PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2019 9 Editor’sLetter

The Road to Nowhere t’s been more than six years since my mother left her house on the southwest coast of Florida in the middle of the night, I quietly opened the door of her splotchy black Toyota Corolla, and started a car that, sun-damaged paint aside, had served her well for nearly a decade. It would again on this night and for the next 72-plus hours. Though she backed out of the driveway and pointed the Toyota north, my mom really had no idea where she was going. She had been broadly diagnosed by her primary care physician with “probable dementia,” but my father balked at following up with someone in town more qualifi ed to accurately determine her condition. The psychiatry specialist at a behavioral health center later would clarify that she had advanced Alzheimer’s disease. 800.611.6631 Six years ago, my father wasn’t ready to accept the slow goodbye. He still isn’t. He’s 81, and, despite the fact that he’s had to Baker Act her twice for displays of violence against him (leading to her stays at the behavioral health center), he refuses to consider home-care nursing services, let alone place my now- 76-year-old mother in an assisted living facility. But that’s a long, complicated story for another time. On this night, he simply wanted to fi nd his wife. When he awoke at 5 a.m., and saw the car missing, Dad called the police, then called me. Within a few hours, a Silver Alert had been issued. All we could do was wait. And wait. And wait. One entire day passed. Then, a second day. And then, a third. Our thoughts turned dark. Had she crashed the car? Driven into a lake? Been robbed, beaten and left to die somewhere? At 10:30 a.m. on the fourth day, we fi nally got our answer. A local patrolman had spotted the Toyota in a strip mall parking lot, about 10 minutes from my parents’ house. When the offi cer knocked on the car window, my mom opened the door and paper receipts drifted onto the ground. The dates and places on them showed that Mom had driven from North Port in Sarasota County to Lakeland, some 100 miles away. She’d stopped at a hotel, feasted on fast food, and somehow, miraculously, directed the car back to North Port. Mom didn’t remember where she’d been, how she got there, where she was or where she lived. That’s the last time she ever drove; my father took her car keys that afternoon and hid them. I was reminded of that episode prior to my conversation with actress Kate Mulgrew, who so eloquently captures the insidious nature of Alzheimer’s and its impact on a family as part of her poignant new memoir, How to Forget. Mulgrew’s candor during an interview for the Lifestyle Q&A will resonate with South Florida residents who have experienced, or are dealing with, the complexities of that disease. It certainly struck a chord with me. Enjoy the issue.

PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2019 21 BarTalk Word on the Street A NEW SPEAKEASY IN CORAL GABLES OFFERS THE THRILL OF EXCLUSIVITY here’s a new speakeasy lounge in Tdowntown Coral Gables. But you’ll only fi nd it if you know exactly where to look. The Prohibition-inspired Room 25, located above Seek & Find Kitchen and Bar (2530 Ponce de Leon Blvd.), is accessible via a secret password. Once inside, fi nd a menu of old fashioneds and small bites with live jazz and rotating DJs. Housed in a historic, two-story building from 1925, guests walk up a hidden stairwell adjacent to the restaurant exterior and give the password to the greeter. The space spans an outdoor terrace, an intimate bar and cozy lounge. “The launch of Room 25 fi lls a sophisticated niche for those looking to seek and fi nd an intimate and unique space to unwind in Coral Gables,” says co- owner Kevin Gouchee. Gouchee says the main draw of Room 25’s menu is the extensive list of specialty old fashioneds, a drink widely considered an inspiration for the modern-day cocktail. Here, they include the best-selling RM25, made with Woodford Reserve bourbon, orange bitters and orange zest; the Key, a blend of Irish whiskey, black truffl es and walnut bitters; and the nutty Obstruction, topped off with roasted peanut liqueur and a citrus rim. The menu also includes single malts and whiskeys and craft cocktails. Plates to share include truffl e toast topped with piquillo pepper, bacon, truffl e caviar and white truffl e sauce on ciabatta; guacatones, guacamole topped with chipotle sauce on a fried tostone; and a charcuterie plate of prosciutto, manchego, olives and mixed berry sauce served with crostinis. Those looking to join the club can follow Room 25 on Instagram (@room25miami), where you’ll fi nd the speakeasy’s password of the week. Or, Seek & Find diners can ask a server for the password. “Room 25 is secret, dark and sexy,” co-owner Diana Gouchee says. “It’s really the only true essence of a speakeasy in Coral Gables, tucked away with no signage or indication of its existence. ... It’s a complement to the restaurant, as guests can enjoy a full dinner and then receive the secret code to keep the night going.” —CLARISSA BUCH

