Por una parte, está el hecho de que el protestantismo latinoamericano tiene, en varios sentidos, una marcada afinidad, cuando no una vinculación histórica directa o indirecta (menonitas y bautistas, por ejemplo) con aquel movimiento. Nuestro protestantismo fue formado por iglesias no establecidas, que nacieron en nuestro suelo en medio del conflicto y la persecución, que tienen frecuentemente organización congregacional y se reúnen en torno a una confesión personal por adultos; ellas encontrarán en las características sociológicas y en los énfasis teológicos de los movimientos radicales del siglo XVI un rico material de reflexión para precisar su propia identidad. Por otra parte, el cristianismo latinoamericano se ve enfrentado hoy, sin distinciones confesionales, a la problemática del cambio social, la crisis de un sistema y la necesidad de proclamar y vivir la fe en medio de los dolores de un penoso tránsito. En la Europa del norte del siglo XVI, la cristiandad conoció un trance análogo, y la Reforma Radical gestó en él una serie de respuestas que, aunque diversas entre sí tanto en su teología como en su praxis social, tienen una cierta coherencia renovadora con significativas lecciones para nuestro presente. Finalmente, y precisamente en esta situación, los textos de la Reforma Radical pueden tener un potencial fecundante para la renovación teológica que se ha iniciado en nuestro continente. Por estas razones, la Asociación de Seminarios e Instituciones Teológicas (ASIT) creyó oportuno incluir en la Serie Teológica Mayor de su colección de textos esta selección crítica de algunos de los documentos más importantes y significativos de la Reforma Radical. Coincidió afortunadamente esta intención con la presencia en nuestro medio del destacado especialista, profesor John Howard Yoder que se brindó enteramente a la realización de este proyecto, tanto en la selección de los 8 Textos escogidos de la Reforma Radical textos, como en la supervisión de su difícil traducción, la preparación de una enjundiosa Introducción general y las introducciones a los distintos textos. Este material hace del libro, no sólo un valioso texto de lectura sino una edición crítica indispensable para la investigación del tema. Cabe expresar, además, la gratitud de ASIT a las iglesias menonitas de Estados Unidos y Holanda cuyo apoyo financiero ha hecho posible esta producción. En la Europa del siglo XVI una serie de cristianos sensibles a su tiempo y a su pueblo, movidos desde el interior de su fe, nos brindaron estos testimonios. Un historiador contemporáneo, comprometido en esta misma herencia, nos permite ubicarlos hoy históricamente. Pero el círculo del significado sólo se completará con una lectura latinoamericana de estos textos, a saber, una lectura desde la crisis de nuestra propia historia y la vivencia y el compromiso de nuestra propia fe. En la esperanza de que ese verdadero «testimonio» advenga, ofrecemos esta obra. Fue esta una tarea rodeada de serias dificultades, particularmente debido al carácter poco clásico del lenguaje de varios de los escritores. Prólogo a la edición de Biblioteca Menno Desde Biblioteca Menno estamos procurando promover la literatura cristiana que nace en el seno de nuestras comunidades «anabautistas, menonitas, Hermanos en Cristo» y afines. Nuestro arraigo común es el movimiento anabaptista del siglo XVI, situado dentro de lo que el presente libro llama Reforma radical. Para cierto nivel de investigación sobre los inicios del movimiento anabaptista, siempre será necesario un conocimiento adecuado de diferentes variantes regionales del alemán de finales del medioevo, y el flamenco, holandés y frisón de aquella misma era. El movimiento anabaptista sucedió en el siglo XVI en una franja que cruzaría el centro de Europa desde Suiza al sur, hasta la costa entre Flandes y el oeste de Polonia, al norte. Los protagonistas del anabaptismo solían pensar, comunicarse y escribir en sus respectivas lenguas vernáculas. Algunos, bien es cierto, podrían haberlo hecho en latín si les hubiera interesado. Pero por la naturaleza del movimiento, nacido desde el seno del pueblo llano cristiano, preferían hacerlo en palabras propias del pueblo. Sin embargo, por lo menos a manera de introducción al anabaptismo, no está nada mal tener obras en español. Ojalá fueran más. Nos encontramos muy lejos de las múltiples riquezas bibliográficas que existen en inglés sobre los anabaptistas de la era de la Reforma protestante. Nos complace, en cualquier caso, poner otra vez a disposición de los lectores en lengua castellana, esta colección de traducciones de escritos del siglo XVI, que nos abrirán una ventana fascinante a la pluralidad y multiplicidad de voces originales que configuraron el ala «radical» de la Reforma protestante. Con la desaparición, hace bastantes años, de la editorial La Aurora, de Buenos Aires, no hemos sabido cómo proceder para obtener permiso para reproducir este libro que ellos habían publicado en 10 Textos escogidos de la Reforma Radical 1976. Al final hemos optado por solicitar permiso de la familia de John H. Yoder, que se expresaron encantados de que este trabajo suyo no cayera en el olvido. Esta es una reproducción de aquella edición. I understand that this thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract In early 1530, the lay preacher and recent Anabaptist convert Melchior Hoffman published a series of seventy-seven visions by the Strasbourg butcher’s wife Ursula Jost. In its own day this series of visions, which is the longest extant sixteenth-century document written from the perspective of an Anabaptist woman, attracted the attention of Strasbourg’s authorities and became popular among Dutch Anabaptists who followed Hoffman. In the twentieth century the visions have been studied by Klaus Deppermann and Lois Barrett, who came to widely diverging conclusions on Ursula’s values and her place in the Anabaptist movement. Deppermann saw her as an angry, even bloodthirsty woman whose visions revealed “a murderous hatred of existing society” and inspired violent actions of the part of other Anabaptists, while Barrett argued that Ursula’s visions reflected “the Anabaptist-Mennonite ethic of establishing the reign of God nonviolently.” In light of the radically different conclusions reached by Deppermann and Barrett, this study conducts a fresh re-examination of the visions of Ursula Jost in order to determine what Ursula’s example reveals about sixteenth-century Anabaptism.

