Problem One of Prachuabkirikhan’s main tourist attarction is the beautiful bay located at the southern part of Thailand. Despite having the lowest rainfalls in Thailand, the shoreline has been severely eroded by the strong sea wave from the Gulf of Thailand. Large cracks were observed on the mian road networks along the shoreline since 2006. Some parts of the road embankment have started to show slip circle failure. Approximately 500m length of the most critical road section was identified by the client which needed immediate attention. The proposed structure must be able to withstand marine condition (salt water environment) and severe atmospheric condition.

Before construction Date: March 2007 Solution Maccaferri was approched by the client to provide the most suitable solution to prevent further deterioration of the shoreline. After careful studies, a 4m high gravity wall using Maccaferri PVC coated gabion and 12m length scour apron using Maccaferri PVC coated Reno Mattress was proposed. It is a simple and durable structure where the gravity wall acts as embankment support and the Reno Mattress and filter fabric at the back of the Reno Mattress prevents erosion. Maccaferri follow a strict specification in order to guarantee for long lasting of the structure against marine and salt water environment and the ageing action of ultraviolet rays and heat. Conrete steps were constructed on top of the gabion box to facilitate beach- goers to get to the beach.

Problem OCEANA GOLD Philippines — a reputable mining company, is constructing a 24 kilometer access road to the mining site at Didipio Nueva Vizcaya Philippines. Prior to the construction of the access roads, series of mountains needed to be cut.

Results of the mountain cut sections were slope that were un- protected that were prone to failure cause by soil erosion.

Solution The solution proposed by Philippine Gabions Inc. (PGI), In- fratex Philippines Inc. (IPI), and agreed by the OCEANA GOLD Philippines to use Soil Erosion Control ENKAMAT 7018 for slopes that are above 5 meter vertical height with a slope of equal or greater than 45 degrees on the vertical. . ENKAMAT 7018 is a proven, lightweight, flexible alternative to Before Construction Date : April 2007 rigid concrete, asphalt and stone riprap systems for controlling BEFORE CONSTRUCTION erosion. . It is designed to help nature develop strong vegeta- CONSTRUCTION tion for permanent erosion protection of slopes, rivers, banks, ditches, channels, spillways, landfills, shorelines, and other vulnerable erosion-prone areas.

Problem The management of Le Orchid Villas planned to build luxury villas at the foot of hilly forest near the famous Patong beach in Phuket. The location of the proposed villas is very close to hill side which requires the existing hill to be trimmed to almost 60 degree inclination. The slope was cut approximately 22m in height and 120m length to make way for the construction of the villas. The global stability of the slope is not the main concern to the client because the bare slope consist of mainly granite rock, but the slope is exposed to surface erosion if it is not protected immediately. Shotcreting the surface is not an options because the cient was also looking for green finish which will look more pleasent and blends with the sorrounding environment.

Before construction Date: July 2006 Solution Maccaferri proposed Enkamat 7018, a three-dimensional permanent erosion control mat. It is made of thick polyamide filament with 90% void for soil filling. Enkamat was a prefered choice because of the follwoing advantages:

1.0 Green finishing 2.0 Permeable material 3.0 Economical solution 4.0 Permanent solution 5.0 Simple installation method with minimum supervision 6.0 Guaranteed quality of the material