OIn fact, the number of species might exceed 30,000. They are found on every continent except Antarctica—in arid regions, mountaintops, swamps and rainforests. Orchids have been some of the most sought-after plants for gardeners. During colonial times, newly discovered orchids in Asia, Africa and the Americas were collected for display in heated glasshouses and conservatories back in Europe. Once in cultivation, superior cultivars were selected and species hybridized, sometimes through several generations, to create new varieties. In South Florida, many can be provided with good growing conditions without specialized climate-controlled indoor environments. We tend to concentrate on epiphytes, or “air plants,” that can be attached to grow in or hang from trees. More tender kinds that need some environmental protection and more sophisticated irrigation are accommodated in shade houses. Terrestrial or ground-dwelling orchids generally are overlooked by local gardeners. Perhaps much of the historical focus has been on space-saving collections for growing indoors in colder climates rather than tropical ground-dwelling species that are not easily accommodated in greenhouses. Maybe the fl owers of epiphytes attract attention when hanging at eye level. Most likely, they are subconsciously considered more conventional, and so less desirable. In South Florida gardens, various ground-dwelling orchids can be spectacular specimens or utilitarian bedding plants, depending on the species. Some need a bit of coddling with their growing medium or moisture and are best displayed in pots. One is easily grown in drier areas and makes a dramatic addition to a succulent garden. At least three mildly weedy terrestrial species have unintentionally escaped into our local environments. The following are some suggestions: • Spathoglottis are the “ground orchids” sold in most garden centers or well-stocked retail nurseries. Their cheery fl owers come in several colors and patterns. They appreciate bright sun, consistent moisture and good drainage. Plant them in beds that contain a mixture of rich composted soil, perhaps with some additional tree bark or mulch. • Phaius, or nun’s orchids, are bold plants with large fl owers that appear in late winter or early spring. Although they always lose their foliage and tend to “disappear” in the fall, they will rapidly grow with heat and longer days. Bright light and slight drying between waterings is best. Plant them in an organic mix with much-added bark or mulch. • Arundina, or “bamboo” orchids, are tall plants that aren’t easy to fi nd locally. Growing up to 8 feet with a strong resemblance to thin-stemmed bamboo, their recognizably orchid-looking fl owers open one at a time at the tops of the plants. It’s best to tie or stake several of their stems together to prevent them from fl opping. They like much sun, consistent moisture and similar soil mixtures to the others mentioned above. Harvey Bernstein is the horticulturist at Pinecrest Gardens.

Music to Your Ears SOOTHING, RESEARCH-DRIVEN SOUNDS ELEVATE A NEW THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT AT ACQUALINA SPA BY ESPA BY KEVIN KAMINSKI

42 AUGUST 2019 | PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM Where: Acqualina Spa by ESPA (17875 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach)

The treatment: Sound Care Ritual

The lowdown: In its ongoing effort to stimulate all the senses as part of its ever-expanding menu, Acqualina Spa has unveiled a music-enhanced treatment that incorporates Sound Care, a French-based application with science behind it. Neuroscience researchers have demonstrated that Sound Care technology can help with every- thing from managing pain and stress to alleviat- ing sleep issues. For Acqualina’s purposes, the application provides a calming complement to an 80-minute treatment that begins with a foot massage and transitions into a tension-relieving aromatherapy massage. Before the room lights dim, your spa therapist discusses your music preferences—the original compositions span virtually every imaginable interest (classical, light rock, new age, reggae, instrument-specifi c melodies and more). Custom headphones are then placed over the ears. At once, the music works in union with the massage technique to further quiet the mind and relax the body. It’s a simple yet potent sensory marriage that heightens the overall experience in ways the recipient doesn’t even realize. “Sound Care original musical compositions follow a specifi c pattern called the ‘U’ sequence, which slows down breathing patterns, and cardiac and brain activities,” Acqualina spa director Cath- erine Davalle says. “By combining the therapeutic powers of Sound Care music and massage, we can now offer guests a one-of-a-kind wellness experience that no other spa currently is offering in the U.S.”

