Nacer Bouhanni, vainqueur de l’édition 2016, sera le dernier à avoir inscrit son nom au palmarès aux côtés de Bernard Hinault, Tom Boonen, Miguel Indurain, Marcel Kittel et tant d’autres, car l’histoire s’arrête ici. La réforme territoriale de Janvier 2015 a sonné la fusion des régions Picardie et Nord - Pas-de-Calais. Volonté politique du nouvel exécutif régional et véritable outil de communication, le potentiel Tour des Hauts-de-France devait, à l’instar des deux anciennes régions, naître de la fusion, en 2017, de deux courses cyclistes : les Quatre Jours de Dunkerque et le Tour de Picardie. Après différents temps de travail, la création d’une nouvelle structure mutualisant, tant les membres que les compétences des deux organisations, apparaissait comme la meilleure perspective. Présidées par la Région, les discussions ont malheureusement échoué, notamment en raison d'une flagrante iniquité de traitement entre les acteurs des deux ex-régions, en défaveur de la Picardie. La nouvelle structure ne verra donc jamais le jour. Ces nombreux désaccords nous ont donc amenés à tenter une refonte du Tour de Picardie afin qu’une course à étapes subsiste en Picardie ; malgré notre immense volonté - et de nombreuses idées - nous avons constaté qu’il était impossible d’adapter le Tour de Picardie au risque de le dénaturer, mais aussi, par manque de moyens (la Région étant le partenaire financier majeur de l’épreuve ; les Quatre Jours de Dunkerque, quant à eux, étant largement soutenus par la ville de Dunkerque et sa Communauté Urbaine).
