Writing Rules with Precision Writing Rules Precisely Writing Precise Rules by Mike Selinker I’ve redesigned, expanded, adapted, and creative-directed a lot of very big games: Axis & Allies, Dungeons & Dragons, Attack!, Risk, and the like. Their rule sets are often similarly gigantic, which means they need special attention paid to clarity and purpose. Otherwise, I might get a game whose FAQ is longer than other games’ entire rulebooks. Here, I’ll go into what makes a rule set good, and what makes one not so good. I play games for a living. Writing rules is what I do for fun. Of all the things I like about being a game designer, the ability to craft something elegant is the one I enjoy most, because it’s a difficult thing to do well. I have a few rules writing maxims that I’ve never put in one place. They’re about what you write when your game has made it out of the development phase and now needs to be played by people who aren’t you. If you’d like to try them out, have a go. I’ll also introduce each of the ten maxims with a game rule that deserved some extra attention, but didn’t get it. Use no intermediary terminology A hexagonal grid has been printed on the board to determine movement. October 2017 i Abstract: This project will consist of two chapter excerpts to a novel, Fear, and a contextualising thesis looking into the current representations of the emotion and character within the Young Adult genre. Fear, a Young Adult and Dark Fantasy novel, is told through the perspective of the protagonist, Imogen, and explores her coping with the loss of her father and finding misguided strength, power, and control through Fear and inflicting the emotion upon others. I will look into how fear has been represented throughout the Young Adult genre, and how I have chosen to represent my characters in regards to the genre. As well as this, I will explore how the relationships between protagonist and antagonists have been employed in existing literature in comparison to my own narrative. The stereotypical conventions of writing for young adults will also be analysed, exploring what makes them popular and why, what tropes I felt best to use and subvert. -

Many libretti for the ballets produced for the S. Carlos Theater have survived and are now housed in the National Library of Portugal. This dissertation focuses on the narratives of the libretti in this collection, and their importance as documentation of ballets of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, from the inauguration of the S. Carlos Theater in 1793 to 1850. This period of dance history, which has not received much attention by dance scholars, links the earlier baroque dance era of the eighteenth century with the style of ballet of the 1830s to the 1850s. Portugal had been associated with Italian art and artists since the beginning of the eighteenth century. This artistic relationship continued through the final decades of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. The majority of the choreographers working in Lisbon were Italian, and the works they created for the S. Carlos Theater followed the Italian style of ballet d’action. -
