Dear Alumni, Parents, Students and Friends, This is an exciting time for Widener University and its athletic programs. This year, more than 500 student-athletes will participate in 20 different sports and achieve distinction in both the classroom and on the playing field. Widener boasts 51 Academic All-America recipients in its history, including five in 2013-14, and ranks the University in the top 10 percent nationally among all NCAA Division III institutions. This distinction places Widener in prestigious academic company with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Emory University and Johns Hopkins University also ranked in the top tier. The impressive and nationally recognized academic accomplishments of our student-athletes are mir- rored by Widener’s athletic success. In just the last nine years, dedicated student-athletes have won 31 Middle Atlantic Conference championships for Widener University. This includes four last year and 18 in the last five years. The University also is proud to have in the last eight seasons 10 MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year, 95 student-athletes named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All- Area Teams and 10 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-Americas. In football, the Pride in 2012 won their league-leading 19th Middle Atlantic Conference title and played in the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in their illustrious history. The men’s lacrosse team has won a conference title in 14 of the last 19 years, the men’s indoor track & field team has won five straight MAC titles, the men’s outdoor field track & field squad has captured four of the last five MAC crowns and the women’s basketball squad in 2012-13 became the first team in 41 years of women’s athletics at Widener to win an NCAA Tournament game. Widener’s athletics department took a huge step in 2010 when its men’s and women’s soccer teams played a regular season game at PPL Park in Chester, home of the Philadelphia Union. Widener, which also hosted the games in 2011, entered a partnership in 2010 as the official university of the Philadelphia Union, PPL Park and the Union’s youth soccer partner. Widener’s football team carries with it an illustrious history. The Pride in 2012 became the fourth NCAA Division III team to compete in their 1,100th game. In 2011, they became the fourth Divi- sion III squad to notch their 650th victory. Guiding the Pride is Mike Kelly, the 24th football coach in Widener history. Kelly has served as a head football coach twice before in his career. First he coached at Division II Valdosta State Univer- sity from 1997-99, coaching three All-Americas and 23 All-Gulf South Conference players. He later served as head coach of the of the in 2009. He started his career with coaching stints at Marietta College, Capital University, Ohio Wesleyan Uni- versity and San Francisco State University before moving to the Canadian Football League.