Price: $250

Other spa highlights: The fi rst U.S. spa branded by ESPA, the renowned skin-care company that emphasizes natural ingredients and a holistic ap- proach, Acqualina Spa provides a 20,000-square- foot, two-story sanctuary for its guests. Patrons have access to a variety of amenities, including an outdoor spa pool, crystal steam rooms, ice foun- tains and Himalayan salt walls. Among the popular treatments at Acqualina are two that cover nearly two hours: the Orange Blossom (with an ESPA salt and oil scrub, herbal poultice pressure point massage, scalp massage and orange blossom tea); and the head-to-toe Balancing Massage (facial cleanse, body exfoliation, scalp massage and body massage with hot volcanic stones). There also are daylong “spa journeys” that include a poolside lunch. Last year, Acqualina debuted an 820-square-foot Royal Spa Suite with a private steam room, a rainforest shower for two, and its own lounge.

She wants to correct a misconception about the more-than- three-year journey that resulted in her recently released book, How to Forget: A Daughter’s Memoir. In it, the native of Dubuque, Iowa, refl ects on a two-year period more than a decade ago during which she returned home for the fi nal days of her cancer- stricken father, Tom, and for a long and heart-wrenching goodbye to her mother, Joan, who died in 2006 of Alzheimer’s disease. Along the way, Mulgrew writes candidly and eloquently about the joys, frustrations and complexities of her relationships with both parents, creating a narrative that’s fi lled with deep examination, startling revelations and great affection. But, as the 64-year-old mother of three notes, the process that resulted in her second memoir (following Born With Teeth in 2015) was anything but cathartic. “It’s not therapeutic to write about your parents’ deaths and their lives,” says Mulgrew, who fans of “Star Trek” recall as the franchise’s fi rst female captain in a leading role (Kathryn Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager” from 1995 to 2001). “It’s an excavation. PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2019 55 EVAN GOLDMAN REALTOR/ASSOCIATE, GOLDMAN RESIDENTIAL GROUP RE/MAX ADVANCE REALTY

HIS BACK STORY: The University of Virginia graduate earned his degree in foreign aff airs and Spanish. Aft er working in the nonprofi t sector, as well as for larger for-profi t companies, Goldman decided to pursue real estate. Fortunately, he couldn’t have found a bett er mentor. “The main reason I got into the business and came back to Miami was to team up with my mother and business partner, Hazel Goldman,” Evan says of Pinecrest-based Goldman Residenti al Group. “She’s a real pioneer of residenti al real estate in South Florida. My mom taught me almost everything I know about this business, including what it takes to succeed at the highest level.”

TREND WATCH: “Mediterranean-style homes are on the decline, while glass and all-white classic or contemporary design is more desirable. The more updated and fully fi nished a house is, the faster it’s selling—and the more money it’s fetching. Coconut Grove remains very hot, and Pinecrest and Palmett o Bay are sti ll ideal places for families who want the best local public schools for their children.”

MYTH BUSTING: “People tend to think it’s easy to start a career in real estate. But it takes incredible commitment, drive, and understanding of people and the local market. Plus, much of the work is driven by clients’ schedules, and their wants and needs. It takes a long ti me to culti vate a loyal referral network of people who trust you and your experti se. It defi nitely does not happen overnight.”

SALE OF A LIFETIME: “My favorite transacti on was defi nitely when I sold Dwyane Wade’s house in north Pinecrest. I’ve always been a huge Miami Heat fan—and, of course, a huge D-Wade fan. … The transacti on was challenging, mainly because this was in 2009-2010, aft er the market had fully crashed. But we did an excellent job for Dwyane and his family. I fi nally got to meet him to sign the contract; he couldn’t have been nicer or more appreciati ve of our work and care of his situati on.”

56 AUGUST 2019 | PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM CHRISTINE STIPHANY CERTIFIED RESIDENTIAL SPECIALIST BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOMESERVICES/ EWM REALTY

HER BACK STORY: Sti phany was working in the loan department at The Bank of Coral Gables when she received an unsolicited piece of advice from a customer named Ron Shuffi eld. He had opened a real estate fi rm and suggested that Sti phany earn her license. “Aft er having two girls, I took Ron’s advice; in 1997, I joined EWM’s offi ce in Coral Gables,” Sti phany says. “I couldn’t have asked for a bett er mentor.” Her career with EWM has spanned 22 years (and a branding change). Though conti nuing educati on never ends in residenti al real estate, Sti phany oft en fi nds that she relies more on the practi cal knowledge, negoti ati ng talent and contacts she’s developed. “The [skills and insights] I’ve gained from the sales I’ve closed is oft en the diff erence,” she says. “There’s no substi tute for experience.”

