No. 3 seeded Longwood went 5-1 in its first-ever Big South Tourna- ment, surviving five consecutive elimination games, to win the title. 2013 (5-1) The squad dropped its first-round game against No. 6 Liberty Uni- Liberty 5, Longwood 3 versity, 5-3, on May 9. The Flames broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh with a home run and a RBI single, and the Lancers were Longwood 4, Gardner-Webb 2 unable to get the runs back in their final at-bat. Longwood moved Longwood 8, Charleston Southern 2 on to face No. 7 Gardner-Webb University and No. 9 Charleston Southern University in elimination games on May 10. Sophomore Longwood 5, Campbell 1 Megan Baltzell hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the Longwood 8, Campbell 6 seventh to earn a 4-2 victory for the Lancers, eliminating Gardner- Webb. Against Charleston Southern, Longwood pulled ahead with Longwood 10, Winthrop 2 a two-RBI double from sophomore Kori Nishitomi and later sealed the 8-2 decision with a five-run rally in the sixth. Longwood then advanced to the semifinal round on May 11 against No. 2 Campbell. BIG SOUTH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM The Lancers led 3-1 after three innings and added one more run in each of the last two innings, thanks to another home run from Baltzell and a CU error, to take the 5-1 decision and force the “if necessary” game to determine who would advance to the title 2013 game. Campbell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Libby Morris, P, Longwood (MVP) Longwood was aided by three home runs and five RBI from fresh- Brooke Short, UTL, Longwood man Emily Murphy to secure the 8-6 victory and championship berth. The Lancers jumped ahead early in the championship game Kori Nishitomi, OF, Longwood against Winthrop on May 12, taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the Megan Baltzell, C, Longwood third on a two-run home run by sophomore Chelsea Sciacca. Long- wood doubled its margin in the fourth with back-to-back homers from senior Brooke Short and Sciacca. Winthrop extended the game by half an inning with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Nishitomi sent a double to left to score two and secure the 10- 2 mercy-rule victory for the Lancers.
