However, the modern iteration of the party is frequently dated to 1876, when the election of Wade Hampton III as governor brought an end to the state’s Republican Reconstruction government and ushered in an era of almost absolute Democratic dominance in the state. As Don Fowler writes in the South Carolina Encyclopedia: Although there were vast differences of ideology, style, and sophistication among state Democrats, one overriding, enduring value and purpose held it together: maintaining a segregated party and society and ‘keeping the Negro population in their place,’ as well as an intense aversion to the Republican Party. Conflicts within the Democratic Party included elites versus populists, lowcountry versus upstate, mill workers versus mill owners, and conflicts of personality among political leaders. Without question, the dominant, controlling influence in South Carolina politics (and therefore the Democratic Party) was the established, conservative economic and social order.1 The Democratic Party of South Carolina (DPSC) exercised near-complete control over the state’s political scene through World War II. -

Neustadt, Director, 1966-1971 The urge to found an Institute of Politics had little to do with Harvard. It came, rather, from a natural concern of President Kennedy's family and friends after his death. The JFK library, al ready planned to house his presidential papers, was also to have been a headquarters for him when he retired from the Presidency. Now it would be not a living center focussed on him, active in the present, facing the future, but instead only an archive and museum faced to ward the past. The Institute was somehow to provide the living ele ment in what might otherwise soon turn into a "dead" memorial. Nathan Pusey, at the time Harvard's President, then took an initiative with Robert Kennedy, proposing that the Institute be made a permanent part of Harvard's Graduate School of Public Administra tion. The School—uniquely among Harvard's several parts—would be named for an individual, John F. Kennedy. Robert Kennedy ac cepted; these two things were done. The Kennedy Library Corpora tion, a fund-raising body charged to build the Library, contributed endowment for an Institute at Harvard. The University renamed its School the John Fitzgerald Kennedy School of Government, and created within it the Institute of Politics. -

Former DNC Chairs Urge Fellow Democrats to Support Trade Promotion Authority March 26, 2015 To Fellow Members of the Democratic Party, As former DNC Chairs, we are proud to be leaders in a Party that seeks to strengthen the middle class and ensure America’s safety and security. To that end, we support granting Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) to President Obama. TPA originates from the earliest trade negotiating authority, passed by the New Deal Congress in 1934 and signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. During the last four decades Congress has granted every President, Democrat and Republican alike, some version of trade promotion authority. To continue this bipartisan tradition, we stand behind the head of our Party, President Obama, in his quest for long-standing negotiating authority that allows Congress and the Executive branch to work together to pursue trade agreements that benefit Americans across the country. Moreover, TPA will clear a path for the President to pursue his pro-growth trade agenda—an agenda that will move America forward. As Democrats, we believe in rebuilding middle class security by putting Americans back to work. America's trade agreements are delivering for middle class families and our economic security. Our seventeen most recent trade agreements have improved the goods trade balance by $30 billion every year—that is some serious progress. The United States exported $2.35 trillion in Made-in-America goods and services in 2014, our fifth record-breaking year in a row. The increase in U.S. exports has contributed one-third of our economic growth and added $760 billion to our economy between 2009-2014. -

The resulting Committee on Party Structure and Delegate Selection (better known as the McGovern-Fraser Commission), at the direction of the 1968 convention, opened the Democratic Party to those outside of the Democratic establishment. -

Japanese- American relations were extremely cordial before the Russo- Japanese War. After Theodore Roosevelt mediated the war, however, the Japanese were very disappointed in the results. In the fall of the following year, a conflict over the ad- mission of Japanese pupils to the schools of San Francisco incurred the wrath of the Japanese government, and many in America believed that war between the two countries was imminent. -

Changing Course: Reversing the Organizational Trajectory of the Democratic Party from Bill Clinton to Barack Obama∗ Daniel J. Galvin Abstract The enthusiasm for organization-building we observe today in the Democratic Party finds its roots in the 1990s. As the Democrats’ competitive standing declined, their approach to their party organization began to change. With a newfound desire to recapture the majority, Democratic Party leaders began to make sustained investments in their party organization for the first time in over forty years. However, while new electoral uncertainties created new incentives for party building, translating those incentives into change at an organizational level happened only gradually, in a piecemeal fashion. Tracing the efforts of Democratic Party leaders from Bill Clinton to Barack Obama, this article argues that party building is a collective, cumulative process that takes time, resources, and persistent attention.