    Adam Pastor’s Vnderscheit/Onderscheet: The Reputation of an Anabaptist Bishop Alongside Menno Simons and Dirk Philips1 THEO BROK* Abstract: Adam Pastor (c.1500 - c.1565) was an itinerant Anabaptist bishop in the Lower Rhine region. Ordained by Menno Simons around 1542, he is best known for the division that unfolded with Dirk Philips and Menno Simons in 1547 over Pastor’s opposition to Menno’s Melchiorite doctrine of the incarnation and for his subsequent denial, at least implicitly, of the trinity several years later, which led to the first schism in Mennonitism. Although sixteenth-century contemporaries described him as an important bishop alongside Menno, Mennonite historiography since then has largely ignored him, due to his anti-trinitarianism. Today, Pastor’s theological views are known primarily from his Vnderscheit (Distinctions) of ca. 1554. The recent discovery of an earlier and hitherto unknown version of this writing, however, calls for a fresh examination of Adam Pastor, his break with Menno Simons and Dirk Philips, and the consequences of that division. ADAM PASTOR’S PLACE WITHIN ANABAPTISM Adam Pastor was an itinerant Anabaptist bishop in the Lower Rhine area—encompassing the Dutch territories of Guelders and Limburg, as well as the German territory of Westphalia—who was included in the circle of Menno Simons (1496-1561) and Dirk Philips (1504-1568) around 1542 along with four other new Anabaptist bishops.2 In the historiography of Anabaptism, Pastor is best known for his provisional break with Dirk Philips and Menno Simons in 1547 when, at a gathering of Anabaptist leaders in Goch, he took issue with a central theme in Menno’s theology— *Theo Brok is a PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam / Doopsgezind Seminary.

The author of this article offers a new look at the unfortunately well-known events of the “Munsterite kingdom”, comparing them with analogo- us events in the Ancient Church and also in contemporary Anabaptist, Roman Catholic, and Protestant (Lutheran, Zwinglian) history. A comparative analysis shows that the situation in Munster applied to the radical wing of the Anabaptists only was, at the same time, not that far beyond the boundaries of religious practi- ce common in Europe at the time. The moderate Anabaptist wing condemned the events at Munster, and future development of the movement, especially among the Mennonites, moved in the direction of absolute pacifism. Introduction: The Events at Munster, 1534 – 1535 At the beginning of 1534, the tolerant German town of Munster in Westphalia embarked on an unusual type of Reformation. Radical Anabaptists and Evange- licals (Lutherans) united against the Catholic Bishop Francis Waldeck, and for- ced him to leave the city. The latter immediately called in troops and began a siege, but was not able to stop all traffic in and out of the city for a long time. Jan Matthijs, the leader of Munster’s Anabaptists, influenced by Melchior Hoffman’s eschatological views, announced on February 25, 1534 that all adult citizens who refused to be baptized “by faith” would be killed as “godless” and “wicked.” 193 KAIROS - Evangelical Journal of Theology / Vol.

What started as an offshoot of Huldrych Zwingli’s reform movement in Zurich quickly turned into a movement associated with fanaticism and political insurrection. Though Anabaptism did not remain a dominant force, the threat it posed for a short time forced reformers to defend their faith and establish clear theological practices. This paper focuses on two men, one of whom can be theologically linked to Anabaptism. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the reasons each reformer had for rejecting ties to Anabaptism, and to show that this theological movement was politically motivated.
