Matthew 3 V 1-12 (NIV) in Those Days John the Baptist Came, Preaching In

Matthew 3 v 1-12 (NIV)

In those days came, preaching in the wilderness of 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet : “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,

make straight paths for him.’”] 4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the . 7 But when he saw many of the and coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[c] the and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

John the Baptist – Preparing the way for

How passionate are you about sharing your faith? Is it something that is important to you or do you shy away from it?

Compare John the Baptist to the religious leaders of the day:

• Are there any similarities? • What makes them different from each other?

How does this make you think about sharing your faith with others?

Jesus did not need anyone to prepare the way for him (he was the Son of God!), however, God used John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. Philemon verse 6 says ‘I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Jesus Christ.’ Does this change the way you think about who evangelism is for?

To be able to share what Jesus has done we need to understand the – have a look at the four point gospel http://www.the4points.com/uk/ or two ways to live http://www.matthiasmedia.com.au/2wtl/2wtlonline.html . After looking at these do you feel more confident in the simplicity of the gospel and what Jesus has done for you?

What hold us back from sharing our faith?

• Fear of rejection, failure, not knowing what to say • Isolation and only mixing in Christian circles

How can these be overcome?

Luke 10 v 1 says ‘After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.’ We are not meant to be sharing out faith in isolation from each other – God has given us each other in All Nations to work together in sharing the gospel.

What ways does this work and could this work better? How do you feel we would be more supportive to each other in sharing our faith together?

Take some time to let the simple message of the gospel sink in:

• God loves you • We have turned away from God • Jesus sacrificed his life on the cross for you • How are you going to live knowing this truth?

Now you know this how are you going to intentionally prepare the way for Jesus with the people that God has put in your path?
