Full Coverage of Subaru Rally Team USA Is Available on the Subaru Motorsports App Higgins and Drew Dominate with Seventh Oregon Trail Rally Win in the Past Eight Years Cherry Hill, N.J., April 13, 2018: Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew continued their dominance of the Oregon Trail Rally, winning the 2018 edition of the event for the seventh time in the last eight years at the wheel of their Vermont SportsCar- prepared 2018 Subaru WRX STI rally car. The Oregon Trail Rally, regarded as one of the most scenic and challenging rallies in the USA represented round one of the 2018 American Rally Association series. It was the perfect start to Higgins and Drew’s 2018 driver’s championship campaign as the duo attempt to earn their seventh championship together while driving for Subaru. “I’m happy to get the win and it was great to be back in my Subaru again,” explained Higgins at the podium. “Today was a proper Sunday drive just trying to manage our lead! We stayed clear of any problems and our Subaru STI was perfect. This rally is a joy to drive, it has a little bit of everything and the fans are fantastic.” The win was Higgins’ seventh in the past eight years, and his ninth career Oregon win from ten starts. “After 8 months off we were worried about getting back into a rhythm after so long, but the whole weekend has gone perfectly to plan,” said co-driver Craig Drew. “It’s a perfect start to our 2018 campaign and hopefully we can get the crown back this year.” An expected tight battle with the other Subaru team car of former Subaru World Rally Team star driver Chris Atkinson and his veteran co-driver Stephane Prevot was short lived after a mechanical issue sidelined Atkinson for a portion of Saturday’s stages. Atkinson would return for Sunday’s stages and although he was out of the running for an overall result Atkinson went fastest on six of eight stages while also growing more comfortable with his Subaru in what was his USA rally debut. Atkinson has been competing in Rallycross for Subaru for the past two years but had yet to compete in a stage rally event. Higgins and Drew began the rally on a charge, going fastest on three of the first four stages at the fan friendly mix-surfaced stages at Portland International Raceway. With teammate Atkinson just seconds behind them they could not afford to let up on the second day’s action, however once Atkinson was sidelined with a mechanical issue Higgins and Drew found themselves with over a 30 second lead to the closest challenger. From there Higgins slowly increased his lead without taking big risks as his rivals all lost some time with vehicle issues. It was a textbook victory for Higgins and Drew as their race-craft coupled with their on-demand outright speed proved yet again the formula for victory. Subaru Rally Team USA will stay in the Pacific Northwest for next month’s legendary Olympus Rally, May 19-20 based around Olympia Washington. After spending 2016 focusing on testing and development, the team debuted recently signed factory drivers Chris Atkinson and Patrik Sandell along with two completely new 2018 Subaru WRX STI Supercars at the Red Bull GRC season opener. The team showed improved pace with a commanding heat victory for Chris Atkinson and a pair of 2nd place heat finishes for Patrik Sandell before the duo were stymied from a good result in the Final. Chris Atkinson, a former Subaru World Rally Team driver with over 70 WRC starts in his career including 41 WRC stage wins and six podiums, had a challenging start to the event. In Heat 1A Atkinson was bumped while taking the GRC’s signature dirt jump, causing damage to his Subaru and slowing him to a 3rd place finish. He bounced back in the next race however, and dominated Heat2-A, leading from the start after an impressive launch and pulling away unchallenged to win by nearly 3 seconds. Atkinson was hit with bad luck in the Final after an electrical fault slowed his pace, although he closed in on fifth place he was later forced to retire from the Final, but was classified eighth overall. “The team has moved a good step forward; we won that heat early on and we’ve shown some good pace,” explained Atkinson.

The roads in and around Idaho City proved to be some of the narrowest and most technical rally stages ever run in the ARA championship, providing a big challenge for the drivers. "We weren't the fastest here this weekend, but I'll take the win however I can get it." Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino set a blazing pace at the start, but lost more than 20 seconds to a spin early Saturday afternoon, then had a flat tire. They were unable to make up for lost time in the final stages of the day and finished in second-place overall. "It's extremely frustrating," said Block at the finish. "I put myself in the right position to win and it didn't work out for us." Even so, the result moves Block into second place in the championship, behind teammate Pastrana. Canadians Antoine L'Estage and co-driver Nathalie Richard were also in the running for a win early in this event, but they lost time to a power steering failure in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Saturday afternoon and finished in third.

Rally Sweden will be the second event for the New Generation i20 WRC and a second different surface. We have tested on snow back in December and again last week with the new car and it’s gone well with no major issues. The drivers have been happy too; they’ve found good set-ups for the differential and the dampers so I think they are all quite confident. Thierry finished second in Sweden last year in the 2015 car but the drivers say that the New Generation i20 WRC feels even better. The car is a bit longer so it should be more stable on fast sections of road like you get in Sweden. We believe we have gained a bit of traction too, which is important on a low-grip surface like snow. In Sweden the car runs on gravel specification but there are specific details you can prepare for this event. You don’t want to get too much snow in the car because it adds extra weight so you have to make sure it is well sealed, inside the wheel arches and underneath the car. Also, because of the cold temperatures we don’t have to cool down the car as much as usual so we’ll use a different radiator.
