v PREFACE

The Valparaiso University Law School celebrated its 135th anniversary in 2014. Anyone who has had occasion to study the long history of this institution can appreciate the people and events that have shaped its unique character. What is apparent in examining the history of the Law School during any era is that it has always had a faculty of extremely gifted individuals - people whose skills and intellect enabled them to do most anything, but who ultimately chose to devote themselves to the education and training of young for service to their respective communities. It seems fitting then, to honor these men and women for their service by noting their scholarship - by taking a moment to record their works and note their interests and what was to them, worthy of intellectual pursuit and further inquiry before record of these works is lost to time.

This bibliography includes citations to faculty publications throughout the entire history of the Law School, beginning with its creation by Col. DeMotte in 1879 through the end of 2014. Though the bibliography is intended to be limited to the publications of permanent full-time faculty, in the early years of the Law School, the status of many faculty is not easily discernable. Additionally during those early years, heavy reliance was placed on lecturers who, though also practitioners, gave extensively of their time and talents to the Law School over a period of several years. Therefore, wide latitude was observed in determining which faculty members to include during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Modern methods of classifying faculty remove this difficulty, however, so the works of visiting and adjunct faculty have not been included. The works of clinical faculty have been included, and the publications of all librarians who have served the Law School appear separately. Also presented in appendices are alphabetical listings of all full-time and part-time faculty and librarians who have served the Law School.

The bibliography is limited to academic scholarship that is legal in character and thus generally excludes materials written by faculty concerning other disciplines. The bibliography includes books, book chapters, articles, book reviews, essays, forwards, prefaces, and tributes to other faculty members. It generally excludes newspaper articles, op-ed pieces, letters to editors, speeches, testimony, briefs, court opinions, blog posts or other articles appearing only online other than in electronic journals. It includes works published prior to and during a faculty member’s association with the Law School, but excludes those written subsequently. Works that could not be sufficiently identified for citation purposes have been omitted. Due to the differing nature of professional writing for librarians, wider latitude was observed in determining which of their publications to include.

vi On any project of this scope, omissions and errors, though unintentional, are unavoidable. Ongoing efforts to correct this bibliography will be made in the future, and suggestions for corrections will be gladly received.

This work could not have been completed without the assistance of Maru (Maria) De Martini, VULS 2011, student research assistant on the project. Special thanks also must be extended to Naomi Goodman, Technical Services Librarian Emerita of the Law School for her invaluable early work on this project; to Michael Bushbaum, Associate Law Librarian for Access Services for his technical assistance; and to Judith Miller of the University Archives for her help in locating essential documents and images. The cover design is the work of Rahsaan Taylor of the Law School’s Marketing Department.

* Note that prior to the mid-1960s, it was common for the most junior faculty member to be assigned as “librarian.” Those to have served in this capacity include Jack Hiller, David McCain, James Savage, and Robert Sander, among others. However, since these individuals have been included as regular faculty in this publication and were not formally-trained librarians, they have been omitted here.
