4 Welcome note

Dear Colleagues

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the International Conference “From Adolescence to Adulthood. Normality and Psychopathology” which will be held in Larnaca, Cyprus, from 9 to 12 of September 2010. Both continuities and discontinuities of psychiatric disorders from childhood and adolescence to adulthood offer a fi eld for investigation by Child and Adult Psychiatry. Early onset and prodromal phases of psychiatric disorders constitute an important part of the inquiry. The above conditions warrant the collaboration between Child and Adult Psychiatrists and the Conference offers an opportunity for a productive dialogue between them. Within our continuously changing world there is an increasing pressure on the individual arising from the social and family environment. This pressure is especially intense during the transitional phases of development, such as the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Furthermore, pressure shapes and complicates the psychopathology of certain conditions, offering many challenges to the clinicians of mental health. Delayed intervention or lack of comprehensive intervention at such critical periods can lead to poor personality development and poor psychosocial outcome throughout life. It is our hope that the Conference can take a step in meeting the above challenges. The Conference is organized by the Cyprus Psychiatric Association with the collaboration of the WPA Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and of WPA Section of Preventive Psychiatry and is co-sponsored by WPA, ESCAP, World Federation of Mental Health, PAEEB, ISAAP, Hellenic Psychiatric Association and Hellenic Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The conference is also supported by the Minister of Health of Cyprus the Director of Mental Health Services, the Cyprus Medical Association, AEPEA, the Cyprus Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Cyprus Paediatric Society, the Psychological Associations of Cyprus, the Cyprus Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, the Cyprus Society of Family Therapy, the Cyprus Society for Integrative Psychotherapy, the Cyprus Federation of Mental Health, the Cyprus Association of Occupational Therapists and organizations of nurses, social workers and other mental health professionals. The participation of distinguished scientists from different countries all over the world ensures a productive dialogue and exchange of knowledge. Special training seminars will be organized during the Conference for young psychiatrists and young scientists with the cooperation of the forum of young Psychiatrists of WPA and the PAEEB.

Dear guests

Cyprus is located at the crossroads of many different civilizations that conquered the island and infl uenced its development during the 3.000 and more years of history. Larnaca once the main port of the island is one of the main seaside touristic destinations of Cyprus noted for its interesting old city, with its medieval castle, remarkable churches and interesting museums. The Conference will be held at a major seaside hotel. The social program of the Conference offers an opportunity to become acquainted with Cyprus culture of the past and present and to enjoy Larnaca’s beautiful beaches. I would also like to thank H.E the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofi as who has placed the Conference under his Patronage, and all those who have collaborated and cosponsored the Conference. I would like to cordially invite you to join us in Larnaca, Cyprus in September 2010.
