Research and Topic Forums 11 I am proud to announce that three of our faculty will receive prestigious AGA awards: Dr. John Carethers will receive the AGA Distinguished Mentor Award, Symposia 15 Dr. Hari Conjeevaram, the AGA Distinguished Educator Award, and Dr. Juanita AGA and ASGE Postgraduate Courses Merchant, the Distinguished Achievement Award in Basic Science. Dr. Shrinivas Breakfast with the Expert, Poster Tours 17 Bishu will receive the 2017 AGA–Pfizer Pilot Research Award in Inflammatory Daily Schedule 18 Bowel Disease. We are also very proud of the many division faculty serving in leadership roles to organize this year’s DDW program. Dr. Grace Elta continues to Poster Sessions 24 serve as the chair of the AGA Council. Her committee is responsible for organizing Index 30 all the programming for DDW. At the section level, Dr. John Kao is the vice chair of the Esophageal, Gastric, and Duodenal Disorders Section; Dr. Joel Rubenstein DDW 2017 Receptions chairs the Clinical Practice Section; Dr. Linda Samuelson is the vice chair of the Cellular & Molecular Gastroenterology Section; and Dr. John Wiley is the vice chair UM GI & Hepatology Alumni Reception of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section. Saturday, May 6 The Division again has a strong showing at DDW, reflected in the number 6:30 – 10:00 PM of presentations by our faculty and fellows. We have 59 platform presentations Camelot Room, 3rd floor – notably, presentations at a Distinguished Abstract Plenary and the Presidential InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile Plenary and 5 state-of-the-art lectures – and 64 posters. Sunday, May 7 6:15 PM • reception 7:30 PM • dinner and program Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel Spring 2017 The GI Digest 1 Past, Present and Future Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Michigan Past, Present and Future of Innovation, Clinical Practice and Leadership In September 2016, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Division. As part of that celebration the Division held a two-day symposium, “GI and Hepatology at the University of Michigan: Past, Present and Future of Innovation, Clinical Practice and Leadership.” Faculty, fellows, alumni, U-M leadership and friends of the Division were invited to attend. The Thursday program, moderated by Drs. Chung Owyang and William D. Chey, included Dr. John Carethers, followed by leaders in gastroenterology and hepatology from across the nation, including Drs. Tachi Yamada, Rick Boland and David Lieberman. Distinguished alumni speakers included Drs. Ezra Burstein, Joseph Elmunzer, Michael Kochman, Uri Ladabaum, John Inadomi and Michael Lucey. The Friday program, moderated by Dr. Juanita Merchant, showcased the achievements of some of our own U-M faculty, including Drs. Anna Lok, Liz Speliotes, John Allen, John Wiley, Peter Higgins, William Chey, Hari Conjeevaram, Thomas Wang, Jason Spence and Nobu Kamada. Mary Petrovich, a philanthropist and friend of the Division, was also on hand to give her personal reflection on patient care and the future of innovation. On Friday, Medicine Grand Rounds was presented by a special guest, Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Symposium was followed by a dinner at the beautiful University of Michigan Museum of Art. After a reception, which showcased a five-panel work of art by Bill Burgard that was commissioned for the event, Chung Owyang welcomed guests and introduced Dr. Joel Howell who led guests along an interesting journey of the history of the University and the Division. A video produced just for the occasion was shown, after which Dr. Chey introduced remarks by Drs. James Woolliscroft, Tachi Yamada and Daniel Podolsky. The final toast of the night was given by John Carethers who announced the establishment of the Chung Owyang, MD, Professorship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This endowed chair is intended to support future chiefs of the U-M Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and will ensure that Dr. Owyang’s legacy of dedication will live on at the University of Michigan in perpetuity. The history of the Division, from the modest beginning in the 1940s, to the tailgate and football game attended by guests of the 75th Anniversary Celebration, has been artfully captured in a 184-page book, “Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future: 75 Years of Discovery, Innovation and Care”. 2 The GI Digest Spring 2017 DDW 2017 Awards and Recognition We are proud to announce the following award recipient from the University of Michigan Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology who will be recognized at DDW 2017. John M. Carethers, MD, AGAF Distinguished Mentor award American Gastroenterological Association AGA is proud to honor John M. Carethers, MD, AGAF with a Distinguished Mentor Award, which recognizes individuals who have made lifelong efforts dedicated to the mentoring of trainees in the field of gastroenterology and for achievements as outstanding mentors throughout their careers. Dr. Carethers' continuous dedication to achieving excellence, his mentorship of GI fellows, postdoctoral fellows, medical students (both in clinical education and in medical research), and undergraduate students, and his rigorous, yet highly supportive style make him deserving of this award. He has an infectious enthusiasm for research and scholarly work and for the field of gastroenterology at large. Dr. Carethers is the John G. Searle Professor and Chair, Department of Internal Medicine and Professor of Human Genetics at Michigan Medicine. He oversees more than 820 faculty, 310 trainees and 1,700 staff. He is a trained gastroenterologist and physician–scientist who focuses his research on colon cancer genetics. He has served as a role model and mentor to GI-focused scientists and clinicians worldwide, and has mentored 56 trainees at all academic levels, with 17 currently holding faculty positions. Among his many mentoring/teaching awards are the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Department of Medicine Graduating House Staff Teaching Award (1999) and the UCSD Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Mentoring Excellence (2006). Numerous additional honors include membership to the National Academy of Medicine (2012), American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (2015), and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2016). An AGA member for over 25 years, Dr. Carethers has contributed tremendously to the organization. He has served on the Underrepresented Minorities Committee and Research Policy Committee, and as vice chair and chair of the AGA Institute Council Gastrointestinal Oncology Section, as well as chair of the section’s nominating committee. He served as a senior associate editor for Gastroenterology, and served as the program chair and as an invited speaker for numerous AGA meetings. In 2016, he received the AGA Institute Gastrointestinal Oncology Section Research Mentor Award. From 2015 to 2016, he served as a mentor for the inaugural class of the AGA Future Leaders Program and as a mentor for the AGA Investing in the Future Student Research Fellowship. Dr. Carethers serves as chair of the Minorities in Cancer Research Council of the American Association for Cancer Research, and is a councilor and soon to be president-elect of the American Association of Physicians. He completed a two-year appointment on the National Commission for Digestive Diseases. Dr. Carethers is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, and the National Academy of Medicine. He has published more than 160 manuscript articles and book chapters that focus on colorectal cancer. Dr. Carethers received his MD with high distinction from Wayne State University. He completed
