  • The Private Theaters in Crisis: Strategies at Blackfriars and Paul’S, 1606–07
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE PRIVATE THEATERS IN CRISIS: STRATEGIES AT BLACKFRIARS AND PAUL’S, 1606–07 Christopher Bryan Love, Ph.D., 2006 Directed By: Professor Theodore B. Leinwand, Department of English This study addresses the ways in which the managers and principal playwrights at second Paul’s and second Blackfriars approached opportunities in the tumultuous 1606–07 period, when the two troupes were affected by extended plague closures and threatened by the authorities because of the Blackfriars’ performance of offensive satires. I begin by demonstrating that Paul’s and Blackfriars did not neatly conform to the social and literary categories or commercial models typically employed by scholars. Instead, they were collaborative institutions that readily adapted to different circumstances and situations. Their small size, different schedules, and different economics gave them a flexibility generally unavailable to the larger, more thoroughly commercial adult companies. Each chapter explores a strategy used by the companies and their playwrights to negotiate a tumultuous theatrical market. The first chapter discusses the mercenary methods employed by the private children’s theaters. Occasionally, plays or play topics were commissioned by playgoers, and some performances at Paul’s and Blackfriars may even have been “private” in the sense of closed performances for exclusive audiences. In this context, I discuss Francis Beaumont’s The Knight of the Burning Pestle (Blackfriars, 1607), in which Beaumont uses the boorish citizens George and Nell to lay open the private theaters’ mercenary methods and emphasize sophisticated playgoers’ stake in the Blackfriars theater. The second chapter discusses the ways private-theater playwrights used intertextuality to entertain the better sort of playgoers, especially those who might buy quartos of plays.

THE SNOW GEESE PDF, EPUB, EBOOK William Fiennes | 200 pages | 07 Feb 2003 | Pan MacMillan | 9780330375795 | English | London, United Kingdom The Snow Goose (TV Movie ) - IMDb The Snow Goose is a simple, short written parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war. It documents the growth of a friendship between Philip Rhayader, an artist living a solitary life in an abandoned lighthouse in the marshlands of Essex because of his disabilities, and a young local girl, Fritha. The snow goose , symbolic of both Rhayader Gallico and the world itself, wounded by gunshot and many miles from home, is found by Fritha and, as the human friendship blossoms, the bird is nursed back to flight, and revisits the lighthouse in its migration for several years. As Fritha grows up, Rhayader and his small sailboat eventually are lost in the Dunkirk evacuation , having saved several hundred men. The bird, which was with Rhayader, returns briefly to the grown Fritha on the marshes. She interprets this as Rhayader's soul taking farewell of her and realizes she had come to love him. Afterwards, a German pilot destroys Rhayader's lighthouse and all of his work, except for one portrait Fritha saves after his death: a painting of her as Rhayader first saw her — a child, with the wounded snow goose in her arms. The Snow Goose was one of the O. Henry Prize Winners in Critic Robert van Gelder called it "perhaps the most sentimental story that ever has achieved the dignity of a Borzoi [prestige imprint of publisher Knopf] imprint.

It's more than 100 years old because that's how long the Children's Book Committee has been selecting The Best Children's Books of the Year. It's brand new because each list recommends the best of the new books published in the previous year.

Athena Strange isn’t like other children her age. She enjoys far more experimental projects in her free time, like resurrecting her neighbour’s dead cat in the middle of a wild lightning storm. After this experiment nearly burns down her house, Athena is invited to attend Prometheus High. A unique boarding school located on the ex-ocean liner the SS Unbound. Here, reanimation is a core subject, among other lessons like building robots and golems, learning the ins and outs of galvanism and catching frogs as they fall from the sky. And did we mention there’s magic? Yes, there’s magic, and it’s just the thing for this clever disaffected twelve-year-old. Once Athena sets foot aboard the rusty hulk, her adventures careen from one to another, the stakes are raised, danger is everywhere and mysteries are eventually revealed. A Note from the Rights team Stuart Wilson must have attended SS Unbound because he is the Creator of a world we love to get lost in! Prometheus High is packed full of adventure, starting with a Frankenstien-esque scene and a murder on-board a ship that Athena can no longer escape – we, like Athena, are thrown headfirst into this quirky and utterly enthralling tale.

  • The Australian Gothic Through the Novels of Sonya Hartnett
1 The Australian Gothic Through the Novels of Sonya Hartnett R. Miller Award: PhD Date: 2018 2 The Australian Gothic Through the Novels of Sonya Hartnett R. Miller A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the University’s requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2018 University of Worcester 3 Abstract The Australian Gothic Through the Novels of Sonya Hartnett Melbourne author Sonya Hartnett, adapts and updates the Australian Gothic within narratives that focus on individual subjectivities to bring to scrutiny the abuses that children suffer due to the invisibility of normative, hegemonic and conformist discourses. This study argues that Hartnett re-locates the colonial trope of the lost child from the wild setting of the bush to cultural topographies in the modern Australian context. The study’s theoretical approach combines concepts from phenomenology, cultural geography and spectral studies to form an hauntology which is articulated and applied to detailed analyses of eleven of Hartnett’s novels set in Australia. The conceptual framework is explained in chapter one and the remaining chapters group Hartnett’s novels thematically and in relation to the settings inhabited by her young protagonists. This structure enables the consideration of the dialectical relationship between places ‘exterior’ to the subject such as the Australian suburb or country town and the psychological ‘interior’ of the mind. Furthermore the study proposes that phenomenological experiences of place, space and time are central aspects of Hartnett’s
