HydraFacial It’s Worth the HYPE www.flipmagazine.net SEPTEMBER 2020

f you are a skincare fanatic with a love for innovative treatments, add HydraFacial to the top of your wish list. For years I've maintained a strict skincare regimen with light chemical peels incorporated weekly to manage my melasma and congested skin. I thought there was nothing else that could really help my skin as melasma is very difficult to treat. Then I had my first HydraFacial treatment…Game…Changer. IIt was within my first month working for the company, but I still kick myself for waiting so long to get my hands on the device. I’m a Licensed Esthetician, so of course I had heard of how amazing the HydraFacial treatment was, but I had to experience it for myself to believe the hype. One of the company slogans is, “3-Steps, 30 Minutes, Best Skin of Your Life,” and I have to confess that I looked in the mirror on my way home and said to myself, “this is the best my skin has looked in my entire life.” It not only provided immediate results, it has improved the overall state of my skin health over the last year, which is what ultimately sold me on HydraFacial. 1 So, what exactly is a HydraFacial?

hink of it like microdermabrasion that infuses nourishing serums into the skin…but better. The T HydraFacial system has 3 unique serums, disposable tips for each step of the treatment, and a peel that is a combination of glycolic and salicylic acids. Th ese options allow the HydraFacialist to personalize each treatment. Oh, and did I mention how painless and eff ective extractions are?! I’m talking squeaky clean skin with NO pain!

You can upgrade to a Deluxe or Platinum HydraFacial to add a HydraFacial Booster or one formulated by your favorite skincare lines to treat your specifi c skin concerns. HydraFacial has partnered with ZO Skin Health, Alastin, Sente, Circadia, HydroPeptide, and NassifMD, to provide treatment options for all skin concerns. My current faves are the Alastin TriHex Pro Booster and the HydraFacial Britenol Booster. TriHex Pro works on clearing out damaged collagen and elastin so the skin can produce healthy cells, and Britenol is loaded with brighteners and antioxidants to calm my melasma. Some of the Boosters also have home-care kits available so you can maintain your HydraFacial results in between appointments.

THE TREATMENT Only HydraFacial uses patented technology to cleanse, extract, and hydrate. HydraFacial super serums are made with nourishing ingredients that create an instantly gratifying glow in just 3 steps:

CLEANSE + PEEL EXTRACT + HYDRATE FUSE + PROTECT

Uncover a new layer of skin with Remove debris from pores with Saturate the skin’s surface with gentle exfoliation and relaxing painless suction. Nourish with intense antioxidants and peptides to resurfacing. moisturizers that quench the skin. maximize your glow.

What type of results can you expect?

mmediately aft er the HydraFacial treatment, your skin will feel refreshed and hydrated, and you’ll have Ia beautiful glow. Th e ingredients in Boosters and the Antiox + (serum in the last HydraFacial step) are highly active (just means their working!) so you may turn pink for a very short amount of time, but that HydraFacial glow will remain.

With the use of high-quality home-care products suited for your skin, you’ll maintain these results for 2-4 weeks – lifestyle and overall skin concerns have a lot to do with this too. It’s recommended that you schedule appointments every .. SEPTEMBER 2020 SEPTEMBER .. 4-6 weeks to continue nourishing and treating your skin. 2 Why should HydraFacial be at the top of your wish list?

hether you’re new to facials or maintain appointments with your Injector or MD, HydraFacial can Weasily fit into your lifestyle. There are so many aesthetic treatment options available, but there ar- en’t any that perform like HydraFacial. It’s a safe and effective treatment for all skin types and concerns, and it plays well with other treatments – Lasers, Injectables, Microneedling, etc. all perform better on exfoliated, hydrated, and nourished skin. HydraFacial also creates the perfect can- vas for your home-care products to work effectively, and for a flawless makeup application.

Th ere are very few non-invasive treatments that WOW me like HydraFacial does – and I’m not just saying that because I work for the company; my skin has never been healthier than it is right now. Th e HydraFacial treatment literally sucks out all the gunk out of the pores to make you feel and look cleaner than ever. Th e results improve aft er every treatment, so you can easily monitor your skin health journey and identify which Boosters work for you. In addition to my monthly treatments, I use the ZO Skin Brightening System to manage my melasma and congestion at home, which helps prolong the HydraFacial glow.

