2006 marks the year that the take the first step towards building their best team in the franchise history. What better way then to make the first game in the new, sold out stadium a 21-13 win over last years World Champs, the Steelers. The pre-season game was led from start to finish by Arizona and all indications are that this is the year for Big Red. The building was full, the streets were backed up for miles in all directions causing about a third of the fans to get to their seats after the kick off. Once inside, the fans spent as much time wandering around the facility as they did watching the game. Who could blame them? The stadium is a shopping mall with a football theme and for the shoppers Christmas came early. For the vendors, well, let’s just say that running out of product was a good feeling.

On the field, and his offense set the stage for what promises to be one of the most exciting scoring teams in the NFL this year. We all know about and . But the third receiver in that set is and for the defenses the Cards face this season he will become known as the one that gets away each week, for first downs and . Throw in on the ground and the NFL’s most versatile fullback, Obafemi Ayanbadejo, tight ends Adam Bergen and Leonard Pope and the road to the NFC West title clearly runs through Glendale in 2006. Scoffers, step off. Get over yourselves. Stop being haters and get behind the team that can make NFL history at many different levels.

The defense was already on the rise last year and now it will have an ally on offense that will enable it to finish the season in the top five in NFL scoring defenses. The ringleader of this group of gridiron grifters will be the baddest boy on the block, safety Adrian Wilson. He has 10 in five seasons but the stat that stands out is his 2005 NFL record setting 8 sacks for a . Helping make it ugly for the other team’s passers will be the tenacious and aggressive corners and David Macklin and safety Robert Griffith. Line backing will be setting the Pace with former defensive lineman moving into the kill zone. This is a man that was knocking people into next week when he had two and three and blockers targeting him. Pity the fool that gets through the line thinking he dodged a bullet only to wake up on Wednesday at the ICU with 97 tattooed on his chest.

Wait, there is more! Middle backer James Darling has buddies like Orlando Huff, , and Darryl Blackstock to help murderize running backs and brave tight ends that don’t understand the danger, yet. In the trenches Bertrand Berry, Chike Okeafor, Kendrick Clancy, and the Deathstar himself, Darnell Dockett will be redirecting traffic and otherwise negating the opposition’s efforts. The stats from the Steelers game are simple, and yes, spare me the lecture of “It was just a pre-season game.” I get that. But with 8-12 caliber players on this year’s team, you have to choose to hate to stay negative on this team. Don’t even go to the garbage about the “team not filling the needs on the offensive line.” Did you miss the part about the “scoring defense,” if so, then just remember this, turnovers equal short fields and short offensive drives which equals rested, happy “O” linemen.

Last year Warner had to force the ball and Boldin and Fitzgerald had to make big plays every game all year. Everyone in the league knew this. This season Warner and the offense will have their pick of the play selection and the defenses will have to man up on more than one Cardinal and hope they guessed right. Oh yeah, the offensive line. Let’s start at the top with Leonard Davis; a man that can ruin another mans life in a matter of seconds. He will become on of the NFL’s best. Then you have , Alex Stepanovich, Milford Brown, Deuce Lutui, Jeremy Bridges, Fred Wakefield and injured Oliver Ross. Give these guys 30-40 yard drives after turnovers and they are going to be making reservations for their trip with “Edge” to this seasons Pro Bowl.

The Scoring for Arizona came on two passes from Warner. One for five yards to Bryant Johnson as he was lined up inside a twin’s right set with Boldin on the outside. Another to Obafemi Ayanbadejo for 15 yards that was capped by a dramatic dive into the pylon in the Northeast corner of the . What made this play so nice was the one handed grab to keep the drive alive by Bryant Johnson for a huge, crowd lifting first down. Diamond Ferri ran one in from five yards out. The beauty of this fourth quarter run into the Southwest end zone was not how he went up and over to score, but how the Steelers corner Deshea Townsend got clowned by Diamond. Townsend came up to make a big hit and instead ended up looking for his helmet as it rolled up the field.

Lest we forget, the last score was set up when the Cards Gerald Hayes made his third quarter . Earlier in the game Ernest Shazor made a great move to get inside a Steeler for an interception that was nullified by a Cards penalty. But the move to get in position was big league stuff. Other players that had notable performances on special teams were kicker Nick Novak and Fred Capshaw. Plus safeties Jack Brewer and Aaron Francisco were getting it done on kick coverage. At this point there is no way to tell how the running back spots will fill out. JJ Arrington and should be the front-runners but Damien Anderson and Diamond Ferri are on par with the others. Could get interesting. If you want to find out about the Steelers scoring and high lights, well, go the their media. We don’t do the other guy.

