WLC Responds to Growth and Challenges This year Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) worked diligently to address the ever-growing demand for work-based learning opportunities, as well as creating innovative service delivery solutions to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last eight years, WLC has seen job shadow requests increase by over 56%, with almost 3,500 job shadow requests coming through this school year alone. Internship requests have grown by 90% over that same time period, and the number of students involved in career events has grown by 26%. The WLC team, in collaboration with our community partners, pivoted to deliver new options and solutions in FY20 to meet that growing demand for work-based learning and create new virtual platforms to connect our students, educators and business community; wherever learning is happening. WLC expanded program offerings, created libraries of virtual resources, communicated in new ways with students, educators, business partners and parents. We found new ways to work together virtually, productively and with great perseverance.

School year 2020-2021 will mark Workplace Learning Connection’s twenty-third year of intermediary service delivery to our region. WLC will be ready to do what we do best, convene the best program partners, connect educators and students to meaningful career exploration experiences, measure the impact of the work, and sustain high quality work-based learning for the years to come. We thank you sincerely for your support of our mission: Connecting Today’s Students to Tomorrow’s Careers!

“The job shadow really helped me see what type of mentality to have in the workplace, and what type of character businesses are looking for. I learned a lot about how technology is used in graphic design, photography and videography, and internet marketing.” − Jordan Andrews, Student – Vinton-Shellsburg High School

“I love my job as a Real Estate agent so talking with young adults excited to hear about my career was fun. It’s awesome that Workplace Learning Connection is giving these young adults the opportunity to get an inside look at careers they’re interested in!” − Annie Kaestner, Real Estate Agent – Kaestner Real Estate Team

“It's fun to just let them (students) know what's out there and get them interested. You've got to start now because you have to be ready once you get done as it's very competitive, especially with veterinary medicine to get into a program, so if you know ahead of time I think it's great.” − Dr. Kim Vercande – Best Friends Veterinary Care

“Vinton-Shellsburg and Workplace Learning have partnered for many years as we work towards common goals of supporting our students so they are prepared for their futures AND that we continue to have a workforce in Iowa that can meet the many and diverse needs of the businesses, non-profits and other employers who serve Iowa. The experiences that WLC provide our students allow our students to see what is available in Benton County and the corridor.” − Mary Jo Hainstock, Superintendent – Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District 2 CEDAR COUNTY 6 Schools

“My favorite part of my internship experience was getting to work with many different people and seeing what it was like to work in a clinic “behind the scenes.” I also enjoyed working with all the different and really pinpointing what animals I enjoy working with. Time spent at my internships benefited me, I started to learn skills and terms that are used around the clinic and I could see myself going to college for a career in this field. After my internship, I was hired at the clinic, working after school where I clean and assist doing various tasks. It has changed my future, I was told that I will have a job waiting for me when I graduate college.” − Mariah Behrens, Student – North Cedar High School

“I really enjoyed interacting with the high school students from Cedar County. They were engaged in the conversation, showed enthusiasm and are our future! The Career Fair was extremely organized and I enjoyed it! I can’t wait for next year!” − Linda Beck, Development Director – City of Tipton

“Workplace Learning Connection has given many North Cedar students an opportunity to explore and develop skill sets that are necessary in today's workforce. In a rural community, this is a great resource that allows our students to network with business partners while exploring potential skills.” − Holly Hosch, Guidance Counselor (7-12) – North Cedar Community School District

“The highlight from my internship was meeting new people in the community I live in. You may think you know everyone in a town, but the continuation of networking is very important. At my internship my host, Victoria, was amazing! Many people know her in the community because of her job. She gave me pointers on how it is important to be social and always meet someone wherever you go. With event planning, you may need someone who specializes in music, art, technology, etc. to help you out down the road at an event. She encouraged me to break out of my shell and talk to people when I was being shy. Getting out of my comfort zone helped me understand I need to get more comfortable starting conversations if I want to go down this career path.” − K.. Jones, Student – Williamsburg High School

“The enthusiasm of the students was impressive! They asked very good questions and seemed very interested in my career as a Lab Technician. The students were interactive with questions and comments regarding current events.” − Dee Fry, Medical Lab Technician – Compass Memorial Healthcare