How can you experience a HydraFacial?

ydraFacial is a global brand, so no matter where you live, there is likely a HydraFacial provider nearby. HTh e company also hosts a number of community events that will likely resume in July, so if you hear of one near you, please stop by to meet local providers and experience the HydraFacial vibe – you may see me there too! In the meantime, take the Skin Health Assessment for your skin health score (my last score was 72 – yikes!), a customized treatment plan, and link to fi nd a provider near you. Oh, and please ask to see your “Gunkie” aft er your HydraFacial – you can thank me later! .. SEPTEMBER 2020

The things that have changed are that I’m only applying moisturizer with no foundation as I’m loving this break for my skin. My hair now lives in a ponytail as I’m no longer fussing with a flat iron and my outfits are admittedly, much more comfortable as I can’t be bothered with anything that doesn’t have an elastic waist band. Video conferencing etiquette: Try, but not too hard please. It’s important to be sensitive to the current social climate. Many people who are lucky enough to still be employed are juggling a lot at home right now. Sharing a workspace with a spouse or roommate or children isn’t easy. Add in now being a home school teacher to your regular work day and we are witnessing super hero level miracle workers on a daily basis. While it’s important www.flipmagazine.net SEPTEMBER 2020 to set a professional tone, this really isn't the time for a full suit and tie. A nice sweater or collared shirt says I care about my workday without being insensitive. I’ve seen a lot of my friends in the corporate world who normally are dressed to the nines just wearing a company logo tee, polo or sweater and that is totally the right tone.

As our days change, so do our fashion choices. I for one am loving the shift towards com- fort and what brings joy. On a recent conference call, I had a fellow attendee thank me for wearing my bright yellow sweater. She said it brightened up her day. We were also able to hear more about the making of the album down in Memphis, TN, which is also the home- town of Morgan’s husband and lead guitarist, Doug Wamble. We will be sharing a lot of the images from the work done at the studio in Memphis right here in this article! I’ve teased Morgan about being an independent musician now for the past 5 years, and the obvious vision of who was in charge in the studio when they recorded Memphis Magnetic!

Morgan has relayed to me the behind-the-scenes thought process for recording in Memphis, TN, during a pre- vious telephone interview, but wanting to write and record outside of New York City, where Morgan and Doug live now, was the main inspiration. As it turned out, a brand-new studio was opening in Memphis, the Memphis

Morgan has always had horns in the background of her recorded music, but for this album there were some special twists. First of all, her husband, Doug, who is a great arranger of horns, with heavy personal infl uence from the likes of Wynton and Brandford Marsalis, got to utilize a time-tested and customary use of a trumpet, a sax, and a baritone sax for this particular album. His arrangements are spot-on perfect and truly Memphis sounding…a wonderful addition to the beautiful voice of Morgan James. During the VIP portion of the show I referenced at the beginning of this article, we all got to meet the second dog in Morgan and Doug’s life, Eunice. Previously we got to meet Luther, who is a very sedate and well-behaved canine. Eunice is defi nitively more of a fun troublemaker…simply adding more fun and enjoyment to the large contingent of fans present for this personal time with Morgan and Doug before the show. As you can imagine, the show itself was just sheer joy. Morgan concentrated much of the show on the Memphis Magnetic album. However, we all were also rewarded with many of Morgan’s previous hits, from her record company album released over fi ve years ago, to several of her independent tunes that made the large audience

12 IMMUNITY BOOST WITH NUTRITION COACH ALISON RILEY

Hey all you cool cats & kittens!

If you are anything like me, you are spending some more time in sweatpants, getting more acquainted with Netfl ix, and trying to keep your sanity intact while processing a new way of living! I’m sure you have heard this already, but I will repeat it anyway: You are not alone! It’s ok and NORMAL to be feeling that sense of uncertainty and stress; it’s ok to have good days and some rough ones. Feel the feelings, breathe through them… and move forward. ONWARD!

It is imperative that each of us practice self-care right now: mind, body and soul. SO, let's take a moment to break this down and simplify. The mind and soul are just like the muscles in your body. The more we use them, practice stretching and pour positive energy into them, the more we grow and thus stronger they each become. As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, I understand the magnitude of mindful self-care. In many areas gyms are still closed, here in the northeast it is our rainy season, and we miss our loved ones. It is easy to say, "To hell with it, I give up!" However, each day is a new morning; a fresh start bringing renewed hope and possibility. Along with social distancing, we must be building up our immune systems as best we can for ourselves, co-workers and loved ones! Taking care of your body helps immensely with your brain functions and moods. Eating nutrient dense foods such as fruits and vegetables is vital. I am sure you have heard that one before! Below I break down the MOST essential vitamins, minerals and colorful ‘friends’ you SHOULD be eating to boost your immune system right NOW!

Found in oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, strawberries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, sweet yellow peppers, papayas and acerola cherries, .. SEPTEMBER 2020 Vitamin C is important because it helps repair ALL body tissues, heals wounds and protects our immune system. The recommended daily amount of vitamin C is 90 mg for men and 75 for women.

Commonly found in shellfi sh, such as crab, lobster and clams, but if you are not a seafood eater, meat is an excellent source of zinc, along with chickpeas, lentils, eggs and nuts. Zinc plays such an important role because it assists our immune system to properly heal wounds, breakdown carbohydrates and shield us from disease. The daily recommended allowance for zinc is 8 mg for woman and 11 mg for men. 13 Immunity Boost

Found in oysters, spirulina, kale, swiss chard, dark chocolate, shitake mushrooms, lamb, hemp, whole grains, beef and le- gumes, copper is essential to the human body; in conjunction with iron it helps the body to create red blood cells. In addition to preventing cardiovascular disease, it also helps maintain immune function. The daily recommended allowance for av- erage adult is between 40 mg and 60 mg.

