September 2019 What’s On & Where To Go 3 words by Kristina Haren one descends into the forest they may feel slightly concerned about the return trip, however the path runs in a circuit with a gradual climb on the way back. Only a few minutes into the walk and hikers are rewarded with a beautiful creek and wide pool, excellent for a picnic stop and even a swim when the weather is warmer. Platypus are commonly viewed here so it is worth a quiet break for a chance to see these beautiful creatures. Continuing around the track, the path crosses back over the creek and makes a gentle climb towards the road. Hikers emerge from the forest a couple of hundred metres from the car park. The walk takes about 20 minutes not including breaks. A few kilometres further down Danbulla State forest road is Lake Euramoo lookout. The lookout is directly beside the car park with a bench to have a break and enjoy the lovely view. If you’re up for another short trek, there is a loop through the forest that is clearly marked. There are no views of the lake from the path just dense forest. The path leads hikers along a wooden boardwalk for a very gentle climb that loops back to the car park. The whole walk takes about 20 minutes and it is important to note that there is no access to Lake Euramoo. MoboSandy Creek Tate Crater River Photo by Kristina Haren Bush walking isn't just about exercise. The wonder on a child's face is proof in the pudding, there is a big world out there and it is worth exploring. An important part of a child's education is not just in a classroom but also in nature. For most people, both big and small, spending time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, increases happiness and creates an overall sense of wellbeing. Not only that, but by developing an appreciation of nature, a child will grow up to appreciate the world we live in and have a desire to preserve it for future generations. The Tablelands offer an incredible array of walks that highlight various forest settings and therefore learning is endless. Here are a couple of short walks that are excellent for kids who are breaking in their hiking legs to get out and explore. Mobo Creek Crater is a hidden gem on Danbulla State forest road, just 9km from the top of the Gillies Highway. Not as popular a stop as Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham, but well worth the few minutes of extra driving. The start of the trail is well sign-posted with a car park alongside it. The path begins with a steep descent that has been eased by several sets of steps into a forest that is thick and eerily quiet. There are no traffic sounds on this path, only Lake Euramoo Circuit the call of birds and the distant sound of running water. As Photo by Kristina Haren 4 What’s On & Where To Go September 2019 Heading back towards the Gillies Highway, it's worth even a short stop at the Cathedral Fig tree. This majestic giant is only a 300m walk from the car park. The paths are wide and easy to walk and there is a boardwalk that allows hikers to circle the tree at the end of the path and be inside the tree. Finish up the walk with a stop at Altitude Café on the Gillies Highway to refill the tank with a delicious meal or treat. Altitude Café is a family friendly space with homemade meals and treats from locally sourced produce. They also have delicious specialty drinks including coffee and Kombucha made from local fruit that is exclusive to Altitude. We are blessed on the Tablelands to have a large array of options to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. There are so many walks to choose from it would be impossible to highlight all of them in just one article and as such we will showcase them in later magazines. Below is a list of other short walks suitable for short legs around the Tablelands. Remember to check in with the local Visitor Information Centre for updated track conditions. Further visitor specific information is required to provide managers with an understanding of patterns of visitor use, behaviour, perceptions, attitudes, expectations and satisfaction. A comprehensive understanding of these visitor aspects is critical to effective visitor management including minimisation of biophysical impacts and maximising benefits to the land manager, visitor and community.
