Although most of you probably know the stories of biblical men — Adam, Moses, Noah, Jesus, and Peter, to name several — many biblical women remain mysteries. Yet women play critical roles in the Bible and in salvation history. Some are famous, and others are unknown; some are powerful, and others are powerless. Like their biblical male coun- terparts, some women used their gifts and abilities for good, and some for evil. But no matter what their individual personalities and contributions, their stories are often crucial to understanding salvation history. They also provide a multitude of examples for readers today. From the original woman on earth (Eve) described in the first book of the Bible to the “woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet” (Revelation 12:1) mentioned in the last book, we discuss all the notable and noteworthy women in sacred scripture. Their examples provide a perspective on history, as well as enlight- enment on the modern-day world. Evangelical Women and Secular Society in New Zealand: An Investigation into Feminism as an Ideology of Empowerment By Lydia A. Ellis A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Religious Studies School of Art History, Classics and Religious Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2012 II ABSTRACT This thesis examines the resurgence of evangelicalism in New Zealand and the conflicting nature of the lives that evangelical women in New Zealand live. Evangelicalism in New Zealand is growing and evolving and thus evangelical women are by necessity adapting to their secular setting whilst maintaining their faith. This study reveals many interesting findings, illustrating the often contradictory and challenging issues that evangelical women must face as they identify with feminism as a secular symbol while maintaining a conservative evangelical faith. Evangelical women in New Zealand today are living in two worlds. The women have a strong sense of identity and faith within evangelicalism however there are contradictions. Simultaneously there is a strong influence of secular liberal society which is evident through the women’s identification with feminist values. What has been discovered is that evangelical women can successfully live in two separate worlds – one secular and one religious. They can be women of faith while at the same time living their lives in a secular society. Similarly there is a significant gap between rhetoric and reality in evangelical women’s lives – what evangelical women articulate regarding gender roles in theory is not necessarily what occurs in practice. These challenges are defined by society and thus are a useful tool to assist in the understanding of the conflicts evangelical women have to negotiate on a daily basis. -

A STUDY OF THE TITUS 2 MANDATE 3 Abstract This thesis seeks to provide an in depth study of the Titus 2 Mandate and explain how the Mandate should be applied to our lives today. An overview of the book of Titus is given, as well as a study on Titus 2. How Titus 2 was modeled through the lives of women in the Bible, as well as how it was exemplified through women in Church history is also explained. It is important for Christian young women to understand their Biblical roles; this thesis seeks to provide clarity and a greater knowledge of what those roles are and how they should be implemented. A STUDY OF THE TITUS 2 MANDATE 4 A Study of the Titus 2 Mandate and How It Has Been Exemplified in the Lives of Women For Christian women living in the twenty-first century, amidst many feminist views, one may wonder, what is their Biblical role and what does the Lord desire of them personally? While the Bible contains many commands that Christ gives his disciples, this study will focus on the Titus 2 mandate. The purpose of this thesis is to study the Titus 2:3-5 passage and research Biblical examples of women who have exemplified the principles found in this passage. The thesis will conclude with how women today can apply this mandate to their own lives. When we become doers of the Word and not hearers only, (James 1:22) we will see transformation in our own life and the lives of others. -

3 Sex and the City: Evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls Jutta Jokiranta The Dead Sea Scrolls (here: the Qumran texts), discovered in the 1940’s and 1950’s from the North-Western shore of the Dead Sea, witness to the importance of the city of Jerusalem and its temple in many ways. These scrolls include both texts composed by the Qum- ran movement1 (active from the 2nd century BCE to the first century CE) and texts reflective of wider Judean religion in the Late Second Temple era. The purpose of this article is to discuss a few passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls that reveal a very special concern for the city of Je- rusalem: they forbid or restrict sexual relations in the city. The Qum- ran movement in general is seen to have been at odds with the Tem- ple establishment in Jerusalem and to have separated itself from the unlawful practices of the Temple priests. Whether or not this led the movement members to completely ban the Temple and its sacrifices is debated.2 In any case, textual sources imply that the movement members were based, travelled, and gathered in several locations (1QS 6:1b‒8a; CD 6:11b‒7:9a; 12:19, 22‒23). Women in Religio-Cultural History: A Reflection on their Representation in Hugo Hinfelaar’s Scholarly Work in Zambia,1960s to 1990s Nelly Mwale and Joseph Chita University of Zambia Although Catholic missionary historians have contributed to the writing of Zambia’s many histories, the attempt at documenting women’s place in religio- cultural history in the country has been overshadowed by the prominence of masculine histories. Using the example of Hugo Hinfelaar who captures women’s histories in his scholarly work, this article explores the representation of the place of women in the religio-cultural history of Zambia in order to highlight Hinfelaar’s contributions to the study of women and to Zambia’s religio-cultural history.