Ah this one is one of my favorites to discuss! A whopping SEVENTY PERCENT of your immune system is housed in your gut! It is extremely important to maintain a healthy envi- ronment in our digestive system. Yogurt, kombucha, pickles, sourdough bread, kefi r and sauerkraut are among the top contenders for most powerful probiotic fares. Keeping your body alkalized with apple cider vinegar, lemon water and kombucha is also highly recommended, as disease thrives in an acidic environment! The rec- ommended daily allowance for pro-biotics is between one billion and 10 billion colony forming units for an average adult. Digestive Advantage is a brand I myself take and approve of.

Wonderful sources of complex B vitamins are found in brocco- li, salmon, beans, kale, swiss chard, liver and nutritional yeast. The B’s are essential because they keep our cells in function- ing order. Along with creating new blood cells and assisting in metabolism, they also maintain our brain cells, skin cells and many tissues. There are 8 types of vitamin B’s: thiamin which is B1, ribofl avin which is B2, ni-acin which is B3, pantothenic acid which is B5, vitamin B6, biotin which is B7, folate which is B9 and vitamin B12. Together these make up the B complex. Taking a B supplement has also been shown to allevi- ate depression and anxiety, along with vitamin D. Many B complex supplements contain the recommended daily dose for an average adult. .. SEPTEMBER 2020 SEPTEMBER ..

14 Immunity Boost

More important than ever (right up there with don’t touch your face!), water makes up an estimated 60% of our bodies. The heart and brain are made up of 73% water and the lungs 83%. I’m sure the temptation for alcohol may be on the rather elevated side lately, however… while we are focusing on building UP our immune systems, any type of alcohol SUPPRESSES our immune systems and dehydrates us. Even our bones require an estimated 31% water! Is a hangover and or headache something else you would like to be dealing with during this pandemic? I didn’t think so. Beer and wine will always be there, so take it easy right now.

In addition to vitamins, there are some other habits to consider that improve your overall health. I implore you to stop several times a day, relax your shoulders, and try the 4 - 7 - 8 technique. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, then hold it for 7 seconds, and exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. This will help keep you physiologically in check, decrease fatigue, help with hypertension .. AUGUST 2020 and improve headache symptoms. Don’t forget to stretch also!

It is OK to watch the news once a day to keep up to date on the latest developments but having the news on all day will make anyone crazy and anxious. It’s a great time to put down our devices and stay in the moment. Open your windows if you can, walk in the woods, read a book, heck—write that NOVEL you’ve been putting off ! Meanwhile, don’t forget your vitamins, catch up on your sleep and smile… because you can.

15 NASHLEY WATSON FRONTLINE HERO • COVID-19 SURVIVOR • SUPER MOM Interview by Mandy Pauline

ashley Watson has been many things in her life: a daughter, a friend, a mother, a fi rst responder, a medical professional and a survivor of many things (including most recently, Covid-19). Nashley was Nraised in a small town in Connecticut and began her career in the medical fi eld as a Jr. Firefi ghter at the young age of 14. Th e eldest of 3 girls, she became a natural leader and caretaker. When a family tragedy in 1998 involving her cousin and a drunk driver hit, she knew without a doubt that she would work as a fi rst responder. Her destiny was laid out for her. Over the years she has worked as a fi re fi ghter, EMT, security offi cer (even supporting Las Vegas in this role during the mass shooting tragedy). She now works at an emergency room in Las Vegas that is specifi cally for casino workers as a unit coordinator. Like many of us, when the news of Covid-19 came, Nashley had a lot of diffi cult decisions to make. With the slow trickle of information available and news reports changing daily, it was hard to really know just how much of an impact she would be facing. From working in isolated Covid-19 tents, to the diffi cult decision to social distance from her young sons, to a positive Covid-19 diagnosis, through recovery and coming out on the other side only to be furloughed, she has had some very challenging months to say the least. Mostly recovered, but with a lingering cough, Nashley made time to speak with me about her experience.

Flip: What is it that you do and where do you work?

Nashley: I work in an emergency room in Las Vegas specifi cally supporting the culinary union for casino work- ers. As the unit coordinator, I support doctors and nurses by managing paperwork like referrals and prescription orders. I also assist with checking patients in and discharging them. During our time fi ghting Covid-19, this meant working both inside of the emergency room and also off ering support in the isolated tents outside. Flip: Wow, sounds like you are holding the whole place to- gether. What led you to do this kind of work?

Nashley: I started as a Jr. Fire Fighter when I was 14. My cous- in was the victim of a drunk driver accident and that really made me want to pursue a career as a fi refi ghter. Th en at my high school graduation, my Mom had her fi rst heart attack. Healthcare really became my passion. Flip: So it’s really been a lot of personal experiences that have pushed you into this direction?

Nashley: Yes. I was present for my Mom’s 3rd heart attack 5 .. SEPTEMBER 2020 SEPTEMBER .. years aft er her fi rst heart attack and I worked on her and was 16 able to save her life.
