    I am a Biochemistry master student at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and conducted my master’s thesis in the Kirkeby group at the at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Neuroscience. I had already done a three-month internship in Edinburgh, however wanted to additionally conduct my master thesis abroad. I chose Copenhagen since my grandfather was Danish and I still had distant relatives in Copenhagen. So I had some connection to Denmark and wanted to explore that more. In addition, the University of Copenhagen has a good reputation. Therefore, I looked at research groups on the University of Copenhagen website. Upon reading a few papers of each research group, I found interesting, I wrote them an email showing my interest in their research. Some group leaders did not reply, one said that they didn’t have any vacancies, but one replied wanting to set up a skype meeting. I prepared for the skype meeting by writing down my experience including my bachelor thesis project. I talked to the group leader and my potential supervisor. They were very nice and asked about my lab experience and they told me about the project. When we ended the conversation, they said they would get back to me in two days. They agreed to have me in their lab and then I started the paperwork. Firstly, I registered my master’s thesis at the student office. This involved writing a proposal. I asked my external supervisor for some help and he gave me a few notes which enabled me to write a one-page proposal.

    Borgmestergården – 100 år i Den Gamle By Af Niels Meyer og Mathilde Schødt Veland I 100-året for Borgmestergårdens åbning i Den Gamle By kaster nye bygningsarkæologiske undersøgelser lys over gårdens histo- rie, hvor dele af bindingsværket kan dateres til middelalderen. Hovedresultaterne sammenfattes her af bygningsarkæolog, cand. mag. Mathilde Schødt Veland, som står bag undersøgelsen, samt bygingschef, arkitekt maa. Niels Meyer. Borgmestergården kender de fleste som en af de store køb- mandsgårde i Den Gamle By, men bygningen er meget mere end det – det er selve begyndelsen på Den Gamle By. Peter Holm havde stor succes med “Den Gamle Borg- mestergaard” på Landsudstillingen i 1909, og det gav ham rygstød til i 1914 at flytte hele huset en gang mere, til hvor det står i dag, og hvor det nu i 100 år har formidlet dansk boligkultur fra renæssancen til midten af 1800-tallet. Men det at flytte huse og rekonstruere historiske helheder var ab- solut ikke anerkendt i datidens museumskredse. Både Natio- nalmuseets direktør, Sophus Müller og formanden for Aarhus Museum, Konsul Frederik Ollendorff var imod projektet. Borgmestergården er bygget om Ollendorff udtalte faktisk, at det eneste bevaringsværdige flere gange. Peter Holm valgte ved genopførelsen i Den Gamle ved Borgmestergården, var porthammeren med indskrift og By 1914 at lade den fremstå, årstal, og at det øvrige kunne blive til “pindebrænde”.     “The sons of Denmark who after emigrating brought honour to their homeland” 29.11.17 A monument to Danes who lost their lives fighting in the First World War is beautifully situated in Århus, Denmark’s second largest city. The names of the men are listed in (almost) alphabetical order, both those who fought for Germany and those who fought for the Allies. The dates and places of birth and death are recorded but neither rank nor regiment: they are equal in having been killed in the line of duty. The majority, 4000, were “Danish-minded” from the Schleswig region who had been conscripted into the German forces while 140 were Danes who had either voluntarily gone abroad for the purpose of joining up or as immigrants, fought for the Allied forces. While there was some controversy over whether specific Schleswigers were sufficiently “Danish-minded” to warrant the honour of being named on the monument, some of the Danes who had emigrated and were killed while serving for the Allies apparently didn’t have, for whatever reason, families to put their names forward. The following 4 all gave their lives for the Allies and also all had a connection with Næstved, a small town on southern Zealand, Denmark. The Andersen/Anderson brothers The brothers Andersen from Stenstrup and Næstved, are named on the monument. They came from a working class family. Their father had originally worked on a farm before the family had moved into the local town. His beautiful young wife, on the photo with her 4 children, died aged 23.

    364 City portraits AARHUS 365 Kathrine Hansen Kihm and Kirstine Lilleøre Christensen History and general information One of the oldest nations in Europe, the Kingdom of Denmark is today a constitutional monarchy as well as a modern Nordic welfare state. Aarhus is located in Central Denmark on the eastern side of the Jutland peninsula. Jutland is the only part of Denmark that is connected to the mainland of Europe as 41% of the country consists of 443 named islands. The capital Copenhagen is on the island Zealand (Sjælland in Danish), which is 157 km south-east of Aarhus measured in a straight line and 303 km when driving across the island2 Funen (Fyn in Danish). Aarhus has 242,914 inhabitants2 in the urban area (of 91 km ) and 306,650 in the municipal area (of 467 km ). Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark not only measured in size, but also in the extent of trade, education, industry and cultural activities. The main employers of Aarhus are the Aarhus Municipality and the Aarhus University Hospital. th Aarhus originated in the 8 century from a Viking settlement, which was built around Aarhus River and still marks the centre of town and laid the foundation for the major industrial port that Aarhus has today. Besøgstallet er på nogenlunde samme høje niveau som i rekordåret. Stort set hele den første etape af 1974-projektet er nu afsluttet og åbnet for publikum. Nye spændende projekter er i støbeskeen. Og vi krydser fingre for – og tror på – at den foreslåede fredning af Botanisk Have ikke får en karakter, så den vil spænde ben for Den Gamle Bys fremtidige udvikling. Højt besøgstal og god økonomi er grundlag for nødvendige investeringer Helt præcist nåede besøgstallet for 2014 op på 499.247, og totalindtægterne nåede godt 132 mio kr, heraf de 32 i offentlige tilskud. Samtidig med en stram udgiftsstyring har det gode besøgstal betydet, at Den Gamle Bys økonomi er blevet væsentligt styrket, så vi har kunnet begynde at lægge penge til side til en række uomgængelige investeringer, der presser sig på i takt med museets vækst. Målsætningen for klima- og skybrudssikringen er fastsat i Frederiksberg Kommunes Klimatilpasningsplan 2012 og Skybrudskonkretiseringsplanerne fra 2013 og 2014. Heraf fremgår det, at målet er maksimalt 10 cm vand på terræn under en 100 års regn med 2112 som referenceår. I henhold til de overordnede intentioner i Frederiksberg Kommunes Skybrudskonkretiseringsplaner er det derudover et mål at udforme løsninger, der udover den hydrauliske funktion også kan bibringe byen attraktive grønne og blå elementer. Endvidere er der i Frederiksberg Kommunes Klimatilpasningsplan defineret en målsætning om, at fremtidssikring af kloakken og fastholdelse af kloakkens servicemål skal foregå gennem de planlagte skybrudsprojekter samt ved at frakoble gennemsnitlig 30 % af tag- og overfladevandet inden for 100 år. Projekterne beskrevet i nærværende ansøgning er et led i bestræbelserne på at nå disse mål og en videreførelse af den allerede vedtagne klimatilpasningsplan. Skybrudskonkretiseringsplanerne fra 2013 og 2014 blev udarbejdet i samarbejde mellem Frederiksberg og Københavns kommuner. Resultatet af planerne er en opdeling af Hovedstaden (København- og Frederiksberg Kommune) i syv vandoplande, hvoraf Frederiksberg Kommune indgår i to af disse oplande.
