The research presented in this thesis was carried out at the National Institute for Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) under the supervision of Senior Researcher Ole Ritzau Eigaard, Senior Consultant Grete Elisabeth Dinesen (both Section for Ecosystem Based Marine Management), and Professor Jens Kjerulf Petersen (Danish Shellfish Centre). An external research stay was undertaken at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), in association with the University of Tromsø (Norway), hosted by UNIS Adjunct Professor Paul Renaud. Funding for this PhD project was provided by the European Marine Fisheries Fund, the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food, and DTU Aqua, through the projects “Udvikling af bæredygtig forvaltning af følsomme habitater og arter i Kattegat” and “Påvirkning af økosystemkomponenten bundfauna i N2000 områder ved fiskeri med skrabende redskaber”. E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The evolution of the molluscan biota in Sabaudia Lake (Italy, central Tyrrhenian Sea) in the last century is hereby traced on the basis of bibliography, museum type materials, and field samplings carried out from April 2009 to Sep- tember 2011. Biological assessments revealed clearly distinct phases, elucidating the definitive shift of this human-induced coastal lake from a freshwater to a marine-influenced lagoon ecosystem. Records of marine subfossil taxa suggest that previous accommodations to these environmental features have already occurred in the past, in agreement with historical evidence. Faunal and ecological insights are offered for its current malacofauna, and special emphasis is given to alien spe- cies. This relationship is highlighted, here, considering a set of forty, rather common species of clams collected from French coasts. Interestingly, this negative covariance has two (geometrically related) consequences on the pattern of variation of shell shape at the inter-specific level: (i) An extended range of variation of shell elongation ‘E’ is made compatible with. (ii) A severely restricted range of variation of the ventral convexity ‘K’ of the shell contour. I suggest that: (i) The extended range of interspecific variation of the shell elongation ‘E’ results from a trend towards larger differentiation between species according to this functionally important parameter E, while, in contrast, (ii) The strongly restricted range of variation of the ventral convexity ‘K’ of the shell contour might arguably result from a common need for improved shell resistance, face to mechanical solicitations from the environment, either biotic or abiotic.

Many people were involved in this journey, but key characters are three. Luca Marini, director of “Secche di Tor Paterno” Marine Protected Area, shared the project idea of field research on molluscs and trusted me in accomplishing the task. Without his active support in finding funds for the field activities this project would have not started. It is no exaggeration saying I would not have even thought of entering the PhD without him. Bruno Sabelli, my PhD advisor, is another person who trusted me above reasonable expectations. Witness of my childhood love for shells, he has become witness of my metamorphosis to a researcher. Last, but not least, Manuela, my wife, shared my objectives and supported me every single day despite the family challenges we had to face. Many more people helped profusely. I sincerely hope not to forget anyone. Marco Oliverio, Sabrina Macchioni, Letizia Argenti and Roberto Maltini were great SCUBA diving buddies during field activities. Betulla Morello, former researcher at ISMAR-CNR in Ancona, was my guide through the previously unexplored land of non-parametric multivariate statistics.

Los muestreos incluyeron un estudio espacial, en el que se muestrearon 10 estaciones con una draga Van-Veen (noviembre 1996), y un estudio temporal, en el que se realizaron inmersiones bimensuales con escafandra autónoma (mayo 1998-marzo 1999) en una estación. Durante el estudio espacial, se contabilizaron 158 taxones, siendo dominante el grupo de los poliquetos (91 taxones) frente al de los moluscos (67 taxones).
