  • Deconstructing Fame
Deconstructing Fame An Analysis of eSports Brand Value. The Case of Dota 2 Master Thesis (15 cr.) Department of Informatics and Media Media and Communication Studies Ilya Musabirov May 2016 Abstract This work is dedicated to studying pricing and valuation mechanisms of eSports brands in free-to-play game Dota 2. The object of the study are virtual autographs of Dota 2 professional players, which are traded on the market but, at the same time, do not provide buyers with any functional advantage in the game. The principal aim of the study is to reveal factors influencing the value of autographs and understand how the community of players evaluate them. Theoretical framework of current study borrows from economical sociology, in particular, ap- proach of Patrik Aspers who argues that standard and status markets have distinct forms of goods’ evaluation. Special attention in this work is focused on conception of status market on which there is no unified quality scale for evaluation, and all quality judgements are deeply entangled with market actors. Kornberger’s treatment of brands as ‘organising devices’ sup- plements the framework and supports the focus on devices of brands’ value construction. Mixed research strategy, combining qualitative, and quantitative methods is used to make sense of the data extracted from Steam community market and discussion from networking service Reddit. Results show that among the most influential factors explaining the price of autograph there are personal player performance statistics, team tournament performance, and media cover- age of player’s performance. The more detailed analysis of discussions on Reddit illustrates how evaluation devices are performed by the community of players and spectators.

Esports Spectatorship in Australia 2 Networked Society Institute, University of Melbourne Executive summary Esports – the organised, professional and spectated play of competitive digital games – has evolved into a massive global industry in the past decade. Boasting significant market value and broad global audience reach, esports is driven by modern highspeed internet infrastructure and live-streaming platforms like Twitch.tv. However, esports has yet to take hold as an industry in Australia, largely due to geographical isolation from major esports regions compounded by Australia’s traditionally lacklustre network infrastructure. Although the esports industry relies on various revenue streams, sponsorship and advertising deals provide the industry’s main source of funding. Teams, tournaments and esports organisations of various sizes are sponsored by major international companies like Intel, Samsung and Mercedes-Benz.

2 Abstract Both E-Sports and Virtual Reality have been the segments that have experimented the most growth in the videogame industry. This accelerated development of the E-Sports has left doubts about its communicative and economic potential. Therefore, on the one hand, this research focuses -at the theoretical level- on explaining the concept of E-sports, showing its communicative scope, both nationally and globally. On the other hand, -at the practical level- a quantitative analysis of the main variables will be carried out in order to show an approximation of the economic impact generated by said variables.

1 “We Esports Now”? Cultural Differences Between the Fighting Games Community and Other Esports Communities Helen Tang Keywords Esports, fighting games, GLOBE Project, culture, competitive gaming Author Biography Helen Tang is a Master’s student at SMU Guildhall, a game development school. She is studying video game production and has a strong interest in esports, having been involved in it since 2013. Elizabeth Stringer, MEd is a faculty member with the Guildhall at Southern Methodist University, Plano, TX 75024 USA ([email protected]). Abstract This study adapts the extensively used GLOBE cultural survey to compare different esports community cultures. Because of their arcade origins, the fighting games community (FGC) regards themselves as culturally unique and has many customs not found in other esports communities. This study found that the FGC and other esports communities differ in the specific cultural dimensions of Assertiveness, Humane Orientation, Institutional Collectivism, and Power Distance. They were similar in the Performance Orientation dimension. 2 Introduction Esports is defined as professional, competitive gaming, where players or teams compete against one another in organized competition for championship titles or money (Newzoo, 2019). There are many different game genres within esports, such as battle royales, first-person shooters, card games, multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), and fighting games (Hitt, 2019). The top four esports games of 2019, by prize money, were Fortnite, Dota 2, Counter- Strike: Global Offensive, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (Hitt, 2019). Global esports market revenue is significant, valued at $1.1 billion in 2019 (Pannekeet, 2019). One of the least profitable esports genres is fighting games, played by a niche group called the fighting games community (FGC), which first emerged in arcades.

Ready. Set. Game ON! Esports in India June 2021 Contents 24 Dawn of a new 60 sport - esports An INR100 billion economic impact 34 by FY2025 The growing esports ecosystem 68 Regulatory 46 environment Esports - more versatile, more 78 adaptable About this report 52 Esports – a major industry segment by FY 2025 Foreword The growth of esports in India has been nothing short of spectacular. As a sport, it has steadily gained popularity with youth, and consequently has become an attractive option for brands to connect with young and empowered audiences. As a game of skill accessible indoors and on the ubiquitous mobile phone, it gained much popularity during the lockdowns witnessed in 2020 and 2021. And as a mode of entertainment, it continues to serve hard core gamers as well as social gamers who wish to get competitive. Though at a nascent stage, the Indian esports industry has quickly scaled to INR3 billion in FY2021 and we expect it to reach INR11 billion by FY2025. However, the sport has a much larger economic impact: we expect it to generate economic value of around INR100 billion between now and FY2025. This report tries to capture the various manifestations of esports and determine its future potential. Our sincere thanks to the passionate esports community who gave us their time and valuable insights. We are sure you will find the report insightful and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. Ashish Pherwani Raghav Anand Partner, M&E Director, Digital media EY LLP (India) EY LLP (India) Executive summary A new kind of sport is on the rise in India, fuelled by a prize pool expected to reach INR1 billion by FY2025, and 1 it is not the same as online gaming.