After the game Coach Green was actually relaxed and said that he got to play everybody and that was a plus. Yes, he said, they need more running plays but James was only in for five so they did not get to work on that as much as he would like with his main group. He mentioned the fine efforts by Diamond Ferri, Aaron Francisco and Bryant Johnson. He also said that most of the free agents performed well. He was pleased with the offensive line. He also pointed out that Gerald Hayes played a lot, for two full quarters and the Shazor looked good and would be fine. He thought Calvin Pace looked solid and that he saw what he wanted. John Navarre played two and a half quarters and he was good with what he saw from him.

Kurt Warner spoke and was pleased though he would have liked to get James more touches. He was thrilled with Bryant Johnson’s performance and remarked “what a blessing to have a third receiver with his ability.” The full house was exciting, coming out of the tunnel onto the field he could see the yellow Pitt towels, but he could not hear them. What a feeling, he is glad this is his football home. He said the entire team has been unselfish and they trust each other.

On the Front cover. The big man himself, Leonard Davis is due to have a Pro Bowl season as he leads his linemates and the offense to victory. On the Back cover. Leonard Davis Leads the Way!

In 2001 Michael Vick of Atlanta was the big man in the NFL draft going number one. Leonard Davis was the true big man of that draft being picked second, right behind Vick. Yep, big news for the big time player from the Texas Longhorns. Until the 2004 season he was a guard. Now of course, he plays left tackle and has started in all 75 games he appeared in for the Cardinals.

During his rookie season he started all 16 games and was part of a line that allowed the second fewest in a 16 game season since 1978 when Dan Dierdorf played. He started his Texas career as a defensive tackle but finished his last two years playing left tackle for the Longhorns.

He came from a town with a population of just over 1,000 and his high school had fewer than 150. His family was large with 21 half brothers and sisters and his older half brother played in the NFL for the Steelers and Cardinals plus the USFL. He understands the value of family and giving back. He is a donor and a spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation. He and his family give many hours of time and much money to their events. He also has mentored teenagers from the Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona.

Clearly, this man has a big heart. But what the team needs this season is for him to become their big leader. He will be the anchor on a team that could easily win the NFC West and go deep into the playoffs this season.

I spoke with him after the win over the Steelers. He said this about the stadium and crowd; “It was exciting to go out and play in front of this home crowd.” “Even after people started leaving with the game in hand we had more people in the stands then most games last year. I am glad that they are here to support us.” “I just want to go out and win games, the linemen as a group, our mentality is different and we are really taking ownership and that is going to be key.”

I mentioned that running back James plans on a pro bowl year and that he would be a big part of that, the point man, he said; “That’s all good, but we got to win the games first, the Pro Bowl can’t get us to the playoffs.” From the press box it is clear that the road to the playoffs is being paved by a very good offensive line. Running point for that line is one big man. Leonard Davis. www.sandenews.com To God be the Glory! Test your Quote-Q Ohl becomes eighth cowboy to cross $2 million 1. Walt Disney Pictures Presents Mark Wahlberg in INVINCIBLE In theatres August 25

Comments from movie fans at the preview showing: Better than Rocky because it was real! Makes me want to believe I can do great things! FUN! Even my wife enjoyed it and she hates football!!!! Take the whole family! Amazing! It’s a hit! It’s not about football, it’s about life! I’ll be back!

Reviewed by Dana Lynn: The movie is good… it is take your family to see it good. One viewer described it as a “feel good movie”, but for the players that watched it was more than that. I was able to attend a special screening of Invincible with two fanatic rival football teams and their families. These players are adults that continue to play for the sheer love of the game, and their families that support and cheer them on, and they saw themselves on that screen. I’m not sure what I enjoyed the most, watching the movie, or listening to the players and their families enjoy the movie.

There is a game in the rain and mud that every player there remembered playing, and their laughter and reactions were hilarious. The silence was just as loud as you watched “Papale” attempt what he knew was an impossible dream, and you knew that every person there identified with their own impossible dream. At the end they did feel so good they burst into spontaneous applause. Afterward, it was interesting to see! the “rival” teams standing around talking and laughing with each other about the movie, and their own games.

