CHAPTER VI THE WORKSHOP In an earlier study of the Fish Mosaic of Palestrina and a series of fish mosaics from Pompeii I concluded on the basis of important similarities in iconography, style and technique, that all were probably made by one workshop. A number of other mosaics could also be ascribed to the same workshop, including the Nile Mosaic of Palestrina, the mosaics from the Casa del Fauno at Pompeii, and several other mosaics from Pompeii and around the Bay of Naples. The workshop has been named the Workshop of the Casa del Fauno because this house possessed the largest collec tion of the workshop's products so far discovered, and because it was these mosaics which allowed a reconstruction of the work shop's activity1• A short review of the workshop's activity may help to shed some light on the background of the Palestrina mosaics. The Casa del Fauno is the best preserved example of a mansion belonging to a provincial aristocrat from the later part of the second century B.C. This was a period of enormous prosperity both in Central Italy and in Pompeii, owing to the development of trade with the Eastern Mediterranean which followed the Roman conquest. The finding of a fragment of a travertine slab with an Oscan inscription mentioning a Satrius, named as an aedile, sug gests that the Casa del Fauno may have belonged to the Satrii, who were a prominent Campanian family. It seems probable that the aedile Satrius was involved in the general architectural embel lishment of Pompeii which took place in the later part of the second century, as well as in the enlargement and embellish ment of the Casa del Fauno. -

It is therefore a question of developing an "ecosystem" made up of hospitality, services, products, experiences, a “unicum” in which the global market can express great interest, increasingly adding to the paradigms of the past the new ones made possible by digitization. -

Paul Collins (Ed.), Renewal and Resistance Journal of the Society
Paul Collins (ed.), Renewal and Resistance PAUL COLLINS (ED.), RENEWAL AND RESISTANCE: CATHOLIC CHURCH MUSIC FROM THE 1850S TO VATICAN II (Bern: Peter Lang, 2010). ISBN 978-3-03911-381-1, vii+283pp, €52.50. In Renewal and Resistance: Catholic Church Music from the 1850s to Vatican II Paul Collins has assembled an impressive and informative collection of essays. Thomas Day, in the foreword, offers a summation of them in two ways. First, he suggests that they ‘could be read as a collection of facts’ that reveal a continuing cycle in the Church: ‘action followed by reaction’ (1). From this viewpoint, he contextualizes them, demonstrating how collectively they reveal an ongoing process in the Church in which ‘(1) a type of liturgical music becomes widely accepted; (2) there is a reaction to the perceived in- adequacies in this music, which is then altered or replaced by an improvement ... The improvement, after first encountering resistance, becomes widely accepted, and even- tually there is a reaction to its perceived inadequacies—and on the cycle goes’ (1). Second, he notes that they ‘pick up this recurring pattern at the point in history where Roman Catholicism reacted to the Enlightenment’ (3). He further contextualizes them, revealing how the pattern of action and reaction—or renewal and resistance—explored in this particular volume is strongly influenced by the Enlightenment, an attempt to look to the power of reason as a more beneficial guide for humanity than the authority of religion and perceived traditions (4). As the Enlightenment -

Is Bach Best? | Gramophone.Co.Uk
Is Bach best? Was Bach a genius? Or simply a superb technical craftsman? Simon Heighes tries to pin down Bach's genius with a little help from some friends On one thing most musicians are generally agreed: Bach was probably the greatest of all. Explaining his elusive genius, though, is not so easy. Asked why, in Dylan Thomas's words, 'Bach is best', even seasoned professionals find themselves struggling. 'It's impossible,' says Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. 'His music is the language of the soul, so we can never fully understand him.' Soprano Nancy Argenta is prepared to have a go, though. 'The key to Bach is the spiritual dimension. He was further along the line of godliness than most of us. For me, Bach is a seer, a wise man, a beacon along the path.' For conductor Helmuth Rilling — who has recorded more music by Bach than most — his genius had a more earthly foundation. 'He was the great consolidator, summing up the best of what had gone before, refining the best ideas of his own time.' The true extent of Bach's genius, Rilling believes, is only now becoming apparent. It's not enough, he says, simply to look at Bach's own work alone. 'He's the teacher par excellence. His music has influenced every later generation of composers and musicians — a heritage that continues right up to our own time. My friend Krzysztof Penderecki told me that without Bach he would never have written his own St Luke Passion.' Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt marvels at the way Bach's music still sounds so fresh and vital. -
