E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Putterlickia neglecta, a new species here described and illustrated, is known from South Africa (Mpumalanga and north- eastern KwaZulu-Natal), Swaziland and southern Mozambique. It is considered a near-endemic to the Maputaland Centre of Endemism. Plants grow as a shrub or small tree in savanna and thicket, or in the understory of inland, coastal and dune forests. Vegetatively it superficially resembles P. verrucosa, the species with which it has hitherto most often been confused. Both species have stems with prominently raised lenticels, but P. neglecta differs from P. verrucosa in having sessile to subsessile leaves with mostly entire, revolute leaf margins, flowers borne on pedicels 8–15 mm long, with petals up to 6 mm long and spreading or slightly recurved. Putterlickia verrucosa has leaves with distinct petioles, spinulose-denticulate mar- gins, much smaller flowers borne on pedicels up to 4 mm long, with petals up to 2 mm long and erect or slightly spreading.

Reinstatement of Gymnosporia (Celastraceae): implications for the Flora Malesiana region. Telopea 10(1): 155–167. The reinstatement of the genus Gymnosporia, comprising all the spiny members previously included in the genus Maytenus, has implications for the Flora Malesiana region. An account is given of six species and two varieties in the region (Gymnosporia curtisii, G. diversifolia, G. inermis, G. littoralis, G. nitida, G. spinosa var. spinosa and var. parva). The new combination G. littoralis (Backer) Jordaan is made (based on Gymnosporia montana var. littoralis) and a neotype and lectotype designated for two other taxa. G. emarginata from India and Sri Lanka is also included since this name was previously misapplied to plants in the Flora Malesiana region. Maytenus rapakir is mentioned as probably belonging to Gymnosporia. Maytenus cupularis, which has a racemose inflorescence, is related to the Australian species of Maytenus s. lat. and is retained in Maytenus. Introduction The Celastraceae account for the Flora Malesiana was published by Ding Hou in 1962 and 1964. His genus concepts coincide with those of Exell (1952, 1953), Blakelock (1956), Marais (1960) and Robson (1965, 1966 & 1994) in that he considers Gymnosporia and Maytenus to be congeneric.

Perdue, Jr., Chief ,.. Medicinal Plant Resources ~aboratory Currently, the taxonomy of the Celastraceae is in a state of confusion. A few recent revisions limited mostly ,to political boundaries, have helped to clarify the systematics in a few genera; however, the continued disagreement among generic relationships seems to make it nore difficult for the non-specialist. Because of special efforts to procure plant samples in this family, frequent synonomy has led to confusion as well as duplica- tion, especially in Africa where a number of samples have been received from floristically related countries in which different authorities are recogcized for the Celastracean Flora. This report, primarily, will 'deal with the systematic problems of the African Celasrrtseae. Until recently, the Hippocrateaceae was treated as a separate family from the Celastraceae (Smith, 1940; Loesener, 1942; Wilczek, 1960; Hallee, 1962). L Robson (1965, 1966), Ding Hou (1963, 1964), Blakelock (1958), and Codd (1972) have united the Hippocrateaceae with the Celastraceae; but, their reasons for uniting the two families are not in agreement. The Celastraceae is believed by Codd and Kobson to comprise about 60 to 70 genera, but Ding Hou has indicated that there are about 90 genera. For the purpose of identifying two major complexes, which taxonomists are not in agreement, I will refer to the Celastraceae and Hippocrateaceae as two separate families.

The present work focuses on developing an HPTLC fingerprint ofG. Spinosal eaves and detecting phytochemical constitution of the same using GC-MS. Methanolic extract of the leaves was prepared by maceration. This extract was used to develop a suitable mobile phase for fingerprinting. After mobile phase development involving several pilot TLC, the mobile phase showing distinct spots in TLC was found to be Chloroform: Methanol (9:1). The extract was further subjected to HPTLC fingerprinting where Rf and Area Under Curve were calculated. The extract was also analyzed using GC-MS. HPTLC fingerprinting of the methanolic extract showed five peaks at 254nm and eight peaks at 366nm, whereas GC-MS study structurally identified five phytoconstituents. This work provides simple techniques for the Pharma industry which can be utilized for standardization, quality control and detection of adulteration of Gymnosporia spinosa leaf formulations.
