  • Tonbridge Castle and Its Lords
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 16 1886 TONBRIDGE OASTLE AND ITS LORDS. BY J. F. WADMORE, A.R.I.B.A. ALTHOUGH we may gain much, useful information from Lambard, Hasted, Furley, and others, who have written on this subject, yet I venture to think that there are historical points and features in connection with this building, and the remarkable mound within it, which will be found fresh and interesting. I propose therefore to give an account of the mound and castle, as far as may be from pre-historic times, in connection with the Lords of the Castle and its successive owners. THE MOUND. Some years since, Dr. Fleming, who then resided at the castle, discovered on the mound a coin of Con- stantine, minted at Treves. Few will be disposed to dispute the inference, that the mound existed pre- viously to the coins resting upon it. We must not, however, hastily assume that the mound is of Roman origin, either as regards date or construction. The numerous earthworks and camps which are even now to be found scattered over the British islands are mainly of pre-historic date, although some mounds may be considered Saxon, and others Danish. Many are even now familiarly spoken of as Caesar's or Vespa- sian's camps, like those at East Hampstead (Berks), Folkestone, Amesbury, and Bensbury at Wimbledon. Yet these are in no case to be confounded with Roman TONBEIDGHE CASTLE AND ITS LORDS. 13 camps, which in the times of the Consulate were always square, although under the Emperors both square and oblong shapes were used.* These British camps or burys are of all shapes and sizes, taking their form and configuration from the hill-tops on which they were generally placed.

  • The Lowy of Tonbridge
http://kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/archaeologia-cantiana/ Kent Archaeological Society is a registered charity number 223382 © 2017 Kent Archaeological Society THE LOWY OF TONBRIDGE By W. V. D1TIVIBRECK TILE origin, nature and extent of the Lowy have interested many writers and produced not a little fiction. Lambard starts a story about Richard FitzGilbert being granted an area of land around Ton.bridge castle equal to the area he had possessed at Brionne in Normandy, precisely measured by a piece of rope. Harris elaborates this story and gives particulars of the separate judicial rights of the Lowy and perambulations of the boundary made in 1259 and 1279, acknowledging that they were supplied by "Captain George Weller of Tunbridge Town". The source of Harris' information is amongst the Weller- Pooley documents now in Kent Archives (KAO U38/Z2) and is marked "Copy taken out of an old copy ". They are notes made by Thomas Weller (1602-1670) the parliamentary lawyer in Tonbridge and lessee of the castle and manor. Why were two perambulations necessary and how are the differences between them explainable? The second followed the complaints of encroachments by Richard de Clare and his bailiff which are detailed in the Plea Rolls. We cannot rely on the names given by Harris (and copied by Hasted) as many mistakes have been made in the copying and re-copying. Fortunately the Archbishop's copy of the 1279 perambulation is still in. the Chapter House library at Canterbury (Ch. Ant. T32). It is written in a clear thirteenth century hand and is in excellent condition.

  • 1066-1272 Eastern Sussex Under the Norman and Angevin Kings of England
1066-1272 Eastern Sussex under the Norman and Angevin kings of England From the Battle of Hastings through the accession of William II until the death of Henry II Introduction In this paper the relationships of the post-Conquest kings of England to Battle and eastern Sussex between 1087 and 1272 are explored. The area ‘eastern Sussex’ corresponds to that described as ‘1066 Country’ in modern tourism parlance and covers the area west to east from Pevensey to Kent and south to north from the English Channel coast to Kent. Clearly the general histories of the monarchs and associated events must be severely truncated in such local studies. Hopefully, to maintain relevance, just enough information is given to link the key points of the local histories to the kings, and events surrounding the kings. Also in studies which have focal local interest there can inevitably be large time gaps between events, and some local events of really momentous concern can only be described from very little information. Other smaller events can be overwhelmed by detail, particularly later in the sequence, when more detailed records become available and ‘editing down’ is required to keep some basic perspective. The work is drawn from wide sources and as much as possible the text has been cross referenced between different works. A list of sources is given at the end of the sequence. Throughout the texts ‘Winchelsea’ refers to ‘Old Winchelsea’ which may have only been a small fishing village in 1066, but by the 1200s had become a sizable and important, if somewhat independently minded and anarchic town, which stood on a large shingle bank east of the present Winchelsea, possibly just south of where Camber castle still stands today.

  • Annex 1 Tonbridge Sports Association Report We Have Pleasure In
Annex 1 Tonbridge Sports Association Report We have pleasure in presenting our report for the 100 years from 5th May 1920 to 5th May 2020. The Association has been continuously involved with every aspect of sports activity, in and around Tonbridge, and this report highlights our achievements throughout the period. A meeting was held in Tonbridge Castle, called by the Parks Committee of the Tonbridge Urban District Council, to elect a committee to form a Sports Association to control and manage an unofficial horse racing area, for the benefit of sport in Tonbridge. The members of the committee came from the sports and social sections of companies operating in the Tonbridge area. The initial monthly meetings, which were very well attended, created rules concerning the allocation and the charging for facilities. By agreement with the Council, the grounds could not be used on a Sunday, this not changing until 1935. Also no dogs would be allowed as the Sports Association was to receive income from the grazing of sheep. By 1923 a grounds man had been employed to maintain what had become the official Racecourse Sportsground. By 1927 the use had extended to Cricket, Tennis, Stoolball, Bowls, Putting, Lacrosse, Football, Rugby, Hockey and Netball. In 1928, under the supervision of Mr Beech, the Racecourse was reported as being one of the best sporting centres in the County. Even though the original 14 acres has been extended to nearly 40 acres, during most of the 1930’s we could not accommodate all the applications for use. By May 1946 most of the pre-war clubs had reactivated.
