Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Jessica Wolfe Patrick O’Neill Mary Floyd-Wilson Reid Barbour Megan Matchinske ©2019 Jerrod Nathan Rosenbaum ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Jerrod Rosenbaum: Beyond the Bosphorus: The Holy Land in English Reformation Literature, 1516-1596 (Under the direction of Jessica Wolfe) This dissertation examines the concept of the Holy Land, for purposes of Reformation polemics and apologetics, in sixteenth-century English Literature. The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict. -

An impressive amount of recent critical work has dealt with the philosophic element in Voltaire's tragedies. His plays have been labelled a theatre of involvement and a theatre of ideas; they have been examined from the standpoint of propaganda and as tragedyl. However,the focus of such studies has been primarily on Voltaire's message or on the meaning ofthe plays, rather than on the dramatic structure he created to convey his philosophic concerns. Today, of course, Voltaire does not rank high either as an original thinker or as a dramatist. -

E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 2 No 3 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy November 2013 Goethe and his Encounter with Voltaire in Moments of Islamic and Orientalist Discourse Edvin Cami University “Aleksandër Moisiu”, Durrës E-mail: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/ajis.2013.v2n3p547 Abstract Goethe’s views on the Orient and Islam constitute a very interesting phenomenon in the context of the Western society of 18th and 19th centuries. While Goethe also was part of the anticlericalism established with the Enlightenment, other than Voltaire, rather than exerting any criticism to religion in itself, he tries to track and recognize the common roots and values of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Especially in his poetical work West-östlicher Divan (West-eastern Divan), and through his concept of Weltliteratur, he shows a completely different imagology of the Orient compared to the Western society of his time. Introduction: Goethe and his “Encounter” with Voltaire The “encounter” of Goethe with Voltaire occurred in a literary reality, as the former translated into German the latter’s abovementioned dramatic work Le fanatisme ou Mahomet le prophète. Goethe’s surprisingly positive opinion on Islam was a well known reality to many even in his time, including the duke Carl August, who commissioned him to translate Voltaire’s work. The duke was conscious that Goethe – whom he jovially called “Meccanus” due to the poet’s sympathy for Islam and the Orient – had to work “against his own nature” for the translation of Le fanatisme. -

1 | CHARLIE HEBDO, REPUBLICAN SECULARISM AND ISLAMOPHOBIA Aurélien Mondon and Aaron Winter The attack against Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7 January 2015 took place in a context in which Islamophobia had become increasingly mainstream in France.1 The widespread albeit uneven use of the slogan ‘Je Suis Charlie’ across France and the Western world represented for many an assertion of solidarity, and more specifically identification, with Charlie Hebdo and its championing of liberal Enlightenment and Republican values of freedom of speech. This reaction, we were told, was in response to the threat posed by Muslim extremists and terrorists. However, the boundaries between a critique of extremism and terrorism and that of Islamophobia (and anti-Muslim hate), as well as that between the defence of liberal values, Islamophobia and securitisation, have become increasingly blurry. The string of deadly attacks by those identified or self-identifying as ‘Islamist’ and linked to IS (however tenuous that link may be) which have taken place since in Paris, Nice and Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray have rendered them ever fuzzier. It is for this reason, and the mapping of these discourses and practices as they relate or are deployed in relation to Islam and Muslims, however loosely defined, that we employ our concepts of illiberal and liberal Islamophobia (Mondon and Winter 2017). The illiberal articulation of Islamophobia, or ‘anti-Muslim’ hate, is closest to traditional racism based around exclusivist notions and concepts of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and religion, as well as identity itself, and is commonly associated with the extreme right and authoritarian treatment of minority groups and rights. -

In this paper, I trace briefly recent selected writings in English and in Indonesian on Muhammad and the Hadith for the purpose of presenting some of the main research questions and arguments as well as their sources and approaches. Keywords: Muhammad, hadith, west, Indonesia Introduction: Literature Review, Approach, and Objectives Journal articles and book chapters have sought to survey the trends in the study of the biography of Muhammad and those in the study of the Hadith within Western and Islamic scholarships. One of such chapters traces the Western scholarship on Muhammad, mentioning Maxime Robinson’s Mahomet, W. Montgomery Watt’s Muhammad at Mecca and Muhammad at Medina. The Cambridge Companion to Muhammad represents current trends in the scholarly study of Muhammad’s life and legacy, combining historical- critical analyses of the classical texts and the views and interpretations of the later scholars and Muslim communities in the past and in the present (Brockopp, 2010: 1-10). In a brief article, Adis Duderija seeks to trace the development of the Hadith literature and the concept of the Hadith authenticity as defined by the classical Islamic study of the Hadith (ulum al-hadith) as based on Western scholarship. -

After applying the legal framework and different legal philosophical justifications for free speech to the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, the analysis will take a closer look at a similar controversy in Denmark. As in the Danish cartoon controversy, analysing the broader socio-political context can provide a deeper understanding of the root causes of the protests following the attack. Drawing on critical discourse analysis this thesis investigates the question to what extend the public discourse on free speech in France after the attack on Charlie Hebdo and the role of French Muslims in this debate reflect power relations within the French society. Such power relations indeed manifest themselves in this discourse as it was the official side who started the discourse and had the power to chose wording, meaning of concepts, the topoi and to define ingroups and outgroups. Societal inequalities can also be noticed through participation and representation of French Muslisms and their interaction to the other groups present in the discourse. -

YET, ANOTHER PRE-DARBY RAPTURE STATEMENT by Thomas Ice In the eight years that I have been working as Executive Director of the Pre-Trib Research Center, there have been three major discoveries of writings teaching some form of a pretribulational rapture. The most recent find has been brought forth from an unexpected source that I will reveal to you in this article. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Since many non-pretribulationists often formulate a historical argument against those teaching the pre-trib rapture, it is important to know that some did teach a rapture before the tribulation and distinct from the second coming. Rapture critic Gary DeMar says, “All attempts to find a pretrib Rapture any earlier than around 1830 do not stand up to historical scrutiny.”1 Of course, J. N. Darby himself first discovered pretribulationism from his own biblical studies during December 1826 and January 1827.2 But there are those who preceded Darby, as I have written about in the past.
