GENERAL INTRODUCTION 2. LITERATURE REVIEW 3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 4. RESEARCH FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS 5. SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS References Appendices 1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background to the Problem From the time of its inception in Kenya, Christianity has taken various forms. Initially, there were efforts by pioneering missionaries to establish the Christian faith among different African Communities in Kenya. These efforts were characterised most by Western Christian missions. Efforts of this kind saw the gradual evolvement of such missions into churches within this country (Nthamburi 1991, 1995). The planting of missionary oriented churches was generally followed by another phase. This was the phenomenon of the proliferation of African initiated churches. These African instituted churches remain to date an elaborate illustration of the diverse and at the same time, profound response of Africans to Christianity. The closing years of the Twentieth Century can be said to be experiencing an upsurge of, what within Christian circles, are commonly known as crusades. Evangelistic or proselystic in emphasis, these crusades are an important development in the history of the Church in Kenya. They have become a major expression of Christian activity, demonstrating its vitality. Evidently, the phenomenon of crusades is suffusing many urban areas, with considerably high frequency in some places. In Nairobi, for instance, Uhuru Park, Kamukunji grounds as well as residential estates such as Dandora, Githurai, Huruma, Kibera and Umoja are among the most frequent venues of crusaders. Almost daily, a crusade is taking place somewhere in Nairobi.

THE NATURE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF PROPHECY IN PENTECOSTAL- CHARISMATIC EXPERIENCE: AN EMPIRICAL-BIBLICAL STUDY by Samuel W. Muindi ABSTRACT The notion of prophecy is a Leitmotiv, both in Scripture and in the Church. However, the most common form of prophecy that is witnessed in the Church today is the charismatic prophecy manifestations in the Pentecostal-charismatic movement. Although the latter is now billed as the fastest growing Christian movement in church history, and has brought to the fore the biblical notion of the charisms of the Holy Spirit, the subject of charismatic prophecy has received limited attention in Pentecostal studies. There is therefore a gap in knowledge. The present study is an attempt to address the lacuna from an empirical-biblical perspective.

  • Miracles in Medicine1
S&CB (2017), 29, 121-134 0954-4194 PE TE R M AY Miracles in Medicine1 This is a sensitive subject. We live in a culture where feelings and facts become deeply interwoven. Relative truth, post-truth, truthiness and al ternative facts have become emblems of our day and generation. People can get very upset and discouraged when their personally held convictions come under critical scrutiny. This is particularly so if they have based their faith on a healing ‘miracle’ in their family, which has become for them the persuasive argument that led them to Christ. So I want at the outset to say that Christians have a particular calling to separate feelings from facts and that this has been for me a personal - and necessary - journey. When I was fifteen, I found myself waking each morning with worsen ing headaches. When vomiting and double vision set in, I was admitted to Guy’s Hospital, where in 1961 (the dates are quite important in ‘miracle’ stories as diagnostic technologies are constantly improving), they did an air encephalogram which showed a space-occupying lesion, consistent with a brain tumour. My father broke the news to me. He said it was either benign or malignant, and if the latter, the outlook was very poor. You can imagine the impact this had on me, on my family and on all our friends. On the day of the operation, my father, who was not a churchgoer, found a church in central London near his office and went in to pray. It was an overcast day and the church was empty, dark and silent.

Book Reviews WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BELL? Job Bluu:hud EYangelic:U Prea Darlington 1993 336pp. No price ISBN 0 88234 303 8 Interest in the subject of hell has revived among evangelical Christians in recent years, and not before time. It is a subject nobody likes to talk about. and most of us wish would go away. But evil, and the punishment it deserves, are realities which we camtot afford to ignore, however unpleasant they may be. In this new and extremely comprehensive book, the experienced evangelist. Jolm Blanchard. reminds us of just how important-and how unpleasant-it is. The style of the book is popular, and there are many illustrations from everyday life. At times it is hard to know whether the author is writing for Christians or for seekers, though undoubtedly most of his readers will be believers who want to find out more about an area of Scripture with which they are not familiar enough. Certainly, there is a great deal of excellent material here for the preacher, and if the author is correct in his assessment that few clergy possess anything on the subject of hell, then here is a book which can be recommended. For in spite of the popular style, this book is a serious, and at times deep, study of the Bible's teaching. Mr Blanchard shows, beyond the shadow of doubt. that hell is a major theme of Jesus' preaching, which cannot be ignored in any true pre sentation of the Gospel. The holiness of God and the seriousness of sin are things which retain an awesome power to challenge men and women to tum to Christ.

Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms by Denis J. Bekkering A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfillment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2015 © Denis J. Bekkering 2015 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. My wife Erica is the main reason that this project has been completed.
