Mjöberg, a Swedish entomologist commissioned by the Swedish government to document rainforest fauna and flora, spent seven months in the tropical rainforest region of far north Queensland in 1913, mainly exploring areas around the Atherton Tablelands. -

Psaltoda antennetta n.sp. and P. maccallumi n.sp. are cicadas restricted to rainforest habitats in northeastern Queensland. Psaltoda mossi n.sp. is far more widespread, ranging through eastern Queensland to northern New South Wales. Psaltoda antennetta is remarkable for its foliate antennal flagella, an attribute almost unique among the Cicadoidea. Relationships of these three species are discussed and a revised key to all Psaltoda species provided. MOULDS, M.S., 2002. Prominent and endangered components of the GAB spring community are snails of the family Hydro- biidae. This paper examines the evolutionary relationships of the entire hydrobiid fauna associated with the GAB, and includes appropriate non-GAB species to place the GAB fauna in a broader phylogenetic context. The Queensland genus Jardinella is a focus of this paper, providing a Wne scale examination of relationships between spring supergroups in the northeastern regions of the GAB. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses performed on 16S, CO1, and combined sequence data from 40 hydrobiid taxa found four major clades of Australian taxa. The analysis revealed that at least three separate colonization events of the GAB spring fauna have occurred. Two of these are represented by considerable radiations, (1) Jardinella to the north and east and (2) Caldicochlea, Fonscochlea, and possibly Trochidrobia in South Australia. -

Email: [email protected] William Hann’s Northern Expedition set off on 26 June 1872 from Mount Surprise, a pastoral station west of Townsville, to determine the mineral and agricultural potential of Cape York Peninsula. The expedition was plagued by disharmony and there was later strong criticism of the leadership and its failure to provide any meaningful analysis of the findings. The authors (a descendent of Norman Taylor, expedition geologist, and a descendent of Jerry, Indigenous guide and translator) use documentary sources and traditional knowledge to establish the role of Jerry in the expedition. They argue that while Hann acknowledged Jerry’s assistance to the expedition, his role has been downplayed by later commentators.
