(August 15, 2016) Roadrunner Records’ group Dream Theater announces the details of its fall North American headline tour. The trek, which begins October 5, will see the pioneering group performing their widely acclaimed double concept album “The Astonishing” in immersive and interactive settings for a unique and unparalleled live experience. Dream Theater is performing at The Hanover Theatre on Tuesday, October 18 at 8 p.m. Consisting of 34 tracks spread across two unique acts, “The Astonishing” debuted atop Billboard’s Rock and Hard Rock album charts, marking the group’s third No. 1 Hard Rock album following “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” and 2013’s self-titled LP. “Even for a group that has blazed new trails consistently, there’s never been anything to compare to ‘The Astonishing’, the full-blown rock-opera, jumbo-size concept album. Det er nettopp musikken etter 22. juli som er temaet for denne oppgaven, og ved hjelp av ulike metoder og detaljerte beskrivelser er formålet å få frem rikdommen av musikk etter terrorangrepet. Den røde tråden er hvordan media brukte musikk, og studien viser at musikk ble en del av den seremonielle fasen av mediebegivenheten 22. juli. Det eksisterte et mediesamspill i denne fasen hvor media (TV, avis, radio og sosiale medier) brukte musikk på ulike måter. Gjennom en analyse av tre av de mest spilte og omtalte låtene etter terrorangrepet (Mitt lille land, Til ungdommen og Tusen tegninger), viser oppgaven at de tre låtene innehar felles karakteristikker som førte til at de ble musikalske minneobjekter. Studien undersøker også hvordan musikk kan brukes ved sorgarbeid, spesielt etter en katastrofe som 22. juli. Oppgaven viser at musikkens funksjon i samfunnet forandret seg i tiden etter terrorangrepet. Fra å fremstå mest som en underholdningsfaktor, viste musikken hvilken viktig betydning og samlende effekt den kan ha. What is this culture of piracy and what is at stake in trying to change it? In this article, I take an ethnographic look at music file-sharing, and compare the situation in the US with Japan, the second largest music market in the world. My findings are based on fieldwork in Tokyo, and surveys and discussions with US college students. By considering the ways social dynamics and cultural orientations guide uses of digital media technology, I argue that a legal and political focus on ‘piracy’ ignores crucial aspects of file-sharing, and is misleading in the assumptions it makes for policy. “The Joshua Tree”--U2 (1987) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Stephen Catanzarite (guest post)* Original album cover Original label The band Across four studio albums, beginning with their 1980 debut, “Boy,” the Irish rock band U2 created a signature sound and built an adoring international fan base, delivering spiritual (and increasingly political) songs and live performances brimming with the irrational exuberance of youth. But it was their fifth studio album, 1987’s “The Joshua Tree,” that cemented the band’s iconic status. The astonishing success of “The Joshua Tree” may, in retrospect, seem to have been inevitable. A critically-acclaimed work that has sold more than 25 million copies, produced two chart-topping singles, and inspired not one but two of the highest-grossing concert tours ever, it’s become ingrained in the popular imagination--particularly in America, the country whose myths, legends, and ideals inspired its creation. Yet, at the time of its release, “The Joshua Tree” bloomed in stark contrast to the pop music landscape that surrounded it. In an era when popular culture gleefully celebrated unabashed materialism and professed a credo of “greed is good,” here was an album that seemed to herald asceticism as ideal. Prof. Dr. Michael Custodis – Institute for Musicology – WWU Münster, Germany – Sept. 2016 Traditions, Inspirations, Contrasts Jordan Rudess’ Explorations for Keyboard and Orchestra The attempt of characterizing Jordan Rudess from a musicological perspective throws light upon his many talents. Legions of fans admire him because of his role as keyboardist in the prog metal-band Dream Theater, which he joined in January 1999; together they have since recorded nine studio albums and toured the world many times. Information about this career of his is readily available on the internet and in specialized magazines. A smaller fan base knows about his varied skills as app developer, designer of instruments, composer, and creative partner of iconic players such as Tony Levin and Steven Wilson. In social networks, which Rudess himself frequents regularly, his fans discuss their idol and his talents to the smallest detail. In doing so they contribute to his fame as an exceptional musician, as which he is known amongst colleagues and in professional circles. Most authors that report on Rudess revert to describing him as wizard or genius and focus their discussions on only one aspect of his talent. But the actual musical necessities that led to the creation of a new song or to the development of a new instrument can hardly be explained without understanding Rudess’ creativity as an entity with different facets. During his instrumental education musical barriers started to fade when the sound revolution of the first Moog synthesizers reached him in the early 1970s as a teenager. He subsequently abandoned the piano virtuoso career which he had started at the age of nine at the New York Juillard School.1 British prog rock-musicians such as Keith Emerson and bands such as Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Yes reverted to classical music for inspiration to elevate rock music onto a new artistic level.

Bis zum Erscheinungsdatum war das neue Dream Theater Album „Distance Over Time“ für Promo- Zwecke lediglich als Stream verfügbar, was natürlich die klangtechnische Beurteilung, sowie die Möglichkeiten das Album auf der heimischen Anlage anzuhören um einiges erschwerte (aber keineswegs verhindern konnte, dass irgendwo im Internet das Album dann doch als illegaler Download herumspukte). Mit ihrem 14. Studioalbum sind die Amerikaner nun bei InsideOut gelandet, womit sich in gewisser Weise der Kreis schließt, da bereits etliches andere aus dem Dream Theater Dunstkreis hier veröffentlicht wurde, wie z.B. Soloalben von Sänger James LaBrie, aber auch Bandprojekte wie Transatlantic, Platypus oder The Jelly Jam. Für die Aufnahmen zum aktuellen Album war man auf der Suche nach einer gemeinschaftlichen „Back-To-Basics“-Herangehensweise, weswegen sich die Band zum ersten mal seit langer Zeit wieder als Gemeinschaft in die Provinz begab. So verbrachte man einige Monate ohne jegliche Ablenkung im abgelegenen Yonderbarn Studio in Monticello, NY, um damit nicht nur das neue Album als Band aufzunehmen, sondern auch um mehr Zeit als kreative, musikalische Einheit beim Schreiben, Aufnehmen, sowie gemeinsamen Freizeitaktivitäten zu verbringen.
