[expressions] The Healing Power of Painting A NURSE HELPS PATIENTS AND HERSELF FIND FULFILLMENT THROUGH ART.

“I’ve always been interested in healing, creativity and self-expression,” says Catherine Fraser, a public health nurse on Vancouver Island in Canada, who found a way to com- bine all three in art therapy. For the past 20 years, Fraser has spent some of her off-duty time helping others understand their emotions through creative expression. She asks clients to draw or paint their feelings—literally! It works for Fraser, too, who makes paint- ing a priority in her life. “When I’m not doing the creative work, I feel out of balance.”

Clockwise, from above: Catherine Fraser, RN; “The Dove Leaving the Forest,” acrylic and watercolor, in memory of the artist’s father; “The Estuary Patterns,” acrylic, showing the deep sense of calm in nature; “Nurse Walking Down a Hallway,” watercolor, a tribute to healthcare workers everywhere.
