results indicate that in most cases unionids played the role of the first intermediate hosts for digenetic trematodes or final hosts for aspidogastrean trematodes, while dreissenids were mainly the second intermediate hosts. -

It has a body-shape similar to other lepocreadiids from batfishes, such as species of Bianium Stunkard, 1930 and Diploproctodaeum La Rue, 1926, but differs in having multiple testes in ventral and dorsal layers. Here we report Deraiotrema platacis Machida, 1982 for just the second time, infecting the dusky batfish Platax pinnatus (Linnaeus) from the waters off Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef. We present a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the position of this genus inferred from 28S rDNA sequences. Surprisingly, we find the species most closely related to Echeneidocoelium indicum despite the infection of completely unrelated hosts and the presence of two characters (lateral fold in the forebody and multiple testes) that are found elsewhere in the Lepocreadiidae. We conclude that homoplasy within the Lepocreadiidae is extensive and that morphology-based prediction of relationships has little prospect of success.
