Sport, Politics and Ethnicity: Playing Badminton for Indonesia1
SPORT, POLITICS AND ETHNICITY: PLAYING BADMINTON FOR INDONESIA1 Colin Brown2 Faculty of Media, Society and Culture Curtin University of Technology The scholarly study of sport – in which ‘sports are viewed as cultural products that develop within sociohistorical contexts’3 -- is now well-established. However, the literature suffers from two important and related defects. One of these defects is its geographical focus. As van Bottenburg notes in his study Global Games the scholarly literature on sport: ‘is mainly limited to developments in the Western world. Information on the other continents is at best fragmentary, often collected in wide- ranging surveys’.4 In particular, relatively little has been written on sport and politics in the Asian context. South Asia is perhaps best served, for reasons which are mentioned below, but even here the coverage is slight compared with that of Europe and North America. The second defect is that the sports which have been studied are overwhelmingly those of European/North American origin, and in which peoples from these two traditions are still dominant. Very little has been written on sports where Europeans and Americans are not dominant, or at least major participants. In part, this undoubtedly reflects the cultural and ethnic origins of most sports scholars. But there also seems to be an assumption operating here that the important sports are the 1 This paper was presented to the 15th Biennial Conference of the Asian Studies Association of Australia in Canberra 29 June-2 July 2004. Our Badminton Greats
Our Badminton Greats The sport is believed to have been invented around 1873 in England and named after the country estate, Badminton, of the Duke of Beaufort whose guests called it "the Badminton game." The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules and in 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899. Popularized by British army officers in India, badminton eventually made its way to Malaya. ccording to school records, the game was first introduced to the V.I. in 1911 by the Headmaster, Mr. B. E. Shaw. Perhaps it was at the V.I. that the first badminton matches were played in Malaya but we cannot be absolutely sure of this. What we can be sure of is that these humble beginnings beside the Klang River and later on Petaling Hill helped spawn some of the great shuttlers who put Malaya and Malaysia on the badminton map of the world. Two gravel courts were initially made by Mr Shaw for the use of the Senior Cambridge classes and another court was added later on for the juniors. In 1921, three other courts became available for the use of the Lower School boys and Chua Chong Kwee was appointed the V.I.’s first badminton captain in 1923. As the sport gained popularity, Mr Shaw’s successor, Mr Richard Sidney, appointed Mr Yap Swee Hin as the badminton master in 1925 and added eight more new gravel courts for inter-house matches. -
Dr Oon Chong Teik: Shuttlecock and Stethoscope
Dr Oon Chong Teik: Shuttlecock and Stethoscope The Memoirs of an Extraordinary Sportsman FastCounter by bCentral Oon Chong Teik joined the V.I. from Batu Road School in 1948 and left in September 1954. He considered his time at the V.I. a good learning curve for life for he was a very unpredictable student academically. He could do extremely very well in his exams at times; then do so badly that the Headmaster, Mr F. Daniel, once asked him to leave school! Chong Teik's interests at the V.I. were mainly sporting. He was a middle distance athlete, good enough to be called on to represent Hepponstall House. He even competed in the Selangor Schools sports, winning the under-15 440 yards event with a time of 58 seconds. But his main love was badminton, not least of all because his father was a vice-president of the Selangor Badminton Association and his uncle was none other than the legendary Wong Peng Soon. He represented the V.I. in that sport, winning the 1951 Boys Open Doubles and the 1952 Boys Singles, and captaining the school team. Beyond the school hall other triumphs were also notched, beginning with his capture of the Selangor Schools Singles and Doubles number one titles. In 1953, Chong Teik's expanding badminton prowess brought him, with partner Jennie Lim, the Coronation Mixed Doubles title and the Selangor Junior Doubles title shared with Lai Fook Ying, who was the best non-V.I. player at that time. That same year, at age 16, matched against boys much older than himself, he won the inaugural Malayan schoolboys singles championship. -

Bab V Kesimpulan
