    The Karmapa controversy A compilation of information 1 Foreword This work fills a requirement: to provide all meaningful information for a good understanding about the Karmapa controversy which, since 1992, shakes up the Karma Kagyu lineage. While web surfing, one can notice the huge information unbalance between the two differing sides: on Situ Rinpoche's side, there is plenty of documentation, while that on Shamar Rinpoche's side is sparse. On Situ Rinpoche's side, many websites give out information, with some, dedicated to this task, having almost daily updates. By comparison, Shamar Rinpoche side does not even provide the minimum information sufficient to understand its point of view. Now, complete information easily found is essential for everyone to make up one's opinion. To limit oneself to only one version of the facts does not allow for a full understanding and leads to all extremes, which we have sorely witnessed since 1992. Studying this controversy, one is surprised by the distressing level of disinformation and ignorance surrounding it. Few people know truly the circumstances and the unfolding of all these events which profoundly shook our lineage. Most contented themselves with adopting the view point of their entourage, siding either way, bringing up real quarrels and polemics between disciples of the same masters. It even came up to murders and monasteries attacks ! And yet, without going for any debate or confrontation, simply acquainting oneself with information provided by each side, allows us to stand back, to grasp the ins and outs in a more objective way and finally to reach a valid opinion in this matter.

    II: A commentary by Geshe Dawa Gyaltsen on the 5 th Karmapa’s “Prophecies Arisen from Experience” The following is an edited translation of a commentary, written in Tibetan by Geshe Dawa Gyaltsen on selected excerpts from the prophecies of the 5 th Karmapa. (All footnotes are mine.) An American, Lea Terhune, who was Situ Rinpoche’s secretary, wrote a book in which she made false statements about my uncle, Mipham Rinpoche, who is the father of the 17 th Karmapa Thaye Dorje. First, she claims that Mipham Rinpoche is a fake rinpoche. Then she depicts him as a desperate father, who brought his two sons around to the monasteries begging for them to be recognized as reincarnated rinpoches. She implies that as a result of Mipham Rinpoche’s begging, Shamar Rinpoche recognized his elder son as the 17 th Karmapa. 38 If this were true, then His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s recognition of the younger son as Sonam Tsemo Rinpoche would also be the result of the father’s begging. A few years ago, Situ Rinpoche’s people spread a rumour that Karmapa Thaye Dorje was Bhutanese, and not Tibetan. However, Situ Rinpoche’s own secretary, Ms. Terhune, gave evidence in her book that Karmapa Thaye Dorje was in fact born in Lhasa – the eldest son of Mipham Rinpoche and his wife, Dechen Wangmo. It would appear that Situ Rinpoche’s followers are tripping over their own arguments. This brings to mind a Tibetan proverb: “The madman is not mad. It is the one who follows the madman who is mad.” Whatever her claims might be, Terhune does not know Mipham Rinpoche, his wife or his children.

Palpung means Mount of Excellence, the glorious accumulation of the best knowledge and wisdom lineages in various fields: meditation, academics, literature, medicine, art, etc.; the glorious union of study and practice. Chöje Lama Gelongma Palmo has been studying and practicing the sacred dharma under the Palpung Sherab Ling Monastic Seat from her very taking refuge under Buddha, Dharma and Sangha from me.     Karmapas: A historical and philosophical introduction Dr. Ashwani Kumar he Karmapa is the s.Piritual leader of the Kagyud school Of.Tibetan Buddhism and ranks third in the Tibetan spiritual hierarchy after Dalai TLama and Panchan lama. Karmapa is an important sub-sect ofKagyudpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. From Kagyud-pa arose four major and eight minor sub-sects. The origin of these sects can be traced from the Buddha period in India. It is a fact that the Bud~ha advised his disciples not to follow his teachings blindly, but to analyse them according to their own intellect and experience. The Buddha had liberal view regarding the adaptations of his teachings. He told his followers to anaiyse his teaching well, and only then adopt them, but not for the sake ofshowing him respect. Probably due to this liberal viewpoint ofthe Buddha their arose a number of Buddhist schools in India and other parts ofthe world. Indian Buddhist tradition generally speaks of"eighteen" such schools, but that is a mere traditional number and in fact more than thirty are known to us, at least by name. I All these branches appeared one after another in close succession within three or four hundred years after the Buddha's Mahaparinirvana. AC00rding to the Ceylonese sources thenrst schism took place 100 years after the Nirvana. The remaining sects have arisen between the second and the third councils, i.e., between 100 B.C. and 247 B.C., most of them belonged to the second century after the Nirvana, but the last six in the third century.2 A hundred years after the Buddha's Mahaparinirvanadissension srose -­ among the monks-- in regard to the actual doctrine of the master and their interpretations which ultimately led to the origin of sects in Indian Buddhism.

  • Sera Monk Discusses Shugden Fundamentalism
    A monk sent these thoughts about fundamentalism in Buddhism to the Editor staff of New Statesman: The scourge of fundamentalism is not merely a problem in the monotheistic faiths based on the god of Abraham. As with other world faiths, Buddhism has had in its fold members who believe unequivocally that they hold the ultimate truth, and that their detractors are dangerously mistaken and must be corrected. It is out of the energy of such fundamentalism that Dorje Shugden was promoted from Dolgyal, the spirit of Dol - a minor regional guardian; to a fully enlightened Buddha-protector by the conservative establishment within the Gelugpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Gelugpa tradition’s beginnings are the teachings of Lama Tzongkhapa, the ultimate non-sectarian lama, who based his writings on a combination of Indian treatises, Mahayana Sutras, and teachings he received from masters of the Nyingma, Sakya and Kagyu traditions. His approach was essentially non-sectarian and firmly rooted in a close adherence to the Indian texts. How strange then, that those who claim they are “protecting the purity” of Tsongkhapa’s teachings from the non-sectarian approach of the Dalai Lama, have taken up as the banner of their cause, Dorje Shugden, a deity of dubious origins. Not found in any of the classical Indian texts which Tzongkhapa taught his followers should be the ultimate authority, or in any of the extensive writings of Tsongkhapa himself, Shugden in fact is a worldly deity who has become the banner of the fundamentalists. Phabongkha Rinpoche, the root guru of Trijiang Rinpoche and founding lama of the Shugden movement, never gave clear reasons why he felt Shugden was a Buddha.

    MASTERWORKS A JOURNEY THROUGH HIMALAYAN ART MODEL OF THE MAHABODHI TEMPLE Eastern India, probably Bodhgaya; ca. 11th century Stone (serpentinite) Rubin Museum of Art Purchased with funds from Ann and Matt Nimetz and Rubin Museum of Art C2019.2.2 According to Buddhist tradition, Bodhgaya is the place where the Buddha meditated under the bodhi tree and attained his awakened state. Mahabodhi Temple was built to commemorate this event at this site during the reign of Ashoka (ca. 268–232 BCE), the famed patron of Buddhism credited with building many temples and stupas. It attained the form seen in this model in the fifth to sixth century. A pilgrimage site revered across the Buddhist world, Mahabodhi Temple was often reproduced as portable pilgrimage souvenirs like this one. Such replicas also enshrined symbolic representations of the site, such as bodhi leaves, which were considered relics. Seeing a replica of the temple served as a substitute for those who couldn’t visit the site in person, and it acted as a symbol of remembrance for those who did. Small models like this one have been found in Burma and Tibet, and full-scale temple replicas were constructed in places like Nepal and Beijing. This model was likely created in Bodhgaya itself.