“As we work to build deeper partnerships with local business and industry and provide kids with really great experiences, we know that workplace experience, whether that be for career exploration or career preparation, is a really powerful tool. Through job fairs, workplace tours, and facilitated internships and job shadows, we're connecting employers with potential future members of their workforce. That's a great opportunity for students to learn, and a great opportunity for employers to share what their workplace is like and what their workforce needs to be good at. And for our kids, families, and local employers, that's a "win-win.” − Chad Garber, Ed.D. – Williamsburg Community School District 4 JOHNSON COUNTY 18 Schools

“With college decisions approaching quickly, Workplace Learning Connection allowed me to explore the health science field. My internship gave me valuable information on what collegiate majors I could pursue in addition to hands on experience with clientele. I strongly recommend Workplace Learning Connection to any high school student that wants to narrow their future career path before college.” − Ashley Stinocher, Student – Solon High School

“Workplace Learning Connection is important to Johnson County Ambulance Service because it helps expose and educate youth, with a hands on approach, to what we do as Paramedics. WLC allows youth interested in a medical field to have a look into the real world of Paramedicine and not just what they see on TV. WLC could spark an interest and get youth interested in joining EMS as a lifelong career!” − Amanda Voss-Grumish, Field Supervisor – Johnson County Ambulance Service

“WLC is important to the Coralville Police Department because of the connections we are able to make with students. These relationships and experiences excite people about the law enforcement field and can lead to us hiring good local people! We love getting to meet new students all the time at WLC events!” − Kyle Nicholson, Community Relations Officer – Coralville Police Department

“As our students start to think about life after high school and their career choices, one of the best ways for them to truly understand their options is to get out into the world of work through job shadowing and internships. Our business and industry partners that create these opportunities for our students are investing in the future. We encourage those not hosting our students at this time to consider how you can introduce them to your field of work.” − Steve Murley, Superintendent - Iowa City Community School District

“Each year, we have our Junior class take part in a mock interview through WLC. Most of them walk into the interview very nervous, but walk out with more confidence in themselves and their abilities. They all agree they were glad to go through this important experience. It gets them closer to being ready for the "real world.” − Lynne Zoulek, 7-12 School Counselor - Regina Junior/Senior High School

“My job shadow experience helped show me how concepts we have learned in school are expressed in the workplace. This job shadow also showed me real-life projects researchers and doctors are attempting to accomplish now, and how they can use that work in real life. This job shadow was very valuable to me because it gave me an idea of some of the skills needed to work in the field of genetics.” − Tristan Weers, Student – Anamosa High School

“Job Shadowing provides an excellent opportunity for students to explore and inquire about a variety of potential future career paths. Being able to tour a job site with a highly experienced host further enhances the total experience.” − Barry A. Brown, Pilot - Monticello Aviation

“This experience (mock interviews) was an awesome opportunity for our students to grow in skills and confidence. It was wonderful to see them go in nervous and come out relaxed and confident. Putting students in an uncomfortable setting that is controlled and safe allows them to have so much personal growth. Thanks for setting this up!” − Debra Brokaw, Counselor – Midland High School

“I have always struggled with what I want to be until now, debating on medical or law practice. Going to this shadow (Attorney Day), they talked a LOT about the importance of my favorite thing; writing. And that’s what had me hooked. No matter which field I decide to go through with, I know that I will have had these amazing opportunities to find myself and decide my path. I learned things from potential school subjects to take, types of law practiced such as private practice, and the types of court systems. This was all very interesting and I’m thankful to have been granted the opportunity to attend.” – Ella Heder, Student – Jefferson High School

“I fell in love with my internship. It really helped me solidify what I want to do after my secondary education. I was able to shadow nurse practitioners and doctors from various departments in the hospital and find distinctions between different departments. I made many valuable connections, and I even stay in contact with some to this day. They love to teach and are great resources!” – Jonah Albrecht, Student, Linn-Mar High School

“I thoroughly enjoyed my internship experience through WLC and was able to see and do so many things I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. Working with animals has always been a passion of mine and interning at Ross Veterinary Clinic definitely helped me solidify my future plans to become a Veterinarian. I was fortunate enough to get hired after my internship, so I continue to work in an environment where I see myself later in life.” – Kay Mundy, Student – Marion High School

