Metro Morning: CBC Radio Toronto Monday, February 13, 2012: 7:12 a.m. Interview with John Stapleton by host Matt Galloway MATT GALLOWAY The gap between the rich and the poor in this city is much broader than just the 1% versus the 99%. In fact, according to a new report by the Metcalf Foundation, that gap is getting wider across the GTA and those who are a part of the working poor are more numerous than perhaps even before the 2008 recession This study looks at the working poor and people who have a job, perhaps even more than one but make less then what used to be called the poverty line. John Stapleton is one of the co-authors of the study. He’s with me in studio now. Good morning. JOHN STAPLETON Good morning Matt. MATT GALLOWAY Much of what you do in this report initially defines that term, the working poor. So, from your perspective, what is the working poor? JOHN STAPLETON Well, we had to come up with a new and resilient definition and anyone who has over $3,000.00 in earnings, we said that is a threshold for the working poor and then we took ‘what is known’ as the low income measure, the Stats Canada poverty line that varies by family size, and let’s say that for a single person right now that’s about $18,500 after tax. MATT GALLOWAY $18,500? JOHN STAPLETON Yes. MATT GALLOWAY And again, these are people who are working at one or more jobs. -

PAYING ATTENTION TO PUBLIC READERS OF CANADIAN LITERATURE: POPULAR GENRE SYSTEMS, PUBLICS, AND CANONS by KATHRYN GRAFTON BA, The University of British Columbia, 1992 MPhil, University of Stirling, 1994 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2010 © Kathryn Grafton, 2010 ABSTRACT Paying Attention to Public Readers of Canadian Literature examines contemporary moments when Canadian literature has been canonized in the context of popular reading programs. I investigate the canonical agency of public readers who participate in these programs: readers acting in a non-professional capacity who speak and write publicly about their reading experiences. I argue that contemporary popular canons are discursive spaces whose constitution depends upon public readers. My work resists the common critique that these reading programs and their canons produce a mass of readers who read the same work at the same time in the same way. To demonstrate that public readers are canon-makers, I offer a genre approach to contemporary canons that draws upon literary and new rhetorical genre theory. I contend in Chapter One that canons are discursive spaces comprised of public literary texts and public texts about literature, including those produced by readers. I study the intertextual dynamics of canons through Michael Warner’s theory of publics and Anne Freadman’s concept of “uptake.” Canons arise from genre systems that are constituted to respond to exigencies readily recognized by many readers, motivating some to participate. I argue that public readers’ agency lies in the contingent ways they select and interpret a literary work while taking up and instantiating a canonizing genre. -

Canada's Public Space
CBC/Radio-Canada: Canada’s Public Space Where we’re going At CBC/Radio-Canada, we have been transforming the way we engage with Canadians. In June 2014, we launched Strategy 2020: A Space for Us All, a plan to make the public broadcaster more local, more digital, and financially sustainable. We’ve come a long way since then, and Canadians are seeing the difference. Many are engaging with us, and with each other, in ways they could not have imagined a few years ago. Our connection with the people we serve can be more personal, more relevant, more vibrant. Our commitment to Canadians is that by 2020, CBC/Radio-Canada will be Canada’s public space where these conversations live. Digital is here Last October 19, Canadians showed us that their future is already digital. On that election night, almost 9 million Canadians followed the election results on our CBC.ca and Radio-Canada.ca digital sites. More precisely, they engaged with us and with each other, posting comments, tweeting our content, holding digital conversations. CBC/Radio-Canada already reaches more than 50% of all online millennials in Canada every month. We must move fast enough to stay relevant to them, while making sure we don’t leave behind those Canadians who depend on our traditional services. It’s a challenge every public broadcaster in the world is facing, and CBC/Radio-Canada is further ahead than many. Our Goal The goal of our strategy is to double our digital reach so that 18 million Canadians, one out of two, will be using our digital services each month by 2020. -

The CAB Radio Council is a special committee of the CAB whose primary purpose is to advocate on behalf of the private commercial radio industry on matters of national interest which affect radio’s competitiveness and ability to serve Canadians. The council is comprised of representatives from more than 500 AM and FM radio stations across Canada which comprise in aggregate over 95% of total radio industry revenues. The attached submission represents the consensus view of the CAB Radio Council in respect of legislative and policy matters raised by the questions relating to the Broadcasting Act and relevant to radio. We trust that our comments are of value to the Panel and would be pleased to provide any additional input should it be requested.