You do not have to be a football fan to love this movie. It speaks to anyone who has had life throw them a curve. Or you’ve been told that “you’ll never amount to anything, you’ll never make any money, and you’ll never make a name for yourself’. If any of that sounds familiar, then you need to see this movie.

On my way home I realized that I had a silly grin on my face just thinking about the movie. I called my husband who is a football fanatic, and a dreamer of the impossible, and told him that we are definitely going to go see this movie when it comes out. I know he will enjoy it, and I will enjoy watching him as he does.

Disney Preview: From the studio that brought you “The Rookie” and “Remember the Giants” comes INVINCIBLE, inspired by the true story of Vince Papale (MARK WAHLBERG), a man with nothing to lose who ignored the staggering odds and made his dream come true. When the coach (GREG KINNEAR) of Papale’s beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time—no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papal — a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan’s fantasy – moving from the cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional player. and owner of the Coyotes. in Coyotes Give Prescott and Verde Valley Something to Howl About! The Verde Valley Coyotes are in the recruiting stage for their second Arizona Football League season. The Coyotes inaugural season started with more staff than players at their first practice. Instead of being discouraged at the low numbers, owner Scott Laughery knuckled down and worked at getting word out about the team that he believed could be built from this group of small towns. At their first scrimmage with the Chandler Cowboys, they had about fifteen players on their sideline, against the Cowboys forty-five. The field at Sunnyside Park was surrounded by trucks and cars full of people coming out to see what this team was all about. The Cowboys came to work on their game, and left respecting the small group of guys that came to play and brought it to them. The respect must have spread through those watching because the players started coming out to play.

The Coyotes finished their season with over forty players from the Verde Valley, Tri-City area. Their regular season ended with a 5-5 record, and they won their Division, and placed second in the Sonoran Conference.

Coach Laughery was an official in the AIA for 15 years and has friends at every level of the game. When his daughter Holly and her husband Tim Miller approached him with a couple other friends about starting a team, he immediately jumped on board. They started a team to play football, and found that it turned into an extended family. Holly co-owns the team with Scott, Tim is in charge of Player Personnel, and his wife Nancy is in charge of finances. They stress sportsmanship and giving back to the community.

The Coyotes even have a father-son duo on the team. Kevin Soulages and his son Cody played with the Coyotes last season and will both be returning this year. Kevin has been involved with Youth Football in the Tri-City league for the last four years. He served as a head coach, as assistant coach, a defensive line coach, and offensive line coach. He also volunteers in the YMCA Youth Flag Football League that is partially sponsored by the Arizona Cardinals.

Head Coach and owner Scott Laughery is excited about the upcoming season. Ninety percent of last years players are returning, but there is plenty of room for new players in all positions. He has secured Sedona Red Rock High School as their home field for the games that begin in January. Half of the games will be in Sedona and half in Phoenix.

He has also added to the Coyote coaching staff for the upcoming season. After watching his son Damien play a year with the Coyotes, Jason Wirth enjoyed the team so much he volunteered as the coach. Jason has coached youth sports since he was 18. He coached high school football for four years, ice hockey for 13 years, and played the QB position, as did all his brothers, while in the military. Richard Herrera will be the Defensive coach for the Coyotes, and they are adding a line coach and offensive coordinator. ROADRUNNERS SIGN AFFILIATION WITH PHOENIX COYOTES

The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL have signed a one-year affiliation agreement with the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League for the 2006-07 season.

“We’re very excited to reach this agreement with the Phoenix Coyotes,” said RoadRunners President and former Coyotes forward Claude Lemieux. “They are an organization that has always shown a strong dedication to excellence, and we feel that their goals parallel ours. Plus, with the convenience of being located in the same city, Phoenix hockey fans will now enjoy the pleasure of seeing both the NHL stars of today and tomorrow.”

The RoadRunners will work closely with both the Coyotes and the Rampage in player development. “Today we’ve taken a very positive step in the right direction,” said RoadRunners COO and General Manager Ray Delia. “The Phoenix Coyotes are committed to creating organizational depth, and the RoadRunners are pleased to be able to assist them in achieving that goal.”

As part of the agreement, the RoadRunners will be afforded a select number of training camp spots that will allow players to compete on the Coyotes’ rookie team at the September rookie tournament in Los Angeles and San Antonio’s training camp in October, and should receive both AHL and NHL prospects over the course of the season. “We look forward to working with the RoadRunners, and see benefits to both organizations from this new relationship,” said Barnett.
