Weeks Abstract This chapter compares two sexual systems: hermaphroditism (each individual can produce gametes of either sex) and gonochorism (each individual produces gametes of only one of the two distinct sexes) in crustaceans. These two main sexual systems contain a variety of alternative modes of reproduction, which are of great interest from applied and theoretical perspectives. The chapter focuses on the description, prevalence, analysis, and interpretation of these sexual systems, centering on their evolutionary transitions. The ecological correlates of each reproduc- tive system are also explored. In particular, the prevalence of “unusual” (non- gonochoristic) re- productive strategies has been identified under low population densities and in unpredictable/ unstable environments, often linked to specific habitats or lifestyles (such as parasitism) and in colonizing species. Finally, population- level consequences of some sexual systems are consid- ered, especially in terms of sex ratios. The chapter aims to provide a broad and extensive overview of the evolution, adaptation, ecological constraints, and implications of the various reproductive modes in this extraordinarily successful group of organisms. The material dealt with in this paper was collected almost entirely by myself during the period extending from the summer of 1930 up to the present time, except a few species ob- tained from the S6y6-maru Expedition undertaken by the Ircperial Fisheries Experimental Station during the years 1926-1930. Descrip- tions of the latter have already been given (HiRo, 1933a). The present material consists, with few exceptions, of specimens from the littoral zone and shallow ;vvater ; noRe of the specimens are irom deep water. However, I have paid special attention to the commensal forms from the ecological and fauRistic standpoint, and have thes been able to enumerate a comparatively large number of species in such a re- stricted area as this district. -
The Cirripedia of New Caledonia
The Cirripedia of New Caledonia Diana S. lONES Western Australian MlISeum [email protected] The Indo-Pacific deep-sea benthos was investigated by major expeditions such as those of «Challenger» (1873-1876), «Investigator» (1884-] 887), «Valdiva» (1898-] 899), «Siboga» (1899 1900), «Albatross» (1907-1910) and «Galathea» (1950-52). However, none of these expeditions col lected in the waters of New Caledonia and its surrounding areas. The cirripede fauna of the region was first documented through the brief report of Fischer (1884), who described the shallow water bar nacles of New Caledonia. Fischer briefly listed 15 species from specimens deposited in the Musee de Bordeaux by the missionaries Montrouzier and Lambert. From that time, there was no documenta tion of the fauna until the latter half of the 20th century, when a rigorous collection and taxonomic program was conducted in the region supported through IRD (ORSTOM) and the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris. Since 1978, numerous barnacle specimens have been collected in the deep waters off Vanuatu (MUSORSTOM 8 1994), New Caledonia, the Chesterfield and Loyalty Islands (BIOCAL 1985, MUSORSTOM 41985, LAGON 1985, MUSORSTOM 5 1986.CHALCAL2 1986, SMIB21986.SMIB31987.CORAIL2 1988,MUSORSTOM61989.VAUBAN 1989,ALIS 1989, SMIB61990,BERYX21992,BATHUS21993,SMIB81993,HALIPR0219(6),the Wall ace and Futuna Islands, Combe. Field. Tuscarora and Waterwich Banks (MUSORSTOM 7 1(92). the Norfolk Ridge (SMIB 4 1989, SMIB 5 1989. BATHUS 3 1993, BATHUS 4 19(4) and the Matthew and Hunter Islands (VOLSMAR 1989). Examination of these collections has yielded an exceptional diversity of thoracican cirripedes. Buckeridge (1994, 1997) provided a comprehensive account of the deep-sea Verrucomorpha (Cirripedia) from collections made by several French cruises in the New Caledonian area and the Wallis and Futuna Islands. -

In this note we record the occurence of Lepas anatifera (Cirripedia) on the hull of a coastal supply boat that operates only in restricted inshore waters of Arraial do Cabo. This species is usually found on tropical and subtropical oceanic waters and, at region, could be classified as transient species. Kolbasov and Galena B. Zevina ABSTRACT A new species of Paralepas from near Madagascar is described and its affinities are in- dicated. A generalized complemental male and a male cyprid larva were found attached below the aperture in two specimens. This is the first male reported for this group of barnacles, and its morphological characters are investigated. Twenty-two species of the genus Paralepas Pilsbry were reported in the last review of this genus (Zevina, 1982), and four have since been described. These latter are: P. robusta Rossel, 1981, from the Philippines; P. seama Foster, 1981, from New Zealand; P. ichtiandri Zevina, 1983, from Nasca Ridge (off the coast of Peru, 200S, 800W), and P. martini Young, 1990, off the coast of Brazil. The new species described here is from the Indian Ocean. Species of Paralepas are restricted to the tropical and subtropical waters of the World Ocean, mostly between the subtidal and upper bathyal zones. These bar- nacles are often found in association with other organisms, such as mollusks, echinoids, and large crustaceans. No previous works have mentioned comple- mental males in Paralepas. In the course of a survey of the collections at the Institution of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, three specimens of Paralepas new species, pre- served in alcohol, were found. They were attached near the orifice of a gastropod belonging to the genus Xenophora. One adult specimen bears a complemental male, attached externally to the lower part of the orifice (Fig. -

These are designated as four genera, Oxynaspis Darwin, 1852, Archoxynaspis gen. nov., Pycnaspis gen. nov. and Minyaspis gen. nov. Five new species from Astrolabe Reef in Fiji (Oxynaspis perekrestenkoi sp. nov., O. joankovanae sp. nov., Minyaspis amylaneae sp. nov., M. opreskoi sp. nov. and M. welchi sp. nov.) and one from Palau (Oxynaspis joandianae sp. nov.) are described. A morphological character dataset and resulting phylogeny supporting the new generic divisions is presented. All but two of the 24 species previously known and all six of the newly described species are intimately associated with antipatharians.