TREND WATCH: “Buyers sti ll like the open-fl oor concept with a contemporary design, high ceilings and ample closet space. Communiti es located within walking distance of business districts, restaurants, shopping and workplaces also are highly sought aft er, parti cularly by millennials. The real estate market in South Florida is hot—and getti ng hott er. SALT ‘refugees’ (those ti red of paying state and local taxes they can no longer deduct from federal income tax) are moving here from other parts of the country and driving up prices.”

SALE OF A LIFETIME: “Years ago, I showed a client a few condos on the water with boat docks; she was looking to buy for her son. She purchased one in Coral Gables for $300,000 and paid cash. The buyer’s daughter, who worked at a mortgage company, came with her boss to preview the condos. During the process, we became good friends, and I started assisti ng them with their own real estate transacti ons. Over the next few years, I helped these folks sell over $10 million in real estate.”

WORDS OF WISDOM: “Selling and purchasing a residence is oft en a very personal, and occasionally emoti onal, experience. I tell my clients that, as much as possible, it’s important for them to look at the transacti on as strictly business. Buyers are looking at a house that you’ve poured your heart and soul into— and they’re seeing all the things they want to change. The challenge is to fi nd the middle ground; I try to tailor my advice accordingly.”

PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COMPINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST | JULY 2019 57 MEGAN PROBST BROKER ASSOCIATE THE HOWLAND GROUP, COMPASS FLORIDA

HER BACK STORY: The nati ve of Jamaica and daughter of a developer was immersed in the world of constructi on sites from a young age. But it wasn’t unti l she helped her sister purchase a condominium in Miami Beach that the graduate of the University of Central Florida (she earned her degree in interpersonal organizati onal communicati on) found a passion for real estate. “I was immediately intrigued by the agent’s unique ability to connect a client with the lifestyle and home that fi t their needs,” she says. As part of the Howland Group at Compass, Probst specializes in residenti al and mixed- use real estate for renters, investors and buyers. She’s also in her second year on the leadership board for the Miami Associati on of Realtors. “Having worked in various [capaciti es]—bouti que brokerage, new development sales, nati onwide brokerage—I have a well-rounded skill set that allows me to see the industry holisti cally.”

TREND WATCH: “I’m seeing buyers who are relocati ng to South Florida from a more densely populated city. This buyer tends to be accustomed to a more walkable and transit-oriented city and is looking to replicate that same lifestyle. For these reasons, he or she is typically drawn to the downtown off erings of both Fort Lauderdale and Miami. … Also, there are empty-nesters transiti oning from larger homes in the suburbs. [Some are looking] for a more acti ve social life near the downtown hub; others are trading in square footage for more amenity-rich communiti es. … In terms of locati on, beachfront condos [with luxury ameniti es], high rises in the heart of downtown, and single- family homes near the downtown corridor are hot markets.”

MYTH BUSTING: “I think we are fi nally past the sti gma that South Florida is [a seasonal] place of residence. Top corporati ons are moving their headquarters here, and there is an infl ux of business professionals across industries att racted to [the tri-county area]. The hospitality, real estate, tourism, import/export, and culinary scenes are expanding each quarter.”

WORDS OF WISDOM: “Hire a professional who is service-oriented, not discount-oriented. Your relati onship with a real estate adviser should start well in advance of the ti me you are ready to purchase. Sti ck to your goals and work with a professional who will help you achieve them.” 58 AUGUST 2019 | PINECRESTMAGAZINE.COM Time4251 N Federalto Hwy.,Ring Boca Raton / 561.353.3278 in Happiness! / www.diamondseast.com NOT AN AUTHORIZED ROLEX OR AUDEMARS PIGUET DEALER. Back in those early days, entertainment was part of the allure—A- listers Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr. and Liza Minnelli all played the hotel, and Arthur Godfrey taped his radio show there.
