I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. Interview with Tim Vigon, creator of world famous Made Of Paper fanzine (15/08/2014)! ! ! ! ! ! First things first how are you?! ! All good my friend. Thanks for asking!! ! ! Can you talk us through your up bringing?! ! My upbringing was pretty normal, I was brought up in Macclesfield which is about 20 miles South of Manchester, my parents were teachers and I went to a normal comprehensive school in Macc, when I was 16 I went to 6th form college in Moss Side, Manchester and that kind of opened up the world to me in a big way. Macclesfield is a small town , even though it’s close to Manchester people couldn’t be more different. It was totally different for me when I started hanging around with people who lived in a real City, it was 1987 when I started going to college in Manchester, so an amazing time to be there! ! ! ! ! What was the first music you got into?! ! Like most people it was just through whatever I could find of my mum and dads. They had a BASF 90 cassette (yep i’m that old) of the Beatles live at Hollywood Bowl with Sgt Peppers and Let It Be on the same tape. I played that tape to death. I’m still obsessed with the Beatles. I have a little doll of one of the Beatles on every door handle in my house and lots of bits and pieces of Beatles memorabilia. I just went to see Paul McCartney this weekend in LA. That was the first music I listened to and I’ve never got bored of it. -

Yet, there were hardly – to say at least – any researches concerning popular music bands of siblings and their music. In the 1990s, Oasis was the best-selling band in Britain. TheGallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, who led Oasis, epitomized the era of Britpop. It was a musical and cultural movement that was based on "returning to Englishness", and produced attractive and highly commercial rock music by indie bands. A crucial part of Oasis' success depended on the brothers' relationship. The siblings competed for leadership, control and attention. Their rivalry turned the media obsessed with the band. Journalistic historians of Britpop, Oasis' biographers and academics, have related to the 1990s, the Britpop movement, the band's well- publicized rivalry with Blur, the new post-Thatcherism euphoria, and the rise of Tony Blair and the New Labour, as all part of Oasis Phenomenon. However, I'd like to I understand Oasis' successful music from a different perspective, from a psychological point of view: as a product of the dysfunctional family syndrome, and especially the idea of brothers in a family and a musical unity. -

Middleton Is Firmly Rooted Between Rochdale, Oldham and Manchester
Middleton is firmly rooted between Rochdale, Oldham and Manchester. Middletown. Originally a typical Lancashire cotton town, the horizon dotted with tall mill chimneys. The 1950s & 60s brought a huge influx of people from the Manchester slum clearances on to the newly built Langley estate and this had a big bearing on the number of young people now living in Middleton. These young people in the 50s/60s had money to spend on fashion and music and it was against this background that the beat boom, already happening in Liverpool and Manchester, began taking shape in Middleton. Groups of young lads and some lasses headed down to Manchester’s music shops for guitars & drums and the occasional saxophone to form beat combos. Youth clubs and coffee bars became the places where these groups had their first taste of fame before moving on to the clubs of Manchester surrounding towns and the many dance halls of that period. For such a small town it was amazing that four local groups became so successful that they could become full time musicians and were given recording contracts by major London record companies:- The Country Gentlemen, signed to DECCA; TD Backus & The Powerhouse also on DECCA; The Measles on COLUMBIA and Ivans Meads on PARLOPHONE. Middleton’s musical heritage continued through the 70s and then in the 80s post punk band The Chameleons hit the headlines. The 80s brought The Mock Turtles, at the forefront of the Madchester Indie movement. Other notables in the music and entertainment sphere to emanate out of Middleton are Steve Coogan, John Richmond, Clint Boon of Inspiral Carpets, Maartin Allcock of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull, Brendan and Martin Coogan.