“Providing internships through Workplace Learning Connection has been a great experience. You get to introduce the future of the workforce to your company and industry. Every time you teach others you have the opportunity to learn and build your own understanding.” – David Clark, P.E. – West Plains Engineering

“This (Mount Vernon Middle School Speaker Day) was such a valuable experience for both me and the students. I was able to share my passion with young people, and they were able to learn about the career opportunities in the creative field that they might not know exist. It was so inspiring to see the kids excited about art and asking thoughtful questions about my career.” – Megan Anderson, Owner – Megan Lynn Creative

“No one does it better than Workplace Learning Connection when it comes to career exploration! From job shadows to resume-worthy internships, WLC works tirelessly to match students with real-world experiences.” – Cara Joens, Admissions & College Coordinator – Xavier High School

“My internship was the best decision I have ever made! It taught me that I would like to go into Cosmetology and has made me more aware of what I need to do to successfully get there. I would recommend an internship to anyone, because it’s an experience worth going for. Even if you don’t want to go into the career after you did the internship at least you tried the job out.” – Reaghan Aggson, Student – Mid-Prairie High School

“With a limited pool of talent to hire from, sponsoring events for students like the tour of the Washington YMCA is to our potential benefit by exposing young people to careers in areas where the company is looking to hire, and getting the company’s name out in front of those potential employees.” – Chris Smith, Vice President of Construction – Carl A. Nelson & Company

“Partnering with WLC has been an incredibly rewarding experience for Washington County Hospital and Clinics (WCHC) and me personally. With a small amount of effort, we’re able to positively affect our youth which will benefit our community for years to come. WCHC began partnering with the Workplace Learning Connection program seven years ago and will continue to support this program as it is a great tool for the youth of today to learn more about how the skills they learn today are applicable to their future employment and the immense career opportunities available to them.” – Amy Vetter, Foundation and Marketing Director - Washington County Hospital and Clinics

“Kirkwood provides students with a convenient place to learn skills that help them find work right after graduation and knowledge that will help them succeed in college.” 11 – Matt Flotteud, Athletic Trainer – Jet Physical Therapy – Washington “Hiawatha Engineering department has had a great experience hosting Workplace Learning Connection interns. It has been a pleasure to meet these students and introduce them to the life of a city engineer. They have always been eager to participate and learn how we tackle our daily tasks. We always receive a nice note from each student at the conclusion of our time together highlighting their experience and thanking us for the time we spent with them. We thank the Workplace Learning Center for providing this opportunity.” – John Bender, PE – Hiawatha City Engineer

“My favorite thing about my internship was learning how to do new things and meeting new people, I enjoyed learning about how the career of finance helps the city. I got to learn many things that will help me in the future, I also sharpened basic skills such as memorization and working efficiently. I really enjoyed working with money and finance. I would like to further my knowledge in finance and working with people." – Camryn Ray, Student – Kennedy High School (Internship with City of Hiawatha)

“One of my favorite things I did during my internship was sitting with the residents and talking to them! At the beginning of my internship I didn’t think I wanted to be a nurse, but by the end I realized that it was something I really wanted to pursue! Right after my internship, I signed up for Kirkwood’s CNA Academy and it has been amazing!” – Kaitlyn Jones, Student – Iowa City High School (Internship with Oaknoll Retirement Residence)

“My favorite part of my internship at National Advanced Driving Simulator was to be able to work with real research data and how my code could process raw data from simulators to readable spreadsheets. The internship was a very different learning environment than a high school classroom. Not only was I able to learn a new , I was also able to apply it right away. I learned how to communicate with other people at the workplace, regardless whether I knew them or not, while sharpening critical thinking and problem-solving skills. My internship helped to solidify my future plans as a software engineer, as well as nudged me towards research and data management. This was my first internship experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I am very excited for the many future internships I plan to undertake.” 27% – Timothy Cui, Student – Iowa City West High School (Internship with National Advanced Driving Simulator) of interns are offered additional opportunities or employment by their business host post-internship
