  • CANOEING at 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES Siarhei SHABLYKA 2011
CANOEING AT OLYMPIC GAMES 1924 1936 – 2008 1 C A N O E I N G AT THE 1996 SUMMER OLYMPICS The 1996 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXVI Olympiad and unofficially known as the Centennial Olympics were held July 19 to August 4 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Atlanta was selected on September 18, 1990 in Tokyo, Japan, over Athens, Belgrade, Manchester, Melbourne and Toronto. Atlanta's bid to host the Summer Games that began in 1987 was considered a long-shot, since the U.S. had hosted the Summer Olympics just 12 years earlier in Los Angeles. Atlanta's main rivals were Toronto, whose front running bid that began in 1986 seemed almost sure to succeed after Canada had held a successful 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and Melbourne, Australia, who hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and felt that the Olympic Games should return to Australia. The Athens bid was based on sentiment, the fact that these Olympic Games would be the 100th Anniversary of the first Summer Games in Greece in 1896. The chart's information below comes from the International Olympic Committee Vote History web page, regarding the cities that bid for the 1996 Olympic Games. The vote occurred at the 96th IOC Session in Tokyo, Japan. There were: 197 NOC’s; 10 320 athletes (3523 women and 6797 men); 271 events in 26 sports. LOGO POSTER The base of the torch mark logo, made The International Olympic Committee of the five Rings and the number 100, (IOC) President, Juan Antonio Samaranch, resembles a classical Greek column and chose this image drawn by an artist from "The recognizes the centennial of the Games.

  • Complements to the Base Technique in Sprint Kayak; Methods of Evaluation
1 2 Complements to the Base Technique in Sprint Kayak; Methods of Evaluation Summary The following is a study on the methods of evaluation of complementary elements of Base Technique. These are: 1. Meta-Technique – which represents the athlete’s primary objective and is closely related to the hydrodynamic characteristics and the statistical necessities of energy exchange; and 2. Micro-Technique – which relates to the specifics of force application with a view to achieving the desired objectives, using Base Technique as required. We will also be examining the physical principles relating to the various evaluations, as well as providing the formulae and showing the methods of video-analysis employed. With regards to the athletes’ Meta- and Micro-Techniques, we shall evaluate some of the elements identified in the video clips. An athlete with flawless technique will produce physical phenomena that leave predictable and consistent traces, which in turn represent the optimal point of reference. It is not a coincidence that these traces and phenomena correspond to the principles of propulsion of naval hydrodynamics. On the other hand, an athlete whose technique is imperfect will produce physical phenomena that leave chaotic traces, which are never similar to those we expect to see in optimal cases. We will also devote our attention to analysing races using GPS data for speed and frequency provided by the ICF (International Canoe Federation) and by the FISA (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron) for international races. It is possible to obtain a great quantity of information using said data: we can analyse information relating to quality, as well as indicating the fundamental ‘methods’ or ‘modes’.

Sturman, whose guidance, patience, and confidence in me have made my doctoral journey not only possible but also enjoyable. It is thanks to him that I was able to transcend the difficulties of academic work and find pleasure in reading, writing, painting, and calligraphy. As a role model, Professor Sturman taught me how to be an artful recluse like the Jiangnan literati. I am also greatly appreciative for the encouragement and counsel of Professor Hui-shu Lee. Without her valuable suggestions from its earliest stage, this project would never have taken shape. I would like to express appreciation to Professor Miriam Wattles for insightful comments and thought-provoking discussions that helped me to consider the issues of portraiture in a broader East Asian context. I owe a special debt of gratitude to Susan Tai, Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Asian Art at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. She was my Santa Barbara mother, and she helped made my eight-year sojourn in the American Riviera one that I will cherish forever.
