Sprigga's View on the Club, Politics, the World Sprigga’s View (cont’d) recalling 1984 & 1990 as it will happen again believe me Spriggsy!! What is important is that we stick together, keep true to our values and things will turn around; and remember that it is not only results on the field which should define OLRFC. We must strive to be an inclusive and welcoming club to everyone Sprigga’s View on the club, politics, the associated with the OLs be they players, potential players, VPs, social members, parents of players or spectators and recognise the part we world, everything! all play to make this happen. This leads me to another word that has apparently come into everyday 2016 has been a year of both terrible shocks and the use this year hygge (roughly pronounced “hu egah”), a Danish term unexpected happening, leading to new words entering everyday often translated as “cosiness” that refers to the sense of happy ease language – Brexit, Nexit, Frexit and Italeave, following the EU found in entertaining company!! It sums up how I felt in the clubhouse Referendum; and Trumpquake after Mike Lewis’s funeral and it is what I feel most times at the Club & AltRight, following the US where we can mix with friends and teammates, reliving fond Presidential elections. We have memories and looking forward to the future in a positive fashion, been used to politicians despite some setbacks along the way. That feeling leads to the words making promises they do not which are not new but have resonated for some 225 years, “Auld Lang Syne” where we vow never to forget our current or departed friends keep, but electing people who but also to embrace new ones by offering a welcoming hand, clearly tell untruths with celebrating success and looking forward with optimism despite the impunity and deny anything adverse happenings that can sometimes be disconcerting. that does not correspond to My resolutions for the New Year will remain private but my 3 hopes in their view of the world is a new low and a challenge for all of us, Rugby terms are: whatever our politics! And a day did not seem to pass without an 1. Scotland 6 Nations champions ending England’s unbeaten untimely celebrity death being announced – David Bowie, Prince, run!!! In that respect, things that have occurred in 2016 and there have been some I am anxious that the club continues to move in the right direction and memorable things: I hope the players and committee members amongst you have been 1. Tim Peake becoming the 1st Brit to make a Spacewalk able to spare the time to complete the RFU survey we have and only the 2nd British Astronaut commissioned. This will enable you to have your voice and I confirm 2. England’s rugby team being unbeaten throughout the continuing support of the OLs. year The latter remarkable achievement followed the humiliation of England failing to qualify for the Quarter Finals of RWC 2015, the 1st time a host nation has suffered such an indignity. What it demonstrates is that however bad things appear to be we must remain positive. This time 12 months ago, the 1st XV had lost 11 of their thirteen matches and were rooted to the bottom of the This season’s VP’s Away Day will be league with a points difference to make you squirm!! Drummond (2002a; 2005; 2010) has found that men will use sport and health-related sports acts to conceal these concerns from others. Accordingly, men’s body dissatisfactions are documented less frequently because the practices drawn upon to conceal them are perceived as routine forms of masculine behaviour. Rugby union is one of the most popular sports played by young men in England. Historically, the male rugby player is culturally perceived as strong, tough and unemotionally articulate. Existing research draws attention to health issues, such as performance stress and injury that arise through participation in this sport. Research also shows that rugby union players are likely to experience concerns about gaining weight, yet these are disguised within the requirements of training for the sport. Although, there are studies that examine the constitution of masculinities, the experience of pain and injury and career transitions among rugby union players there are no studies, as yet, that examine how rugby union men experience body concerns and manage these experiences through their sport.

  • Captaincy and Leadership in Rugby Union
Captaincy and Leadership in Rugby Union HELP, Second Year List of contents 1. Introduction 2. The Four Captains 3. The Views of The Captains 4. Comparing and Contrasting the Captain’s Views 5. Interim Conclusions: Part One 6. Quali - Quantitative Survey 7. Interim Conclusions: Part Two 8. Leadership in Life 9. Overall Conclusions and Learnings 10. What Have I Learned? 11. Appendices 1. Introduction In this project, I am going to either prove or disprove two hypotheses: • firstly, that the position of a rugby player will make a difference to what they think a great captain is; and • secondly, that for a captain to be great, they do not have to be the best in their position. I will prove or disprove these hypotheses through the following research: • conducting semi-quantitative surveys • reading and analysing 4 great rugby captains’ autobiographies (qualitative research) and their views on leadership and captaincy • and finally wider online research. Rugby is a sport and subject that I am very passionate about, and I aspire to play at the highest level. Currently I play for Hampton U13 Bs and my club (Twickenham) first team. I find captaincy interesting as I think it takes great skill and certain characteristics to be a good captain let alone a country-leading world-famous great captain. My personal experiences of rugby captaincy have been periodically with my school team and regularly for my club. My personal view of rugby captaincy based on my experiences is that you need to be the hardest-working player on the pitch at all times – you may not be the most skilled, but you can be the hardest-working, and respect from your team- mates and from your coaches comes from this work ethic.

This is the furthest either team have reached in the County’s history. As a County we seem to produce some very talented players, and this is very much down to the Clubs and Schools in our area being “Development” focused and ensuring that the most talented get the exposure they deserve. We intend as County to continue this theme every season and ensure that as many players as possible have the opportunity to play at their highest potential level.

Dallaglio, less than 72 hours retired, was back at Twickenham yesterday lending his support for a special charity game at HQ on Sept 20 in aid of the injured and maimed British Servicemen who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan in disturbing numbers. Initially pencilled in as non- playing captain and recruitment officer for the Help the Heroes XV, Dallaglio was on top table when his opposition non-playing captain Scott Gibbs, a firm friend from Lions days and Heroes: Scott Gibbs with Trooper Adam looking fit after recently Cocks, who was injured in Afghanistan and Lawrence Dallaglio training for a marathon, suddenly declared his intention of playing as well. The gauntlet having been thrown down, Dallaglio immediately offered his playing services to Phil de Glanville who will manage the Heroes XV. "Scotty Gibbs always plays to win so if Phil de Glanville needs me on the field as well I'm available," said Dallaglio. "I will also be on the phone later to see if Mr Hill and Mr Back are free and fancy a final run out together. "This is going to be a great day in which rugby people can honour all our unsung British heroes in the Services from all the theatres of war, some of whom pay a terrible price for their country.

The Mini & Youth Rugby Blueprint Roadshow October – December 2013 Feedback Report Summary The Mini & Youth Rugby Blueprint Roadshow took place between October and December 2013. The roadshow visited 27 venues around the country and was attended by more than 500 people. The purpose of the roadshow was to give all rugby stakeholders a chance to share their views on how we shape the mini, junior and youth game in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2015. In recent years a great deal of work has gone into considering how the game is played, delivered and organised for young people up to the age of 18. The Age Grade Competition Review has been in process for a couple of years, working on producing a recommended competition and playing framework across clubs, schools and colleges. The aim of the blueprint roadshow was to share recent evidence from players highlighting why they play and why they might have stopped playing and to research the views of stakeholders on the best way forward for the game. The challenge is to provide a game format, playing opportunities and support based on the needs and wants of young people. By getting this balance right we aim to ensure that more young people start, remain and choose a lifelong friendship with rugby union, strengthening our clubs and growing the game in the communities around them. Roadshow Format and Method At each roadshow event, the audience was given an opportunity to consider feedback from players aged 7 – 18 about why they play rugby union (and sport in general) and the reasons why they stop playing.
