6th Sunday after Pentecost Confirm thy soul in self-control, (Isaiah 45:13). A Meditation on Today’s Gospel Thy liberty in Law! (2 Corinthians 3:17).

O, Beautiful for heroes proved, (2 Chronicles 25:6). In today’s Gospel story, we see that there was a paralytic in In liberating strife, (James 1:25). search of a cure for his paralysis. Who more than self their country loved, (Revelation

12:11). He probably looked for many years for a cure of his And mercy more than life! (Psalm 37:21-31.) ailment. Finally, his friends saw Jesus teaching the crowds America! America! (2 Samuel 7:10). and they picked up the paralytic and placed him in front of May God thy gold refine, (Isaiah 2:7). Jesus. They were hoping that Jesus would cure their 'Til all success be nobleness, (Genesis 48:15-16). friend’s paralysis. But Jesus had something else in mind. And every gain divine. (Deuteronomy 33:13-17.) He said to the paralyzed man: “Take heart man! Your sins are forgiven you.” Following this, Jesus orders the O, Beautiful for patriot dream, (Hebrews 11:9). paralytic to rise and pick up his pallet. The question that That sees beyond the years, (Isaiah 60:21). comes to mind is, why did Jesus wait to cure him? Thine alabaster cities gleam, (Revelation 21:18-20). Undimmed by human tears! (Revelation 7:17.) The reason why Jesus delayed in curing the paralytic man America! America! (1 Chronicles 17:9). is because the cure of spiritual illnesses is much more God shed His on thee, (Acts 4:33). important in the eyes of Jesus than the cure of bodily And crown thy good with brotherhood, (Deuteronomy diseases. In fact, Jesus teaches that the forgiveness of sins 32:13). is a more difficult action to perform than curing bodily From sea to shining sea! (Micah 7:12). diseases. In reflection, we see that it is more important to be concerned with the health of our souls than the welfare of our bodies. The paralytic should have asked Jesus to cure his spiritual problems first. Do we sometimes act like the paralytic? Are we too concerned for our bodies rather than the spiritual health of our souls? Are we aware that we can experience spiritual diseases within?

Finally, let us today be more conscious of our spiritual welfare in our journey through life. For we must remember this simple fact of life: the body will die and corrupt while the soul lives forever. It would be wise to center our desires on the eternal realities instead of temporal things. The eternal life in heaven is the great gift that Jesus is offering to you. The eternal place of torment, or hell, is for those who love the temporal things of the world over the Lord. So let us today start thinking about God and His gift of eternal life.

July 4th Hymn "O, Beautiful" O, Beautiful for spacious skies, (Deuteronomy 33:13). For amber waves of grain, (Deuteronomy 33:16). For purple mountain majesties, (Deuteronomy 33:15). Above the fruitful plain! (Genesis 49:26.) America! America! (Genesis 48:21.) God shed His Grace on thee, (Genesis 48:16). And crown thy good with brotherhood. (Genesis 48:20.) From sea to shining sea! (Ezekiel 47:18-20.)

O, Beautiful for pilgrim feet, (Deuteronomy 33:13). Whose stern, impassioned stress, (Genesis 49:23). Thoroughfare for freedom beat, (Psalms 72:8). Across the wilderness! (Deuteronomy 32:8-11.) America! America! (Genesis 48:21.) God mend thine every flaw, (Genesis 49:22-26).
