CASE HISTORY Rev: 00, Issue Data 05.11.2008 SOUTHERN TRANSPORT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT SEETHAWAKA INSDURIAL PARK, AVISSAWELLA, SRI LANKA ENVIRONMENTAL/ GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING/ BASAL REINFORCEMENT Product: MacGrid Problem Southern Transport Development Project (STDP) is Sri Lanka’s first major expressway project with a length of 126km stretching from Colombo to Matara. Part of the project at section JBIC from Dodangoda to Kurundugahahetekma which is under the care of Taisei Corporation, one of the leading construction company from Japan requires construction of embankment over soft foundation soil for a construction period of 130 days. The height of the embakmnet varies from 4m to 10.5m. Soil investigation further shows that the embankment is to be constructed in an acidic environment. Preliminary design analysis shows that the foundation soil could not support the embankment without treatment at the base of the embankment. Solution Maccaferri proposed MacGrid WG 15 and WG 20, a high strength geogrid with a tensile strength of 150kN/m2 and 200kN/m2 respectively. The geogrid is made from high Before construction Date: Aug 2007 moleculer weight, high tenacity polyester multifilament yarns. The yarns are protected with a polimeric coating making it suitable for acidic soil. The client accepted MacGrid based on the following criteria: 1.0 Low Creep with High Long Terrm Design Strength 2.0 Low Installation Reduction Factor 3.0 Low Durability Reduction Factor 4.0 High Short term Stress Strain Characterictic 5.0 High Pollout Resisitance 6.0 Guaranteed Product Quality During construction Date: Apr 2008 Client name: ROAD DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY SRI LANKA Main contractor name: TAISEI CORPORATION, JAPAN Consultant: PACIFIC CONSULTANTS INTERNATIONAL, JAPAN Product used: 382,069 SQUARE METER - WG 20 238,772 SQUARE METER - WG 15 Construction info Construction date: APRIL 2008 Construction end: PRESENT During construction Date: May 2008 Project section Date: Feb 2001 Date: Feb 2001 Maccaferri Asia Unit 511, Block G, Phileo Damansara 1, 46350 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia Tel : ( + 60 ) 3 7957 8330—Fax ( + 60 ) 3 7957 9080 E-mail: [email protected] - Web site: www.maccaferri.com CASE HISTORY Rev: 00, Issue Data 01.11.2008 PRACHUABKIRIKHAN BAY RENOVATION KUIBURI DISTRICT, PRACHUABKIRIKHAN PROVINCE, THAILAND ENVIROMENTAL /HYDRAULIC & EROSION CONTROL /SLOPE PROTECTION/ Product: PVC Gabion & PVC Reno Mattress Problem One of Prachuabkirikhan’s main tourist attarction is the beautiful bay located at the southern part of Thailand. Despite having the lowest rainfalls in Thailand, the shoreline has been severely eroded by the strong sea wave from the Gulf of Thailand. Large cracks were observed on the mian road networks along the shoreline since 2006. Some parts of the road embankment have started to show slip circle failure. Approximately 500m length of the most critical road section was identified by the client which needed immediate attention. The proposed structure must be able to withstand marine condition (salt water environment) and severe atmospheric condition. Before construction Date: March 2007 Solution Maccaferri was approched by the client to provide the most suitable solution to prevent further deterioration of the shoreline. After careful studies, a 4m high gravity wall using Maccaferri PVC coated gabion and 12m length scour apron using Maccaferri PVC coated Reno Mattress was proposed. It is a simple and durable structure where the gravity wall acts as embankment support and the Reno Mattress and filter fabric at the back of the Reno Mattress prevents erosion. Maccaferri follow a strict specification in order to guarantee for long lasting of the structure against marine and salt water environment and the ageing action of ultraviolet rays and heat. Conrete steps were constructed on top of the gabion box to facilitate beach- goers to get to the beach. The main attraction of the golf course includes man made ponds located beside the fairway. A durable retaining wall is required to support the embankment and at the same time the structure must be flexible so that the retaining wall can be constructed as per the proposed aligment of the pond. The structure must also be able to withstand aquatic environment for a long period of time. The most important criteria is that the final look of the completed structure must be pleasant looking and blend with the surrounding landscape. Before construction Date: April 2008 Solution After considering all the options, finally the client had accepted Maccaferri Gabion Retaining Wall ias the best solution. Not only the gravity wall constructed using gabions are economical and easy to install, it also fulfill all other conditions set by the client. A 2m high wall was constructed around the pond using 2 x 1 x 1 gabion box. The galmac coated wire mesh was proposed to give additional life span to the gabion box in aquatic condition. The other advantage of gabion retaining wall besides aesthetic look is that in some condition, green facing is possible when vegetation starts to grow through the apperature of the wire mesh. The curve of the river causes severe erosion at the river embankment. As water flows, the curve of the river increases with time due to the hydraulic action. The client was looking for a solution to protect the river bank using locally available material to reduce the cost. A durable structure is required considering the velocity of the river at that location and at the same time the structure must be flexible to accomodate the curve of the channel. Solution Maccaferri proposal of using combination of gabion and reno mattress as erosion protection system was accepted by the client because rocks which are locally available can be used. The design was done by marine department with assistance After construction Date: Aug 2008 from Maccaferri technical team. The structure consist of 4m width Galmac coated Reno Mattress which will be installed at the slope at an angle of 1V:1.5H. The structure also includes 2m height Galmac coated gabion at the toe of the reno mattress as toe protection against scouring. Total length of 300m was improved using this method. Galmac coated wire mesh was proposed to give additional life span to the gabion box in aquatic condition. Strong current from the river could cause severe damage to the bridge if it is not protected properly. The bridge abutment which is located at the river bank must be protected from erosion. The surrounding area at the bottom of the bridge pillar must also be protected to prevent under ground scouring. Before construction Date: Oct 2007 Solution The Department of Rural Road (DRR) with the assistance from Maccaferri technical team came up with erosion protection system using Maccaferri gabion and reno mattress. The combination of Maccaferri reno mattress and Maccaferri non woven geotextile was installed at the bridge abutment and also along the river bank as erosion protection. Gabion was installed at
